Despite what the Republicans want you to believe, meeting requests for additional security in Libya would NOT have saved Ambassador Steven's life.

Darrell Issa, the 2012 version of Cotton Mather.
Courtesy of The New York Times:

In the weeks leading up to the attack last month on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, diplomats on the ground sounded increasingly urgent alarms. In a stream of diplomatic cables, embassy security officers warned their superiors at the State Department of a worsening threat from Islamic extremists, and requested that the teams of military personnel and State Department security guards who were already on duty be kept in service.

The requests were denied, but they were largely focused on extending the tours of security guards at the American Embassy in Tripoli — not at the diplomatic compound in Benghazi, 400 miles away. And State Department officials testified this week during a hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that extending the tour of additional guards — a 16-member military security team — through mid-September would not have changed the bloody outcome because they were based in Tripoli, not Benghazi.

So there you have it. The case that the Republicans are making, which has compelled them to launch a Congressional with hunt, that if requests for additional security had been met, then Ambassador Stephens would still be alive, is simply bullshit.

The Republicans are using this incident in an attempt to make President Obama appear weak on defense.  (I guess being the Commander in Chief when Osama Bin Laden was brought to justice is not enough for these idiots.)  But what it demonstrates instead is that the Republicans are disgusting opportunists willing to use the death of an American ambassador for political gain.

I find is unbelievable that the American people cannot see through these transparent smear tactics.

  2. He's California's $arah Palin. Corrupt, ambitious, narrow minded, venal, dishonest scammers, the pair of them.

It was CA's political landscape that drove me to OR but I've returned. To my dismay, the only rethug who appears to be gone is Ah-nuld. Issa, Lungren, Herger and Mrs Bono among others still wasting good oxygen fighting against the interests of the working class.

I am sick at heart to think the cypher Romney has even a sliver of a chance...that The American People are the laughingstock of the grown-up world...that Americans are emotionally stunted, hypocritically religious and not even close to what a Christian is... and gullible and arrogantly and willfully ignorant...that they have Sarah Palin as a role model to justify their unevolved llives... that so many deny the fact of evolultion...that the majority (we are told) think Obama is a an unamerican Muslim, a Socialist AND a Communist...that mainstream journalists pander to these GOP evilness...that the GOP candidates don't -- ever -- call out the lying, the racism & misogeny of all their political surrogates...

I am sick at heart that American cannot see what they are doing: willing to return the same inequality, war-mongering, financial deregulations of the Bush years...that then cannot remember how many young Americans were sent to die in Iraq and are now committing suicide in the THOUSANDS because they probably have seen America for what it is. See above.

The Republicans will do anything, say anything, bribe anyone and if all else fails arrange for the assassination of another President if they don't get their way.

The winding down of an Empire is an ugly time, the hysterics you see pre-election are nothing to what will happen if Obama is returned to office. The old, white voters realize their time is numbered and cannot accept progress or progressive, evolved, inclusive equality of any kind. But the arc of history does come down on the side of justice. We can help.

Has anyone else noticed that there has not been even one "RED TERRIST" alert since Obama has been in office???

Remember how the Cheney/Bush regime had one every few weeks and even warned that if "THE VILLAGE IDIOT" didn't get "RE-SELECTED" we were all going to die?

Well keep that in mind when you go to vote and don't let the bastards steal back the White House and the power that goes with it.

Remember, if you let the GOOD OLD PRICKS take this election, it will probably be the last one we will ever have!

Issa bought his congressional seat, and is one of the richest members of congress. Arson, grand theft, and insurance fraud are a part of his resume, and they will always shadow his every move.

Issa is a lying asshole who is lucky to have not been put in prison for his crimes committed previously. If karma exists, I wouldn't want to stand very close to this psychopath and end up as collateral damage when he receives his due.

I have no question the Republicans are taking advantage of this for political reasons, but their timing of doing this so quickly after the incident is a disgrace to those who died, and in particularly to their families. Romney got out immediately and used it for political reasons, even before the bodies were received by the families. And now they're planning on doing an investigation which I agree is nothing more than witch hunt, but should also be telling people if they're planning to do an investigation they are in essence saying they don't have all the answers and really shouldn't be making any comments to begin with.

I can honestly say in all of my 62 years I've never seen so much lying, political maneuvering, and just plain dishonesty as I've seen from the Republicans in the past 4 years. It almost seems as if Palin may have actually influenced the Republicans in how to act. McConnell is one I particularly despise, and who seems to be solely acting on his racist beliefs since Obama was elected. I don't understand why some of the more moderate Republicans are not standing up and speaking out about this behavior. Am I missing something here, because I have not heard one Republican stand up and speak out about this new found behavior? At least they effectively kicked Palin aside along with her obvious ignorance and lies by not inviting her to the convention, showing everyone they no longer recognize her as being a voice or a representative of the Republican Party.

Whether sedition or treason, I will never vote for a Republican for any office however small and I'm perfectly willing to tell them so. To a person, Republicans are thin-skinned, mean and so uncaring and so "un-American" that I simply cannot stand to be around them any more. I did not always feel this way but since Bill Clinton was elected, their behavior has become increasingly beyond anything that is even remotely acceptable.

  9. Have you heard that Stevens was allegedly raped before he was murdered? If it wasn't so horrifying and deeply saddening, I'd probably wonder if the republicans would say anything about Stevens saying yes with his eyes or something.
Sometimes bad shit happens, and it's easy to play authority in life when you have 20/20 hindsight. Playing politics with a man's life-- a hero's life (a diplomat that stays in the line of duty even when he feels his life and safety are at high risk is a hero in my book)-- is shameful. Even more so when a party has to tweak the facts to properly politicize it.

Their readership is a mirror of the WND/Breitbart crowd of low-intellect non-thinkers, many of whom are BIRTHERS who also believe that WMD's were found in Iraq, that Saddam was behind the 9/11 attacks, and that we (the U.S.) need to "nuke them goddam AYRabs back to the days of MO HAMMad".

      Marz,

I've seen and heard that story on many sites and threads across the internet and heard it from my "fair and balanced" infected relatives, so it must have been on Fox News as well, because they don't know of any other news source.
Your post is thoughtful, and respectful of the heroes these people were, especially Mr Stevens.
The people in the streets holding signs that he was a friend to the lybian people spoke volumes of this man's character and how well he did his job.

Isisa is lower than a mite on the stomach of a flea on the belly of a weasel. He even exposed classified information that may make things worse, without knowing all the facts.

The radical right is blowing this out of proportion, Mitt knew it and that's why he jumped ahead of the President to hold a news conference, say anything for political gain. Even the chance encounter with one of the navy seals was embellished and exploited.

Same lying bastards--different campaign.
