Possibly one of the greatest Fox News interviews EVER!

Courtesy of Mediaite:

Author Tom Ricks was brought on Happening Now to discuss how several GOP lawmakers are backing off their criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice‘s handling of the September terror attacks that left four Americans dead in Libya.

Asked why lawmakers like Sen. John McCain seem to be backing off Rice a bit lately, Ricks replied: “I think Benghazi was generally hyped by this network especially. And now that the campaign is over, I think he is backing off a little bit. They aren’t going to stop Susan Rice from being Secretary of State.”

Co-anchor Jon Scott pushed back, asking “When you have four people dead, including the first U.S. ambassador, for the first time in more than 30 years, how do you call that hype?”

“How many security contractors died in Iraq? Do you know?” Ricks shot back.

“I don’t,” replied Scott.

“Nobody does because nobody cared,” Ricks said. “We know several hundred died but there was never official count of security contractors in Iraq. When I say this focus was essentially on a small fire-fight, I think, number one, I’ve covered a lot of fire-fights and it is impossible to figure out what happens in them sometimes.”

Ricks then took another open shot at Fox News: “I think the emphasis on Benghazi has been extremely political, partly because Fox is operating as the wing of Republican Party.”

At that point, Scott cut the interview short: “Tom Ricks, thanks for joining us today.”

Ricks smirked and replied: “You’re welcome.”

Okay can I just tell you how awesome it is to see this actually happen ON Fox News?

Well you know that Tom Ricks will never been invited back for an interview, but what an amazing way to get banned.

I think I have a new hero.

What a contrast to how it goes when a rightwingnut appears on a show such as Rachel Maddow, and spews out his hatred.

She'll only cut them off if they never stop to take a breath, or refuse to answer the actual question, after several attempts to cajole him into acting somewhat sane.

  2. Anonymous5:14 PM

Mister Scott, that masterful bitch-slap you just received was for all the right reasons.

  3. Anonymous5:31 PM

His book was recommended to me:

The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today
    by: Thomas E. Ricks

  4. Anita Winecooler6:00 PM

That was a work of art! Scott looked like a deer in the headlights - would never have happened on Tameron Hall!

  5. erica from dallas6:24 PM

    That was a great moment.

  6. Anonymous6:26 PM

OMG!! I laughed out loud and clapped my hands and then watched it again---TWICE!
I think I need to buy his book now.
This...was a thing of beauty and needs to happen more.

  7. Anonymous6:28 PM

I just went and "liked" his Facebook page:

  8. Oh my Stars and Stripes, that was sweet!

  9. Anonymous6:54 PM

Oh Gryphen, this is absolutely tragic. Makes my blood boil! Hope this guy gets what he's got coming. Fucking sicko.

Lesbian Hospitalized After Severe Thanksgiving Beating By Girlfriend’s Brother and Mother

An Alabama woman is in the hospital after being severely beaten on Thanksgiving, allegedly by her girlfriend’s brother, because she is a lesbian. 23-year old Mallory Owens is recovering from the assault and subsequent reconstructive surgery at USA Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The family reportedly wants the alleged attacker, Travis Hawkins Jr., in jail and charged with a hate crime and attempted murder. Currently, news reports state Hawkins is out on bond for second-degree assault.

    Caution: Graphic image below.

“He tried to kill her. He’s lucky he didn’t kill her. She’s lucky to be alive,” WKRG reports her mother Kristi Taylor said.

“I didn’t recognize her when I got here. It’s hard to look at her like that,” she cried.

The twenty-three year old was celebrating Thanksgiving at her girlfriend’s house in Mobile Thursday night, when her mother says her girlfriend’s brother attacked her, just for being gay.

“She was invited over by the family to eat Thanksgiving. I did not want her to go, I begged her not to go, knowing how the family felt about her. But she said, ‘They’re trying to be nice.’”

