Okay does anybody else find this pattern rather enlightening?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Turn Florida blue despite the best efforts of Jeb and Scott, and you can point to a little progress. But yeah, it does seem the South has never gotten over losing the Civil War, doesn't it? And since they are the ones now calling again for secession...have they ever really seen themselves as Americans? Or just people? No, they see themselves as white and better than, even though the education levels in these states are lower, they are more likely to receive governmetn asssistance, more likely to be Fox braindead, and more likely to own guns. Maybe we ought to let them go?
My first question in looking at those maps was, what's wrong with Indianans?

I believe Indiana was once (and maybe still is) the national headquarters of the KKK. Southern Indiana might as well be part of the southern states.

Actually, for quite a few years the Grand Pooh-Pa (not sure what his title actually was) live about 40-50 miles south of Cleveland Ohio.

They made the bottom map prematurely. President Obama won Florida.

I've seen this map before in relation to Chik-Fil-A stores and former slave states. The south--plus ca change, plus le meme chose.

  4. And may I give a internet fistbump to my home state of Colorado for consistently providing some middle-of-the-map sanity? :P

My theory is that the state turned blue thanks to the marijuana ballot initiative that brought the Rocky Mtn high demographic out in force =D

My husband has been saying all through the election cycle that we should the US should separate into the South US and the North US. Let the south try and live without all that "BIG" government that they hate so much!!

When I lived in Texas all the locals would say to me "We could be our own country." And my answer always was "who's going to pay for all the welfare checks?' They would just start mumbling and walk away... Kind of mean I know, but I just wanted to point out they weren't as independent as they thought.

Anon@5::10 My thoughts too. Not only that, but when they need water, pay per gallon at the same price as the fuel,or let them drink the dirty water from the missisippi.
When ever anyone says they are moving south, i say NOT ME!! i'm asked why not? My answer is always, the mind set required to live down there.

I'm in TN, and I know a lot of folks who'll sleep with black people, but they vote republican. I think for some whites it wasn't Obama's race, they didn't like Clinton or Kerry or Gore either. They are irrational in their hatred of Democratic Party positions. I think they would have voted for (pre-Obama) Powell or West, or Rice. Blacks who hate Democrats and keep their place are welcome.

Simply amazing......this is an eye opening graphic. I imagine, like most of us here, have looked at the red/blue map and simply wondered how it comes to be most of the middle goes along with the south, now I see. I always thought the newer generations left those racist ideas behind, I guess I was wrong, damn this is sad. Knowing Obama won the popular vote it shows where the population is, thank goodness.

The mid section of our country is not as populated as it is on the east coast. Don't forget that Alaska is a large state but their population is very, very small.

Amazing how there has been so little change! Makes me even more thankful that we President Obama and VP Biden in the White House and I'm proud that I voted for them AGAIN!

Just saw the Speillberg movie Lincoln last night. Spouse and I usually wait until a film is out on netflix/dvd for economic and couch potato reasons.
First run, late night- geez I don't do 3 a.m. so well anymore. Anyway, illuminating look at the genesis of the 14th amendment and that map - and Lincoln the politician - reminded me very much in a good way of President Obama and how well he plays 3 dimensional chess.

Oh yea, the weird thing was (you have to keep reminding yourself about history and the Dixiecrats of the civil rights era - the Dems were the bad guys back then.

When I was in the Navy (WAY back in the late 60's!) I was based in Washington State. Even then I noticed something that ties to Gryph's displayed maps.

I met a tremendous number of people who were seriously contemplating a move for secession. The area being bandied about? (and I mean by delegates from each area!) was Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, Colorado and California north of San Francisco. See anything similar on Gryph's maps? Accident? Wanna bet?

They even had talks with BC and Alberta!

Their number one reason for wanting out? The same as BC and Alberta: a complete lack of understanding by the Eastern Capitals of the needs, desires and aspirations of the west. Sound familiar?

Oh, and BTW, for those who argue against secession from a "legal" point of view? Forget it. The word secession isn't even in the Constitution!

So... are you saying secession is legal? You sound like someone from the south.

Hmm....way northern California, Oregon, Washington...what do we see? Lots and lots and lots of people on welfare generously given out by the blue states, particularly those back east. If it wasn't for the software companies, the entire region would be a basket case.

While waiting to vote, I heard a father explaining a proposition on the ballot about getting better radios etc. for the rescue squad. His first time voter daughter said "Is that socialism? I don't want socialism."

I think that for her entire lifetime, her vote will be swayed by any rabid wing nut that can trigger her ignorance and fear with a single dog-whistle. I don't think where she ends up living will change her.

BTW, I have to give credit to the dad for trying. He answered her by saying she should vote after deciding whether she thinks the squad needs new radios.
