I'm sorry, what got unsealed today? |
The controversy over Romney’s alleged lies under oath continues this Thursday, as a Massachusetts court unseals a testimony that some speculate could be devastating for the presidential candidate.
The famed feminist lawyer Gloria Allred has said that Mitt Romney lied in the divorce proceedings between her client, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg, and her husband, Tom, in order to protect the financial wealth of the former CEO of Staples. If the allegations are true, the revelation could be yet another blow to the GOP during an election cycle in which many of the candidates have played old-boy’s-club politics and demonstrated disregard and sometimes outright scorn for women.
The case in question began more than 20 years ago, when Mitt Romney--then hedge funder at Bain Capital--testified in the divorce proceedings on behalf of Staples-CEO Tom Stemberg, at the time Romney’s close friend and business partner. The divorce hearings occurred shortly before Staples--which has become the GOP’s misleading poster child for Bain Capital’s financial track record--went public, earning Stemberg and Bain Capital millions.
In the testimony, however, Romney allegedly lied about the future of the company, saying it was “overvalued” and that Stemberg was a “dreamer” for thinking the company could grow large. As a result, Maureen received very little in the divorce settlement--only to learn that her husband and his cohort Mitt Romney quickly turned around and cashed in their own stocks in Staples for a small fortune right after the divorce was finalized.
Of course we are left to speculate as to just how damaging this testimony might be to Mitt Romney and his campaign, but as you do perhaps you ought to consider this tidbit as well:
Parties in the case also signed a confidentiality agreement that Gloria Allred, the attorney for Sullivan Stemberg, called “the most comprehensive gag order I have ever seen in my 36 years of practicing law.”
Now that might simply be hyperbole on Allred's part, but if not then one has to wonder just WHAT exactly is so damaging in these documents that Romney's attorneys felt the need to constrain Maureen Sullivan Stemberg so aggressively.
And if this is as it is described, a case of Mitt Romney working with a male counterpart to defraud his wife through the use of deception, one has to wonder exactly how this will play out with female voters who are already quite suspicious of the Republican challenger.
In my estimation it will not only cause significant distress among the women, but it will further go on to raise issues of trust with ALL of the potential voters who have not yet had the opportunity to cast their ballot.
After all if the man is willing to lie under oath, in a court of law.......
We need contemporaneous documents showing Romney was telling Bain clients or Romney cronies a different story.
ReplyDeleteBut American voters don't digest complex financial details easily. With so little time until election day, it seems likely this court decision will not impact the vote.
It doesn't need to be complex.
DeleteWillard lied so his friend could cheat his wife in their divorce. Shortly thereafter, he and friend made a fortune in direct contrast to the lie he told under oath.
While probably not something that would get him convicted in any court, it is just another example Willard's character....or lack that off.
DeleteAnn might unseal you Mitt for eternity if you lose this thing.
ReplyDeleteThat's a reference for those who don't know of just one of the many weird Mormon rituals..Being sealed for eternity to your spouse.
Gadfree, who would want to be sealed into eternity to Mittens? The guy is such a fraud and liar! The Mormon grouping is weird...doesn't sound 'christian' to me.
DeleteArrogANNt. She's a cult member and a sick one. The story about how obsessed she was with him in chigh school and college, pretty much erasing her self and her desires and even turning on her father with the post death Mormon conversion. There is no there left there, except her status greed and her ambition. NO wonder in unguarded times she looks as if she hates him. Underneath, she hates herself. He is nothing more than a tool for her ambition. So I guess you are right. Broken tools have little value, except as scrap.
DeleteIf Romney did lie under oath (which wouldn't surprise me one bit!) what can be done to him for it twenty years later? This guys is such a creep. Why anyone would vote for him defies me!
ReplyDeleteOBAMA/BIDEN 2012
There is a slight problem for Republicans on this. Recall that they wanted to impeach Clinton for lying under oath about his BJ! Yep, the party that wanted to impeach the President for lying under oath, can't really ignore it if Romney did it.
DeleteWith all the things that right wing voters are able to overlook about Rmoney, why the hell will this make a lick of difference? At this point they could show a video of Romney and Ryan sacrificing newborns on an altar of flames while dancing around naked being whipped by Ann on her horse and not a single Republican would bat an eye or switch their vote.
ReplyDelete"not a single Republican would bat an eye or switch their vote."
DeleteNot as long as Romney remains white.
You are correct. I forgot that part.
DeleteI think the release of this document will have an impact. It amplifies what a lying asshole the guy is! He and Ryan are not worthy of the White House and are going to lose!!! Trust me!
DeleteOBAMA/BIDEN 2012
I feel so dirty for laughing at this, lol
DeleteIt's dirty because I shudder to think of what Ann's wearing in this dominatrix imagining....
