Well so much for the Republicans moving more to the middle and ignoring their batshit crazy base. Yeah, not so much.

You know immediately after the election there was all of this silly talk about the Republicans becoming introspective and  REALLY examining how they lost, and possibly even deciding that they needed to move more towards the middle, and really start to make themselves more accessible to..oh I don't know...people that read.

Do you remember that? Wasn't that an exciting idea?

Well never mind, because it ain't happening!

Yesterday it was revealed that Marco Rubio, the living embodiment of the path forward for the GOP (He even has that brown skin that is so in fashion these days), said this to GQ magazine in answer to a question about the age of the earth:

I'm not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that's a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States. I think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. I'm not a scientist. I don't think I'm qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all. I think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that. It's one of the great mysteries.

"I'm not a scientist man."  When have truer words ever been spoken? Somehow I don't think that ANYONE is going to mistake Marco Rubio for a scientist! "I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that. It's one of the great mysteries." Yes it is, to anybody who cannot figure out how to open a freaking science book that is!

And not only is Marco Rubio NOT a scientist, he is also NOT the symbol for change that the GOP needs to be pin their hopes on for the next election cycle.

Clearly all Rubio is, is a browner version of every dipshit, creationist pandering, Republican that eschews science in deference to the ignorance of the Republican base, in the hopes of gaining their inbred toothless support.

You know this is just a suggestion, and I know I represent the enemy camp, but wouldn't it be better if instead of the politicians dumbing themselves down in order to relate to their base, that they worked to educate their constituents so that they could make make informed, intellectual deci....oh never mind, I see why that wouldn't work.

P.S. By the way, just for everybody's information, the earth is 4.54 billion years old.  Obviously Marco Rubio doesn't understand the complexities of Google either.

Um, excuse me, but since when has ANYONE said the parents don't have the right to teach their children what their faith says?

The last I heard, the argument was about teaching religious doctrine and dogma (and to any intelligent person, christian mythology) in PUBLIC schools. Did anyone happen to ask him to clarify that point?

    Of course....

    NOT!

    Reminder:

Rubio was not forthcoming with the 'true' story of when his parents came to the country. It drew media attention when he was being talked about or considered as either running for President or for the VP slot (can't recall exactly what/when due to so much info overload!!) but then dropped by the media.

Media found information that his parents came to the US prior to when they said they did and what he spews in speeches and appearances and never suffered in Cuba like he spews about as he says they were 'escaping' the Castro regime and whatever the situation was at that time, which I forget and am too lazy this morning to research -- but it's not true. The story never straigtened itself out. He comes to this with much baggage as his parents would have documentation as to when they arrived but he's neglected to pay attention to that but the media did and had the info as they came years earlier than he states and spews about.

He like his GOP ilk -- he's a liar.

The only reason Rubio is relevant is because he is Hispanic and the GOP has finally realized that they are tanking with that segment of society. What is Rubio? Brilliant? No. Honest? Not particularly. Open-minded? No way in hell. Ambitious? You nailed it! He's going nowhere, IMHO.

And he's brown. Which proves the Tea Party and Republicans in general are not racist.

The media is treating Bobby Jindal like the smart one in the group because he came out about Romney's comments last week.

People should know that Jindal pushed through his state that Creationism be taught in public schools.

Wish the media would include that fact when they speak of him and his Romney pushback.

In my state of Indiana, the outgoing ReTHUGlican governor was just appointed President of the land grant university of Indiana , Purdue, by trustees he appointed while gov. Talk about cronyism - he has NO academic qualifications His first interview he mused about closing one of the two regional campuses in the Democratic northwest corner of the state, showing his complete ignorance of the difference between a flagship residential campus and regional, non-traditional, working commuter students. It did show that ReTHUGS are vengeful and that they want the electorate to remain dumb. Only way they can get elected.

Ironically, Rubio-the-Puppet sits on the Commerce, SCIENCE, and Technology committee. Isn't that just wonderful to have his lack of science expertise sitting in one of those chairs?

I would call them SEEINTISTS. ....Only believe what they see, and only see what they believe.

