It seemed like a minor adjustment. To comply with the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruling that legalized gay marriage in 2003, the state Registry of Vital Records and Statistics said it needed to revise its birth certificate forms for babies born to same-sex couples. The box for “father” would be relabeled “father or second parent,’’ reflecting the new law.
But to then-Governor Mitt Romney, who opposed child-rearing by gay couples, the proposal symbolized unacceptable changes in traditional family structures.
He rejected the Registry of Vital Records plan and insisted that his top legal staff individually review the circumstances of every birth to same-sex parents. Only after winning approval from Romney’s lawyers could hospital officials and town clerks across the state be permitted to cross out by hand the word “father’’ on individual birth certificates, and then write in “second parent,’’ in ink.
Romney’s interventions mostly resulted in delays awarding birth certificates for women married to same-sex partners who gave birth. Gay men seeking parental rights were required to take a different route, by obtaining a court order. By law, birth certificates must be issued within 10 days of birth, and in some instances, those deadlines were not met.
Okay let's go ahead and add gays to the list of people who should NEVER even consider voting for this man, along with women, African Americans, the Middle Class, young voters, old voters, American car enthusiasts, and members of his own church who should be ashamed to have this man representing them in the White House.

Randall, I don't mean to hijack your post, I just wanted my question to be at the top for more people to see and hopefully answer for me. I have a couple who were shipmates with my husband and are very close friends of the family, they're hoping that gay marriage gets passed in Washington so that they can marry in January. They don't want (or plan to possibly want) children, so it's just never come up--- what DO gay couples put on the birth certificate?
DeleteWould it be two slots for mother or father (depending on gender, of course)? Because with the couple I'm friends with, they don't see one of them as the woman and the other as the man. They both identify as males. So would that just be two fathers instead of mother/father on the certificate?
Just that based on the article, it sounded as though the mother slot was already filled (and writers don't often make distinctions between lesbian/transsexual/gay couples, they are all just "gay.")
Marz, I know a gay male couple in new york who had a surrogate carry their child and they're both listed as "father" on the birth certificate. So there must have been some president in case law. I think it may depend on the state.

Obama leads by 5 in Wisconsin and Iowa
ReplyDeleteNew Public Policy Polling surveys in Wisconsin and Iowa, conducted on behalf of Health Care for America Now, find Barack Obama leading by 5 points in each state. In Iowa the spread is 50/45, representing a 3 point increase in Obama’s advantage compared to a week ago. In Wisconsin he’s at 51% to Mitt Romney’s 46%, almost identical to 51/45 on the previous poll.
Key findings from the surveys include:
-Obama has a 7 point lead with independent voters in each state, 47/40 in Iowa and 50/43 in Wisconsin.
-A majority of voters in each state has a favorable opinion of Obama, 50/46 in Iowa and 52/46 in Wisconsin. Meanwhile Romney draws negative reviews in each at 46/51 in Iowa and 47/49 in Wisconsin.
-Obama has a wide advantage over Romney on two key issues in each state. Voters trust him more than Romney to stand up for the middle class by a 52/45 margin in Iowa and a 52/46 one in Wisconsin. And they trust him more to protect Medicare as well, 50/43 in Iowa and 52/44 in Wisconsin.
-Obama’s already built up a wide lead among early voters in Iowa that may be hard for Romney to overcome. He’s up 64/35 with those who say they’ve already voted.

Obama leads 51-47 in Ohio
ReplyDeletePPP's newest Ohio poll finds Barack Obama leading Mitt Romney 51-47, up from a 49-48 margin a week ago.
It's starting to look like Obama might have turned the corner with his wins in the second and third debates. When asked who they think won the debates as a whole Obama wins out 45/43, suggesting he really fixed his problems from the first debate with the second two. Obama's approval is on positive ground at 51/48, while Romney's favorability is in negative territory at 47/51. Ohioans trust Obama over Romney on both the economy (52/46) and foreign policy (54/44).
Obama's built up a big lead among early voters in the state. 36% say they've already cast their ballots and they report having voted for Obama by a 63/36 margin. Romney's up 53/45 with those yet to vote.
The main shift from a week ago is Democrats further unifying around Obama as the election nears. Last week he led 86/14 with them in the state and now he's pushed that up further to 88/10. Romney continues to lead with independents, 50/46, but that's down a tick from 49/42 last week.
Obama's lead in Ohio comes thanks to big advantages among women (55/43), African Americans (86/12), and young voters (60/36). Romney's winning with men (52/46), whites (52/46), and seniors (54/45) but he would need to win those groups, particularly whites and men, by considerably wider margins if he was going to take the state.
The Senate race really appears to be getting away from Josh Mandel in the closing stages. Sherrod Brown's opened up a 53/42 lead. Brown's winning independents 48/44 even as Obama loses them, and he has 89% of Democrats lined up behind him while only 81% of Republicans are committed to Mandel. Brown's approval is on slightly positive ground at 47/44, while Mandel continues to be very unpopular with only 38% of voters seeing him favorably to 51% with a negative opinion.
Ohio's referendum to create an independent redistricting commission continues to appear headed for defeat. 37% of voters say they'll support it to 48% who are opposed. Independents oppose it by a 47/41 margin and although Democrats support it (55/30), Republicans are even more united in their opposition to it (12/72).
Two other notes from Ohio:
-There's no enthusiasm gap in the state. 69% of Democrats say they're 'very excited' to vote and 68% of Republicans do.
-Democrats lead the generic Congressional ballot in the state 50/42.

