Certain loud mouthed restaurant owner's anti-Obama rhetoric has resulted in negative perception from consumers.

Courtesy of Brand Index:

Anti-Obamacare rhetoric from Papa John’s CEO and a major Applebee’s franchise owner appear to have driven down both chains’ consumer perception with casual dining eaters in the US, and are still impacted two weeks after those remarks were made.

Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter’s post-Election Day comments about passing on health care reform costs by reducing worker hours and raising prices coincides with a swift negative reaction among casual food diners seemingly accelerated by the November 13th class action lawsuit accusing Papa John's of sending unsolicited text messages to customers.

Despite Schnatter’s Huffington Post op-ed on November 20th claiming his words were twisted, Papa John’s perception levels continued to experience one of its sharpest drops of the year, sending it well below rival Pizza Hut.

Zane Tankel, the CEO of Applebee’s franchisee Apple-Metro, appeared on Business News and made similar comments, saying Obamacare would force him not to hire any more workers and consider cutting their hours. Applebee’s perception had dropped since his TV appearance.

One exception to these two examples is Denny’s. Franchisee John Metz, who runs 40 locations, said in mid-November that he would add a 5% surcharge to customers' bills and reduce his employees' hours. Denny’s perception with casual diners declined afterwards, but much less so than Papa John’s and Applebee’s. However unlike those two chains, Denny’s has since rebounded close to where they were before Metz’s remarks, potentially due to CEO John Miller’s apologetic statement a few days later.

You know personally I really don't want to know what the political opinions are of the  owners of the restaurant or businesses I visit, but if I know they are assholes, like these guys, I will avoid them like the plague. Which by the way is not very hard in this case because I don't like ANY of these three restaurants and have not eaten at one of them in over fifteen years.

What I think these idiots are learning the hard way is that people like President Obama. And just because their personal Fox News driven opinion is negative, they are in fact in the minority.

I live in NY, where the good pizza comes from.

He can take his gross, cardboard cutout knock off pizza and his mistreatment and lack of compassion for his employees, and go elsewhere.

Because regardless of what you may think about NYers, we DO take care of neighbors. We DO care about the well being of our neighbors. It's just ridiculous to think that 'Papa John' believes his customers would refuse to pay a couple more cents to ensure his employees are granted health insurance.

And I'm sure most other Americans feel the same way, seeing how his brands reputation has plummeted.

What a nice hole you've dug for your self, John. I hope it's comfortable, you're going to be there for a while.

Denny's...Seniors go there. Lots of "older" seniors who don't have or want computers. These things are not reported on msm.
So that is probably why Denny's hasn't suffered yet.
One other is Red lobster<---boycott it
      Olive garden, also too.
When are these idiots going to learn? There more of "us" than them?

We eat and shop with an eye on the values of those who would benefit from our patronage. Bought that pizza every couple of weeks, never again. Wanted to try that chicken, not any more. When we drive by any of these chains' locations, we are reminded of their "-isms" and renew our disgust. And don't get me started on Koch Bros products.

Just shut up and mind your business...drag your business into the dirt and suffer the consequences. If you feel the need to broadcast your opinions to all, it's your right, and my right to react accordingly.

I agree 100%, I haven't ordered Papa Johns since that idiot Schnatter opened up his big yap about Obamacare. Business owners just just sell their fucking pizza without a side of petty political grievances. I have bought from my local pizza places even though some don't deliver.

Sorry Papa, if you want to sell pizza, you shoulda kept your mouth shut . Why anyone would piss off half their customer base is beyond me.

The article failed to mention that corporate Denny's shut down that hole thing in 24 hours and that that is probably why the brand ID hasn't changed. I, for one, will not be eating at any Darden restaurants any time soon -- they're cutting hours for their employees so that they don't have to give them healthcare. Which I think is worse than charging more for their stuff. They're taking it out on the employees which is dicky. If you're wondering, Darden owns Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Longhorn, Seasons 52, Capital Grille and Bahama Breeze.

This overt sharing of their political leanings started heavily in the 2008 election. I haven't been to Home Depot or Hobby Lobby (I was frightened by a Palin end-cap) in years. Frankly, I too would prefer if they all shut the hell up and just ran their business, donated privately, and treated their employees like humans instead of part time slaves. But if they choose to make asses of themselves I'm quite content not to step into their franchises.

Turns out nobody wants a side of politics with their pizza.

The opinion of Papa John's among recent casual diners dropped precipitously after CEO John Schnatter's public comments about Obamacare, according to a new study from YouGov BrandIndex, which researches brand perception for marketing directors, brand managers and PR reps. The site conducts thousands of interviews a day, providing real-time info that shows trends and responses to different marketing techniques or in this case, public gaffes.

The national pizza chain's YouGov BrandIndex Buzz score -- which the site uses as an indication of brand favorability -- dropped to four at the end of November, down from 32 on election day.