Is lying under oath a felony? This would disqualify Myth from the office of president.
Deletemy exact thoughts, Olivia and Anon. I've been saying for weeks he could announce himself as a pedophile and we would still hear from polls that they are neck and neck.
DeleteI used to think there were a few intelligent, sensitive normal people in the Repug party but their pathetic primary slate and subsequent selection of Willard changed my mind. I do know a couple people who defected after the 2008 ticket and came over to the Dems but I'm constantly amazed by the numbers still willing to support the nonsense of R/R. They will do anything to steal this election as the picking of the next few Supremes depends on it.
I dunno, least in my local paper - and who knows how truthful that is- many are professing the are Republicans but will now at least split their ticket after Mourdork's comments.

Levi Johnston Is Getting Hitched To His New Baby Mama This Weekend!

Damn... bad weekend for the Palins.
DeleteBristol gets her ass kicked off of DWTS and loses Levi to beautiful Sunny.
Hey Sarah will you give Levi and Sunny that big Alaska wedding you never gave Track or Bristol? He is family, the daddy of your grandchild.
I sincerely wish you guys every happiness, Levi. You truly deserve it!
DeleteCongratulations, Levi and Sunny! May you always be happy, and may your enemies always know it!
DeleteHere's to New Beginnings!
In unrelated, totally trivial thoughts-
Wonder if Beefy's consuming mass quantities of Hostess Ho Ho's while listening to Adele's "Someone like You" with her face contorted like when Willow left her alone?
Ouch!!
Mitt wishes he could hie to Kolob right now.
ReplyDeleteIn the twinkling of an eye.
DeleteMitt Romney Transcripts RELEASED
ReplyDeletehttp://tmz.vo.llnwd.net/o28/newsdesk/tmz_documents/1025_romney_2.pdf
Allred has her detractors… my husband dislikes her. She’s an ambulance chaser, if the case will give her at least a million (per her daughter). But she does get stuff done.
ReplyDeleteWho cares what your husband thinks; I am sure he is a very nice guy, but so what. Rmoney and troops are mysogynists that need to be taken to task by anyone that has the balls to do it. If that person is Allred, good for her.
DeleteIt won't make a difference to most of the idiots voting for Mitt---BUT, you have to wonder at the republican women who have been cheated out of settlements by their husbands during a divorce. Let's just say that Mitt might have pissed off another segment of women in his own party. Win, win.
ReplyDeleteO/T, but any bets on which minor child Sarah Palin will claim is scarred for life by Jon Stewart?
ReplyDeleteLMAO!!
DeleteThe only person who has scarred her children is PIMP DADDY TOAD.
DeleteWhat it might do is make (or reinforce) yet another Republican decision that she (or he) is just not going to vote at all. They don't want Obama but can't bring themselves to vote for Mitt. That would be good enough.
ReplyDeleteMy mother has been a life long Republican voter.. a member of the DAR and considers herself very patriotic.. she is not voting in this election because she can't vote for Romney.. I am so proud of her!!
DeleteThis is going to be a big shock, but when rich men are in the process of divorcing, they seek to hide their assets to avoid paying their wife (and children) money. It might be the case for rich women trying to hide their assets, but it is usually rich guys.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be another shock. Mitt Romney probably lied under oath, and I bet that he lied under oath on other occasions as well. There was a time when Mitt lived in Utah, working on the Olympics and he had plans to run for office in Utah. He paid his residence taxes as a resident of Utah, as opposed to the higher taxes that some one would pay for their second home in Utah (out of state real estate taxes were higher).
Then Mitt discovered that there were no openings in the political slate for him in Utah, so he chose to run in Massachusetts. That meant claiming that his filing for residence in Utah had to be undone because he needed to have a 7 year residence in Massachusetts. It was the clerk's mistake. Yes, Mitt lied when he claimed to have been a Utah resident.
With his money in tax free off shore accounts, Mitt lies when he files his income tax returns. He reports a lower income than he actually receives. So, Mitt lied, again. I'm shocked.
And in Illinois, Joe Walsh implicitly blackmailed his ex-wife in a settlement deal (also sealed) just so his 25 y o child can publicly whine that his opponent, the military hero, Tammy Duckworth, is being mean when she calls Joe a deadbeat dad.
DeleteFacts of the case reported in reliable local papers: Bully Joe owed over $100,000 in child support as of April - the youngest kid is 18 so it had to be going on for a while. Joe loaned his campaign 35K while he was crying poor to his wife.
Here's the blackmail if he loses, he is unemployed and can't pay - it is probably in the April settlement.