Mallory’s mother says this isn’t the first time he’s attacked her. Earlier this year, family members tell News 5 that Travis Hawkins Jr. hit Mallory over the head with a pipe wrench. She was injured, but the family did not pursue charges after that incident.

This time, she was beaten so badly that she’s almost unrecognizable. She had to have facial reconstruction surgery, with metal plates put in her cheek bones. Her sister Avery has been by her side ever since.

“I want him behind bars for life,” said Avery Godwin. “He doesn’t need to be out, because if he does he could do this to someone else or he’ll finish it off with my sister.”

A petition to the Mobile County Alabama Prosecutor with over 1500 signatures reads:

    1. AJ Billings7:31 PM

So sad that we have such hatred spewed out by the evangelical churches, the Teaparty, and the self righteous and bigoted Repubs

This is a real tragedy for the poor women, and the family, of all times on Thanksgiving.

I hope they execute that guy for this crime, since supporting him in jail to the tune of $30k per year is a waste of money

    2. Obviously, Mr. Hawkins is dealing with his own deep-seated gayness.

    3. Anita Winecooler9:44 PM

I honestly don't know what's worse, the perp being out on bail, or his family watching this happen and not doing a thing to stop it.

Please sign the petition, it's the least we can do, Mallory needs to know people care.

    4. I signed the petition and shared it with my facebook page. It currently has over 65,000 signatures.

  10. Anonymous6:55 PM

WOW! I turned on FOX news just in time to see Karl Rowe melt down during the election and now this. Maybe I should start to watch Fox more often! Well done Mr Ricks.

  11. Anonymous6:57 PM

    Perhaps the spell is broken?

  12. Anonymous7:32 PM

Fox went from being informative to self important to becoming a parody of the GOP.

    Now they are a laughingstock.

  13. Anonymous7:34 PM

It's one for the books. About time. I do hope Sarah was watching this and realizes her career is all but over. Just am waiting now for the announcement that Fox isn't renewing her contract. That's going to be sweet.

    1. Fox probably won't announce the non-renewing of $arah's contract.

Instead, they'll kick her quietly into the night.

  14. Anita Winecooler9:51 PM

    Off Topic

Jesse, saw a clip on bbc news about this, and thought it might interest you-

Science (and love) may be universal languages!

  15. Sally in MI1:39 AM

When my Fox-confused sister sent me an emial about the horror of Benghazi and how our President "killed four Americans," I was stunned to read what the Fox spin on this tragedy had become. The more I read, the madder I got. As the facts have trickled out, I have become incensed that Fox has been allowed to twist facts, blatantly lie, and make our intelligence people out to be stupid. Thank you, Mr. Ricks, for sticking up for the good guys!

    1. I really wish Fox News hadn't won that lawsuit that allows them to lie to their viewers. There are too many people that believe everything they are saying. Thank you Tom Ricks! Telling the truth on that station may have only gotten you 90 seconds of airtime, but I can assure you, you are going to be very well known to many people for doing what you did.

I'm hoping to see you soon on Rachel Maddow. I imagine you will have more than 90 seconds of air time there!

  16. Leland2:40 AM

So this idiot blames the GIRLFRIEND for his sister being a lesbian?

    Truly intelligent. (NOT!)

  17. Leland2:46 AM

They keep forgetting one of the prime guidelines for any lawyer: Never ask a question to which you don't already know the answer!

  18. Randall3:38 AM

Amazing: the truth on Fox News!
    It's a rare thing.

  19. Buckeye Bitch5:41 AM

““Oh, you mean they're supposed to be a REAL news show? Here all this time I thought they were like a Colbert rip-off...only not funny. Except for the Sarah SHE'S funny! And Karl...watching him do his Porky Pig routine on election night...that was entertaining!!” I'm really confused. Maybe they ARE a Colbert rip-off...but this one really WAS funny!”