YouGov tracked the public's perception of three restaurants following anti-Obamacare comments made by company CEOs. Papa John's, Applebee's and Denny's all saw declines among adults who have eaten at casual dining restaurants in the past month. Denny's score even fell to zero after franchise owner John Metz announced a five percent 'Obamacare surcharge' in November. The brand's score jumped up to a six shortly afterwards "potentially due to CEO John Miller's apologetic statement a few days later," according to the YouGov report.

Applebee's score dropped more than 25 points after Zane Tankel -- who owns 40 Applebee's in the New York area -- appeared on the Fox Business Network and expressed reluctance to expand because of the health care overhaul.

Still, Papa John's fared the worst, despite Schnatter's attempts to clarify his statement in a HuffPost blog, writing:

I have never gone to Applebee's and never will now.
As for Denney's, the reason they did not suffer as much as Papa John's and Applebee's, and the reason they rebounded is because the CEO of Denney's came forward and said, it was one of their franchise owners who complained about Obamacare, and that that franchise owner's opinion and stance on Obamacare was not the opinion and stance of Denney's corporation/the Denney's chain.

A major restaurant chain said Tuesday that its complaints about President Obama's healthcare law have been bad for business.

Darden Restaurants, which owns Olive Garden and Red Lobster, had previously announced plans to cut its workers' hours so that it wouldn't have to provide health insurance under the law's employer mandate.

Darden is one of several large employers to consider rolling back workers' hours in response to the Affordable Care Act. But the company said Tuesday that negative publicity surrounding that position might be bad for business.

"A day without Florida Orange Juice is like a day without sunshine."

That was the famous ad campaign line by singer and beauty pageant winner Anita Bryant, the 'wholesome, christian anti-gay spokesperson for the Florida Orange Growers in the late 60's and 70's.

After her early success in pop music, Bryant later became a hugely successful spokesperson (and famous 'christian bobble-head'), representing Kraft and many other large corporations companies by the 70's. Then, she joined forces with the 'Moral Majority' and began her big push to 'Save the Children' from the 'gay recruiters'. Notice how Bryant identified her enemy as 'THESE PEOPLE' in her following quote which was the beginning of the end of her career as a public spokesperson:

"What these people really want, hidden behind obscure legal phrases, is the legal right to propose to our children that theirs is an acceptable alternate way of life. [...] I will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before."

The companies' brands she smeared in the process soon realized she was a liability and dropped her from representation and had to retrench in order to repair the damage to their brand.

Evidently Papa John and todays wingnut anti-Obamacare biz owners have forgotten or never learned the real lesson, and they would rather see THEIR OWN face promoted instead of their product or service.

Money is Green, Not Red or Blue.

Unless your business is selling political opinions or public policies on social issues, a business owner is exposing the business to an unnecessary by alienating half the country. This is Business 101, but top Biz Schools will make a small fortune selling Weekend seminars and Boot Camps to executives in Corporate America in the future in order to teach them the basic lessons of business:

Know what business you're in and if it doesn't help you to sell more of your product, don't take a public political position.

  24. Here is another reason to avoid these AND ALL chain restaurants/stores -- they leech money and jobs from the local economy. The only money they put into the local economy are the salaries they pay -- all pretty low -- and an occasional donation to a local charity, which is usually trumpeted and gets into the paper and shows them to be so generous. RIGHT!

But, their profits go to corporate headquarters rather than back into the community. For instance, they tend to use corporate accountants, lawyers, etc. As a consequence of this study after study have shown that locally owned and managed business put much more into the local economy than chain businesses do. See this summary of some of those studies:http://www.preservationnation.org/main-street/resources/public/independents-vs-chains.html

So, support your local merchants and restaurants and just stay away from any chain store anytime you can.

Interesting that all three restaurants are best known for food that is terrible for you. We're faced with a national obesity epidemic because these companies like to sling out cheap food made edible by an excess of fat, sugar, and salt. They make a profit by encouraging obesity. Contributing to health care coverage is a reasonable cost of doing business.

Personally, I avoid these kinds of places like the plague. If I'm eating pizza, I want a great pizza and not waste the calories on Papa John's nasty stuff. If I'm having mac 'n cheese, I'll make it myself with whole grain pasta and sharp cheddar. A spoonful of that satisfies better than a bucket of Applebees fried mac. Half the time when I travel, I stop at a gas station rather than fast food. Sad state of affairs when I can get a fresher, healthier, better tasting meal at a gas station than a "restaurant"!

Adding my voice to all those who have already encouraged everyone to BUY LOCAL. The product and service will almost always be better. Small business owners have a stake in the local community.

Just remember - a chain store is a once small businessman gone greedy, and their employees pay the price while the quality of the product or service you buy is diminished.

Nobody goes broke by paying a few dollars more for a handmade, delicious, quality pizza at a locally owned Italian restaurant.

And while we're at it, move your bank accounts out of the big banks. Small local banks and credit unions can give you the same services.

I've scrubbed almost all the chain stores off my radar and quite frankly, see very little difference in the budget.