Gallup: Majority Of Americans, 19 Percent Of Republicans, Predict Obama Re-Election
ReplyDeleteA majority of Americans, 54 percent, believe President Barack Obama will secure re-election next week, according to a poll from Gallup released on Wednesday.
The poll shows only 34 percent predict a victory for Republican nominee Mitt Romney. More than 50 percent also predicted an Obama victory in Gallup's polling in August and May.
Democrats are feeling more bullish about their candidate than Republicans. Eighty-six percent of Democrats believe Obama will be the winner on Tuesday, compared with 71 percent of Republicans who envision a Romney win.
But while a mere 8 percent of Democrats pick Romney as the likely winner, 19 percent of Republicans believe it will be Obama who emerges with more than 270 electoral votes.

The Making Of Romney's Storm Relief Event

The last-minute decision by Romney high command Monday to suspend politics while Sandy raged sent aides in Ohio scrambling to convert a scheduled victory rally into an apolitical "storm relief event" — a process that tested the campaign's agility, and left a few threads of partisanship inadvertently hanging.
On Monday morning, Romney's local team in Dayton was eagerly preparing to host the candidate the following day. A high school gym had been reserved, a stage had been rented, and a pair of celebrity guests — country singer Randy Owen, and NASCAR driver Richard Petty — had been booked to give the event some B-list heft.
Then, a little before noon, communications director Gail Gitcho announced the cancellation of "all events currently scheduled" for Tuesday. The superstorm that forecasters had been warning about for days had picked up steam, and people throughout the northeast were now bracing for the worst. In a statement, Gitcho said the decision to cancel campaign events had been made "out of sensitivity to the millions of Americans in the path of Hurricane Sandy."
But Boston wasn't quite ready to lose a full day of swing state visibility with a week left in the race. So, after some deliberation, the campaign decided to use their existing venue in Ohio to stage a makeshift, and nonpartisan, humanitarian project. It would be a way for Romney to show leadership — and get on the local news — without looking craven or opportunistic.
The cryptic advisory went out to press several hours later, announcing the time and location of a "storm relief event" on Tuesday. As Sandy made landfall in New Jersey, Romney's campaign jet carried the candidate, along with his staff and traveling press corps, back to Ohio after an afternoon rally in Davenport, Iowa.
Meanwhile, on the ground in Dayton, aides were working feverishly to de-politicize the planned event. Campaign signs were removed from the premises, long rows of folding tables were set up, and logistics were painstakingly arranged to accomodate physical donations.
"It took the production company and event staff on site some time to ensure that it was converted into a space which was suitable for the needs of a relief effort," said one staffer who was there.
The plan was for supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies to the event, and then deliver the bags of canned goods, packages of diapers, and cases of water bottles to the candidate, who would be perched behind a table along with a slew of volunteers and his Ohio right-hand man, Senator Rob Portman. To complete the project and photo-op, Romney would lead his crew in carrying the goods out of the gymnasium and into the Penske rental truck parked outside.
But the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer. (The campaign confirmed that it "did donate supplies to the relief effort," but would not specify how much it spent.)
At more senior levels of the campaign, careful consideration was being given to the tone of the program, officials said. Romney would scrap his normal stump speech and replace it with brief, optimistic remarks on the spirit of volunteerism. And Owen would still perform with his band, but he would refrain from cheerleading his candidate, and instead talk about the devastation he saw in Alabama after tornadoes tore through his home state last year.

DeleteRomney is such a jerk. The canned goods would best serve a local food pantry. As someone commented elsewhere, New Jersey needs a lot of help, food is not high on the list. This is the equivalent of Sarah Palin bringing cookies to the Arctic villagers a few years ago when her policies and refusal to take action as governor caused them such grief during a cold winter with very high fuel costs that followed a poor fishing season. Romney and Palin - two totally classless acts.

I was so inspired by Republican Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney's story about how he helped clean a football field 10 yard width area. So after Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey I went over to where the New York Giants play to volunteer my help to clean up their football field and they just laughed at me.

In this new ad, the Obama campaign takes on the task of attempting to see if they can list all of the taxes and fees Mitt Romney increased on small businesses and the middle class.

