Texas Congressman Al Green (D) says he wouldn’t mind Rep. Peter King (R-NY) repeatedly calling hearings on “radical Islam” if he would also conduct a “hearing on the radicalization of Christians.”
During a Wednesday House Homeland Security Committee hearing on “The Radicalization of Muslim-Americans,” Green wondered why the chairman had only focused on one religion.
“If you agree that radicalization exists within all religions to some extent, would you kindly extend a hand into the air,” Green, who is the grandson of a Christian minister, asked the witnesses testifying before the committee. He noted that “all the hands are raised.”
“I don’t think that most people oppose hearings on radicalization,” the congressman explained. “I do not, not — N-O-T — oppose hearings on radicalization. I do oppose hearings that don’t focus on the entirety of radicalization. And if you agree that we have Christians, as has been mentioned by more than one member, Christians who become radicalized, they become part of Islam and they become radicalized as is being said, why not have a hearing on the radicalization of Christians?”
He added: “I do think that it is a problem of perception. People who see the hearings and never hear about the hearing on the radicalization of Christianity have to ask themselves, ‘Why is this missing?’ Why don’t we go to the next step and ask, how is that a blue-eyed, blonde-haired, white female in the United States of America can become radicalized to the point of wanting to do harm to this country? We don’t have that type of hearing. That’s the problem.”
Okay well THAT has now become my favorite question of the day.
Anybody want to chime in?
BTW for any of you who don't think there are ANY radicalized Christians, I present exhibit A:
Two burglaries and two fires at Atlanta-area women's clinics and a burglary at the the main office of the Georgia Obstetrical and Gynecological Society are being investigated by the FBI as possible acts of domestic terrorism or civil rights violations.
Four of the five offices targeted are run by doctors who had voiced concerns — sometimes publicly, sometimes privately — about the so-called fetal pain bill, which shortened to 20 weeks the time frame during which women can have an elective abortion.
Somehow I doubt that THESE dangerous terrorists were radicalized in a Hindu temple or Jewish Synagogue.
Oh, but see, if someone burns an abortion clinic, or murders a doctor, they are just being good Christian Republicans. Or, by the way, emails anything unGodly about the President or his family: good GOP Christians. And why the heck is CONGRESS wasting its time on the 'radicalization' of anything anyway? How about the radicalizaton of Congressional Republicans? Now THERE'S a hearing I'd watch.
ReplyDeleteI nominate Anon 4:11 AM for Comment Of The Day!
Delete"How about the radicalizaton of Congressional Republicans? Now THERE'S a hearing I'd watch."
AMEN, dammit!
I second that!
DeleteWell stated!
I applaud Congressman Green for pointing this out.
ReplyDeleteWhile I would have no tolerance for radical Muslims gaining a foothold in our government/economy, I think radical Christians are a greater threat… at this moment.
I also think it’s more Republican desperation to find a boogeyman, since they’re not very successful at that anymore. After all, the young folks grew up with violent video games and vampire books.
Fanaticism for ANY reason is dangerous!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDuring a Wednesday House Homeland Security Committee hearing on “The Radicalization of Muslim-Americans,”
ReplyDeleteWhen will there be a Homeland Security Committee regarding Todd Palin supplying an Alaska prostitute to a Secret Service agent?
YES! Excellent. Go Green!
ReplyDeleteIt is about damn time someone in a 'position of authority' brought that up. It would be great if it could become widespread. But it would just result in one more whine that Christians are persecuted in this country because someone wants to stop them from persecuting others.
ReplyDeleteSPeaking of radicalization, the Pbots over on C4Palin have started the most serious food fight I've seen in quite a while.
ReplyDeleteNot since Granny Grifter quit on them last Oct 5 has such nasty rhetoric appeared on their precious site.
One Pbot named "refudiateObama" actually nails the whole Paylin movement in a moment of sudden and relentless truth, where he says:
"This incessant bickering just adds to the meme that Palin supporters are a bunch of worshipers or sycophants"
PERFECT! We could not have said it better Mr Refudiate!
Other madness over at the PeePond indicate that Bristol's new show will surely help $arah win the nomination, and another genius named Torquemada opined:
" Perhaps she'd agree to flash one of her magnificently sculpted ankles at one or two Romney events"
HOW IN DOG's name does a bombed reality show about a whiny tearful kid like Bristol help her mother usurp the GOP nomination?