  10. When a person is immersed in a belief system (religion), it is his/her entire frame of reference. It is the concept-bubble from which the world is viewed and all logic and reason operate within that belief system so all "truths" to such a person are framed by it. Imagine feeling that Almighty God! who loves you so much! is being denied and betrayed by thinking outside the dogma bubble: the Bible.

There are intellectually honest people of faith who don't live in the fundamentalist bubble, those we can have real dialogue with, as they are open to listening and seeing new ways (as we should be). They are the intellectually curious who don't have all the answers.

The others? Nope. They know everything, nothing to discuss.

Sam, for the most part I must agree with you. I also, though, have to say that a tremendous number of these poor fools are brainwashed from birth! Only the very few are able to even THINK about questioning.

I can't forgive them even so, however. I can PITY them and understand them (a little), but I can't forgive them for trying to subvert our Constitution by demanding WE live and act as THEY feel we must.

PUSH PUSH PUSH because they were brainwashed into believing all sorts of shit. It isn't just science. It is also LAW. I would be willing to BET that MANY want to bring back the Old Testament Laws. And if you think Sharia Law is tough....

    2. I think it's not so much a matter of forgiving them, or even pitying them. It's just that they literally can't see any other way with their beliefs as a very opaque filter. There doesn't seem to be anything to emote over one way or the other, forgive or pity. Just staying with reality and knowing it's so is enough. They're not crazy, no, but brainwashed fits.

Rubio is an opportunist. He will say or do anything make money, whether hinky real estate deals, using GOP credit card for personal items, or insider deals on the govt dime.

Sound familiar? Rubio = Palin, only not so insane, but just as entitled.

Where you really start to see big changes towards Obama are in what I like to call "The Real Alaska"... where glaciers are crashing into the ocean, bear populations are thinning, permafrost is melting, the land is being raped for oil, and the native populations are "47%-ers".

House District 40, which includes all of the North Slope Borough and Northwest Arctic Borough. The North Slope Borough alone covers an expanse the size of the U.S. State of Michigan (and yes, that includes the lakes that are within Michigan's borders), however there are less than 10,000 people who live there permanently. The population is 68% American Indian. The North Slope's largest town is Barrow, on the northernmost tip of Alaska. The North Slope also includes the ANWR.

    2008: 54-44 McCain/Palin (R+10)
    2012: 67-29 Obama/Biden (D+38)

A swing of 48 points. There are some other boroughs in the real Alaska that may have even bigger swings...

  18. Another "pretender to the throne," delusional Wisconsin governor Scott Walker may be feeling the noose tightening. One of his former aides was sentenced to a mere six months in prison for campaigning for Walker's gubernatorial election while employed by the taxpayers in Walker's county executive office.

The investigation and charges are still on-going. Up next is Walker's chief aide.

Maybe we'll get a two-fer in the new year. Palin: Dairygate; Walker: Campaigngate.

Their religion dictates to them that the earth is only thousands of years old. They're not going to give that up because of an election and so that's not going to be a part of coming together. Forget it. Coming together and working together is going to have to be outside those parameters for many years to come.

  22. Rubio self-identifies as Catholic, a faith whose catechism teaches that the Bible was never intended to be taken literally. Genesis, for example, was not written as an historical record, but a liturgical poem.

The father of the big bang theory (Georges Lemaitre) and the father of genetics (Gregor Mendel) were both Catholic priests. Evolution has been taught in Catholic schools for many years.

My guess is Rubio didn't pay attention in any of his science classes, or he went to a podunk school where the school board gave their stamp of approval to archaic, fundamentalist-type textbooks. A third possibility is that he's playing stupid to suck up to his constituents.

Well, conservatism and reason never really got along all that well...

Still, frustrating. How in Jeebus' name are we to move forward with the huge issues (yes, climate change is one - our CO2 levels continue to rise as does our average temperatures) when we're arguing something already established by multiple scientific disciplines like the age of the earth?!?

Good ole prop Marco Rubio is the GOP's excuse for making the statement "See? We LOVE hispanics! Some of our BEST friends are hispanic!". Palpable.

Does he have the same speech writers as Screechy? The question is about the age of the world, and he's all over the map using the wrong reference book.

Next Question: What books or magazines have you read?