Fox News: Tom Ricks Apologized For Benghazi Criticism; Ricks: No, I Didn’t

Fox News Channel executive vice president Michael Clemente on Monday responded to the much-discussed interview with Tom Ricks, claiming that the Pulitizer Prize winner apologized privately for criticizing the network's coverage of the September attack in Benghazi, Libya. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Clemente accused Ricks of using the interview to generate publicity for his new book, The Generals. Clemente also seemed to take exception to the lack of public contrition from Ricks.

“When Mr. Ricks ignored the anchor’s question, it became clear that his goal was to bring attention to himself -- and his book," Clemente told THR via email. "He apologized in our offices afterward but doesn’t have the strength of character to do that publicly."

But that's news to Ricks, who told THR in his own email that he never offered an apology to Fox — privately or publicly.

"Please ask Mr. Clemente what the words of my supposed apology were. I'd be interested to know," Ricks said. "Frankly, I don't remember any such apology."

Tom Ricks Disputes Fox Exec’s Claim He Apologized For Testy Benghazi Interview That Was Cut Short

  22. He'll probably get the same treatment that Bruce Bartlett describes as happening to him:
"Among the interesting reactions to my book is that I was banned from Fox News. My publicist was told that orders had come down from on high that it was to receive no publicity whatsoever, not even attacks. Whoever gave that order was smart; attacks from the right would have sold books. Being ignored was poison for sales.

I later learned that the order to ignore me extended throughout Rupert Murdoch’s empire. For example, I stopped being quoted in the Wall Street Journal.* Awhile back, a reporter who left the Journal confirmed to me that the paper had given her orders not to mention me. Other dissident conservatives, such as David Frum and Andrew Sullivan, have told me that they are banned from Fox as well. More epistemic closure."

The complete article is worthy of your time, too.

Author and reporter Tom Ricks on Tuesday kept the heat on Fox News Channel after an executive for the network claimed in an interview that the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist apologized in private for his sharp criticism of Fox's coverage of the September attack in Benghazi.

FNC executive vice president Michael Clemente told the Hollywood Reporter that Ricks apologized behind closed doors following his appearance on the network on Monday, something the Ricks denied ever took place. In an interview with Politico's Mackenzie Weinger on Tuesday, Ricks gave an even more critical assessment of Clemente's claims, as well as the journalistic practices of both Fox and the Hollywood Reporter.

“Clemente is making it up, and it is sloppy of Hollywood Reporter to not ask him for specifics (what exactly am I alleged to have said?) and also to seek a response from me,” Ricks wrote via email. “Why are they doing this? Because their MO is that when the facts aren’t on their side, they attack the person.”

Tom Ricks: Fox News 'is making it up'

Author Tom Ricks on Tuesday said Fox News is “making it up” that he apologized after slamming the network during an on-air interview as “operating as a wing of the Republican Party” and hyping Benghazi for political reasons.

Ricks told POLITICO that Michael Clemente, Fox’s executive vice president of news, made the claim he apologized privately because “when the facts aren’t on their side, they attack the person.”

“Clemente is making it up, and it is sloppy of Hollywood Reporter to not ask him for specifics — what exactly am I alleged to have said? — and also to seek a response from me,” Ricks wrote in an e-mail. “Why are they doing this? Because their MO is that when the facts aren’t on their side, they attack the person.”

Clemente told The Hollywood Reporter that Ricks apologized privately to the network after the Monday interview.

“When Mr. Ricks ignored the anchor’s question, it became clear that his goal was to bring attention to himself -- and his book," Clemente told THR in an e-mail. "He apologized in our offices afterward but doesn’t have the strength of character to do that publicly."

Ricks added that the first person he spoke with after going off-air was Fox News’s Bret Baier. Baier has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Asked about the discrepancy, Clemente referred POLITICO to Fox News communications representative Dana Klinghoffer, who has yet to respond. Neither Clemente or Klinghoffer responded when asked to comment on the charge that Clemente lied about Ricks' apology.