Or do you Pbots think that with a tight skirt, all the 80 year old GOP delegates will swoon with admiration, and declare $arah the Queen of the Universe?
I'm of the mind that there is more than one serious saboteur over at the pee pond. I personally know someone who is embedded as a Palin supporter-commentator who is a virulent "hater" of Palin. It is hysterical how this person makes the most insane remarks about his/her worship of Sarah. Some of the comments are so delusional and comical I almost wee myself when the bots hail them. It is trolldom extraordinaire . . .
DeleteOf course it doesn't take much to make those poor fools bite at their own legs.
I think that this committee is coming close to a serious violation of the separation of church and state. I suspect that the Republican majority on the committee considers any American Muslim to be radical.
ReplyDeletePeter King is one radicalized member of congress himself. He is scary.
ReplyDeleteIt's about time someone pointed out Christian terrorists.
Maybe because it is Friday that I am being rather slow today, but I finally recognized it was a Democrat who brought it up. Of course, no Republican would bring it up because then it would hinder their desires to split the population using the fear of Muslims. A lot of them STILL aren't convinced Obama is Christian, after all.
ReplyDeleteIts about time someone said it. Most of the domestic terrorists we have in this country predicate their lunacy on their skewered belief in what they "feel" a christian god would want them to do. Of course, they are just hateful and crazy.
ReplyDeleteAs I ponder this, I'm afraid that we have institutionalized this hatred/fear and made it too profitable to eradicate entirely without dismantling DHS, which I cannot imagine happening soon--- to be honest, probably never dismantling the agency, which IMO is a damn shame.
ReplyDeleteSince, 9/11, DHS and its increasing bureaucracy has been very generous with funds to set up "community" programs to "guard the homeland" with grants to counties, states, police forces, municipalities for these sometimes specious training materials which are racist and not entirely factual, but which feed into these areas above. It's looked at as "free money" in many cases, and like anything else, greed and a certain agenda with their own ideology has captured a segment of the "market".
Some of the racist materials have even been rooted out in FBI training materials conducted by contractors under DHS. I don't have time to search for links at the moment, but I know I've read at least a dozen articles on the subject in the past year. Probable sources are Mother Jones, Raw Story, Jeremy Scahill's work, PoliticusUSA, Salon, Slate. I'll check back later if no one has had time to post some good links.
But it's a grifting operation that Sarah would be proud of, although I hate to give her more ideas to grift off of. I'll check back here later to see if anyone was able to pick up the ball and run with it by posting some good links with more detail.
Thanks.
I'll bet that there are FAR more examples of extremist Christians who pose a threat to law and order in this country than there are radical Muslims. The reason King won't investigate them is because the extremist radicalized Christians constitute a large segment of his party's base.
ReplyDeleteBravo! This is an important and needed issue that needs to be addressed again and again.
ReplyDelete"Christian" Terrorism and Hate exists in this country--all in the name of God and/or Jesus. Evangelical Faux "christians" are at the forefront, followed by the "If you're not one of us, you are a sinner and we will punish you in god's name" from the radical incendiary crowd.
They sit in judgement of others who are not like them. They are Homophobes, Racists, Terrorists and just plain stupid. They love and thrive on HATE.
Self-righteous, bible thumping, intolerant, ignorant "christians" have no understanding of, and no use for, the teachings of the bible. They isolate, pick and choose parts of the bible in order to justify their all-consuming hatefulness.
Thanks Eve for picking damned apple in the Garden of Eden!
Radical Christians are every bit as dangerous as radical Muslims but demonizing Muslims is part of the GOP agenda.
ReplyDeleteRep. Peter King should resign from the House Homeland Security Committee because of his shady past support of the terrorist group the Irish Republican Army.
ReplyDeleteHere, here! Thank you Congressman Al Green!
ReplyDeleteThanks Al Green!
ReplyDeleteIt's about damn time this subject be brought to the forefront, and dealt with in as virulent a fashion as the extremist anti Muslim so called "christians".
OT The verdict is in on the Sandusky child molestation case, guilty as charged in 45 of the 48 charges, faces up to 60 years in prison for his crimes. The investigation will continue, there's speculation on further charges coming, one of which is his own adopted son.