OT Sarah Palin has not called out Ann Coulter for using the "R" word. So, it's OK if the dreaded "R" word refers to President Obama or someone else that you don't like?
ReplyDeleteListen, Sarah! If you are going to be the Word Police, you will have to write everyone a ticket who uses a word incorrectly. Otherwise, stop that shucking and jiving, and go back to your igloo and eat an Eskimo pie.
hahahahaha caw Caw CAW!
Delete$he's one jive turkey, you betcha.

Mitt needs to grow a mustache and twirl it. Snidely indeed.

O/T "Federal court won't revisit ruling allowing Texas to defund Planned Parenthood
ReplyDeleteAUSTIN — A federal appeals court has refused to reconsider its ruling that Texas can withhold state women's health care funding from Planned Parenthood clinics.
The New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of appeals issued its ruling Thursday.
State lawmakers cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, the largest health care provider in the Texas Women's Health Program.
The health program provides family planning and other health services to more than 130,000 low-income women and is designed for those who might not otherwise qualify for Medicaid.
Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Kyle Janek says the state has increased the number of doctors and clinics in the program to care for women who need to find new health care providers.
Gov. Rick Perry released a statement praising the court's decision. "Today's ruling affirms yet again that in Texas the Women's Health Program has no obligation to fund Planned Parenthood and other organizations that perform or promote abortion," he said. "In Texas we choose life, and we will immediately begin defunding all abortion affiliates to honor and uphold that choice.""
God help us women should the Republicans win- it'll be like the world described in "The Handmaid's Tale"c\ when it comes to womens' lives!
130,000 women (or more) that are going to vote for Obama.
DeleteNice going, Rick. You think these women (and their children) are going to forget what the Republican party did to them?
And in Oklahoma, they defunded WIC programs run by PP, even though it was the largest best run WIC program. this is hurting thousands of women and kids ages 0-5.
DeleteIf Mittens was compelled to lie in court I can only hope he got a few lessons from Bristol Palin. No one has said boo about her whoppers.
ReplyDeleteThe Republicans aren't just attacking women in general, they're now systematically pissing off smaller demographics of women.
ReplyDeleteThey've lost the vote of any woman that has been raped.
Now they're going to ensure they never get the vote of any woman that has been divorced.
I think our President had it right when he said the 80s is calling for it's foreign policy back. Mitt and his minions are so lost in the past it is going from frightening to really entertaining. And they can't seem to decide. They want the 50s June Cleaver in the kitchen but the 60s foreign policy with the 80s military capability. With a 19th century union-less workforce.
Or something.
So THAT'S why Queen Esther is the leader of the Tea Party. I'll dress like a whore and promote my herpes until the the moose come home because THE CONSTITUTION says I can. AND the Old Testament.
ReplyDeleteSarah Palin: The Bathsheba waiting for her David.
It is foolish to think that this scumbag didn't lie thru his ass all during this divorce case, of course he did. That is how his IRA is worth 100 million...same thing, he lied thru his ass about the worth of stock. Is there any doubt that Robme lies as easily as breathing? I think back to my dad, our family owned a marina and how I grew up hearing about honesty...it is everything, and my dad had clients for 30+ years and now that he is gone, my brothers serve the same clients. I just can't imagine how the wives and grandchildren feel about grandpa Mitt, they didn't grow up under his rule, the sons have learned since birth about honesty. I believe it was a choice for all their wives...live in luxury is the tradeoff for being a stepford wife.
ReplyDeleteBut did you see the two DIL at the debate? They looked awful. Baggy shapless dresses and stringy unkempt hair. Mitt's boys must keep a very tight reign on their allowances.
DeleteI hope it sticks, and the people who are undecided realize this is the real Mitt Romney. How any woman in her right mind can support Romney/Ryan is beyond me. I hope this makes them think twice, they may not vote FOR Obama, but then they don't value the right to vote if they're willing to vote for liars.
ReplyDeletePresident Obama and Joe Biden "get" women's issues, their values line up squarely on the right side of history, they're willing to go to bat for all people, especially the middle class.
Romney's avoiding doing interviews, he's running away from the media and making stuff up as he goes along. "Hedge Fund Manager" sounds so tame and harmless, he's a vulture capitalist.
Well, the gag order might have been extremely "comprehensive" but not as comprehensive as the one he put on the State of Massachusetts - wiping the computers clean of everything. Something you are not supposed to do; records are supposed to be kept of what one writes and how decisions have been made. Mitt Romney should never hold political office again in this country.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
All of the GOP members of the current House of Representatives lied when they swore to uphold the Constitution. Their loyalty is not to the country but to the GOP and Grover Norquist. Let's oust them all this November. Let them start to look for jobs.