Abortion Poll: Vast Majority Support Legal Abortion For Rape Victims
ReplyDeleteThe vast majority of Americans believe abortion should be legal in cases of rape or incest and when the life or health of the mother is at risk, according to a new HuffPost/YouGov poll. That finding puts most Americans at odds with the 13 Republican Senate candidates who have said they support making abortion illegal in all cases.
According to the survey, at least 70 percent of respondents support keeping abortion legal for all of the three scenarios. In the individual cases, 74 percent said abortion should be legal in cases where the mother's life is endangered by pregnancy, 70 percent said it should be legal when the mother's health is endangered, and 74 percent said it should be legal when a woman becomes pregnant as a result of rape or incest. No more than 14 percent of respondents said that abortion should be illegal in all cases.

Abortion should be a clear path to a pregnancy as the result of incest or rape.
DeleteI'm a person that experienced unwanted sex with my father and if I'd ever been impregnated I'd have had an abortion immediately and had to have done it behind the scenes because abortions were not legal back then. But, I would have secured one.
Oh, and by the way, the sex was detested and I've never enjoyed having it since. Plus, I still hate my dead father today!! There is no friggin' way I would have brought his child into the world!

Christie shines, Obama leads, Brownie attacks, Romney waffles
ReplyDeleteThe October surprise has arrived. Let’s give Chris Christie and Barack Obama credit. They lead. They collaborate. They act. They do what Americans want political leaders to do: work together at a time of crisis. Meanwhile, the ubiquitous and disastrous Bush appointee and Romney supporter Michael Brown, known as "Brownie,” attacks the president for his excellent leadership during the hurricane crisis. And again Mitt Romney acts in character. He pandered to the right during the primaries by calling for the privatization of FEMA. He named as his running mate Paul Ryan, who favors decimating FEMA with devastating cutbacks. Romney spent Tuesday looking like a defendant on a perp walk refusing to answer at least 11 questions about his now-secret views on disaster relief.
The president is being the president. Mitt Romney is being the panderer. Brownie, God's gift to Democrats in the closing days of the campaign, reminds voters of the difference between the way President Obama has masterfully handled the crisis and the way President George W. Bush mismanaged Katrina.

The press asked Robme the FEMA ? 14 times and he ignored them and refused to answer. Today is the 3 week anniversary of Romney refusing to speak to the press. He canceled on The View as it was high risk with 4 sharp tongued women. He refused to go on Nicholdian and he was asked in April for the segment "kids ask the president Questions". He said it wouldn't fit into his schedule tho the ONLY thing on his schedule was the Al Smith Dinner that evening. He refuses to appear on Letterman OR Fox. The man is a COWARD and he knows when he opens his mouth he only fucks thing up. This is the head of the REthug party.MY GOD how frightening is that?????????????????????

ReplyDeleteIn Hudson, the packing was proceeding too quickly, and the supporters wearing red "Team Wisconsin" t-shirts were given the order to slow down and then to stop to be sure there were still goods to be packed when Ryan entered.
One by one the boxes were filled and loaded into a waiting U-Haul, and then they stopped to wait for the candidate.
Ah, so the priority here for the Romney-Ryan campaign wasn't that the supplies get boxed up and sent off as quickly as possible ... it was that Paul Ryan get his photo taken while as the supplies got boxed up. Makes total sense, because this wasn't a "storm relief" event — it was a "Romney-Ryan campaign relief" event. And it showed.

O/T. Yesterday my daughter noticed all thee unavailable calls on her phone. She usually ignores them but decided to answer one. It was the Robme campaign. She asked 3 times how they got her # but the refused to answer. They said they noticed she always votes etc and then launched into how great a Governor Mitt was??!!She countered with he spent $100,000 to destroy his record and his unpopularity and incompetence and lying. He basically called HER a liar.The asshole would not get off the phone arguing.When she got pissed and told him what a dumbFuck he had to be to support Mitt he said "I am a college educated man".Then he asked her if she kissed her mother with a mouth like that. She said you're lucky you got me ,if you got my mom your ears would be BLEEDING.Typical republican. She told the asshat we'd voted Obama a month ago he hung up on her. Stay Classy Rethugs!

DeleteBut to the Obama campaign's credit, they're showing only positive ads touting President Obama's accomplishments and proven track record. The mainstream news is doing it's part for free showing Chris Christie and President Obama actually leading, and little or nothing about Romney.
My expectation of two men running for highest office in the wake of the storm is that they speak with knoweledge to the magnitude, life and economic impact, needs etc. Not staging phoney donations for false impressions handing out props to supporters ignoring the Red Cross guidelines.
ReplyDeleteThe doubling down smearing Chrysler and now GM is despicable. Romney is guilty of moving jobs overseas yet he lies shifting blame. I hope his pandering pretense is voted against.
What I'd LOVE is for an ad to go out with President Obama and Chris Christie coming off Marine One, and a shot of Romney "Deplaneing" with the TRUMP jet in the background.
