Newt Gingrich on possibility of Hillary Clinton as candidate in 2016: "The Republican party is incapable of competing at that level."

This was Newt Gingrich on Meet the Pres this morning, courtesy of HuffPo:

"First of all, she's very formidable as a person," he said. "She's a very competent person. She's married to the most popular Democrat in the country; they both think [it] would be good for her to be president. It makes it virtually impossible to stop her for the nomination."

In addition to having Bill Clinton's support, Hillary Clinton would also have the backing of President Barack Obama, who will still be a "relatively popular president," Gingrich added. "Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl."

"The Republican party is incapable of competing at that level."

I watched this exchange this morning and then also watched the Chris Matthews Show, which also discussed her possible run.

Essentially the conventional wisdom is that if she runs for the Democratic nomination (And everybody thinks she will), her success is a foregone conclusion, and as a Presidential candidate she would be virtually unstoppable.

I have to say that, from here at least, 2016 is looking pretty damn good.

Just imagine the Democrats holding the White House for 16 years in total. No WONDER the Republicans are pissing themselves right now.

Sarah Palin must be pissing in her pants, if her emaciated body were capable of even having enough nutrients to expel waster - other than what comes out of her mouth or typed with her fingers.

She might just blow a gasket with defeatist talk like that coming from her real Americun hero Newtie boy.

Hillary will not run unless forced in by the Governor's entry. Should Sarah announce early (my preference would be January at the expiration of her Fox contract), it will force Hillary's hand. It will also put the Governor in the position of being the leader of Republican Party as opposed to the wobbly quisling Boehner.

If the two women get in early, the media will coalesce (congeal) around the meme of the first woman president. They might even cut the Governor some slack and support her quest for the Republican nomination (of course to tear her down later but let's take what we can get).

If the Governor waits too long not much good will come of it. If she gets in now, as Suki Pero described it, she would be the defacto president for the next four years. Her early entry along with Hillary's (whether she makes it official or not right away) could freeze the field. Otherwise we are looking at a dozen candidates on both sides. Can you see the Governor on a mile wide stage during primary debates. I can't.

HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA! Oh my.."defacto President?" How do they figure that? Sarah wouldn't even knwo what that meant, and sorry guys, but when AIles dumps her, just who will have her on their shows? The woman still does nothing but attack people. And just what is going to happen with all the GOP Governors who are working so hard to stay in the news while keeping their jobs (albeit, many of them are ruining their states!) Are they just going to sit down and watch Hillary destroy Palin? Oh wait..they might.

I so agree w/Newt (and I haven't EVER before this subject!) - the Repubs have no one that can compete against Hillary - I can't think of a one of them that could be successful in going up against her.

Wouldn't it be a kick in the butt to have Dems in the White house for 16 years? We could turn things around completely which would be so good for the country. And, there is not much the 'reds' could do about it which tickles the hell out of me!

They do have Jeb Bush, who has some baggage, but has name recognition, speaks Spanish, and served his time as a Governor for 8 years.

Yes, he certainly has some legacy problems being Shrub's brother, but I think he's more pragmatic than W ever was, and probably smarter.

I do think Hillary would probably win, but if Jeb steers a moderate course on social issues, runs a good campaign, and kills off the teaparty nutcases early, he would have a shot in 2016

  12. The best response to Newt's babbling is to ignore him, because he has proven that he's in the political scene to grift for himself personally, and for nothing else. Newt has reduced himself to the butt of a joke in Republican politics, and it's not even fun to use him as a punching bag. Officially, he's off anyone's chart who even knows their head from their ass, and has zero credibility other than just being a blow-hard grenade-thrower. Anyone who even has a conversation with him lowers their own standing. Newt just says shit about anything he can to get a camera on him or a reporter quoting him.

Bottom Line: Who gives a shit what Newt thinks abut anything or anybody?

    Answer: Only Newt.

Sarah will come out fightin' like a girl and when the squirmish is over Gingrich will be too ravished to ever again say anything positive about any other American woman. He'll be the first to endorse her when she makes her famous unconventional ninja jedi chess-playin' run in 2016.

I don't think Hillary will run again. She'd be worth her weight in diamonds as VP, though.

I'm not so sure she will run actually. Poor woman; I'm sure she's absolutely completely totally 100% exhausted! Running in 2016 means another TWELVE years of seventy hour weeks and no family time and no personal time. Dammit, when you've worked that hard don't you deserve to enjoy life a little and retire and relax? I'm just not certain she has the heart to put herself through that; and I certainly wouldn't blame her and would do the same thing myself. It's one thing if she won in 2008 and Obama ran in 2016 due to age differences...but this way it's a fifty year hard slogging career with little time to enjoy oneself and spend time with family and friends. This isn't a gender thing; I think it of all politicians up there in age. It's sadly the sort of thing people regret on their death beds (like the ad exec in NZ who was absolutely right!) as they gaze at their significant others and realise how little they've gotten to spend with them :(.

After reading her autobiography a few years ago, I would have to say that she thrives in a hard-driving environment and I doubt very much that she could sit back and relax -- she'd be bored silly! She's also very competitive, and alsovery much concerned with the welfare and well-being of her country. Her patriotism, matched with ambition, convinces me she will indeed seek the 2016 nomination. And she'll have absolutely no trouble amassing a huge "warchest"; in fact, I'm quite sure it's started already!

Just as stopped clocks are right twice a day, Mr. Gringrich might be right about this, but Democrats would heed advice from Mr. Gingrich at their peril.

    well...

hillary has worked hard to get where she is. no doubt.

I get bothered by the whole idea that the pool is so limited that we need to fall back on main-stays. really, can't the us have a first female prez who is not the spouse of a former prez?

I'm not trying to slight hillary it's just that it bothers me to think the pool is so small in such a large country that it's left up to a former first lady to be the next leader of the country. its really not good if we are relying on the old-team to take us forward when there's no one new to lead us in to the future.

  23. The love the GOP has for the Clintons will stop the instant Hillary indicates a Presidential run. The GOP want her to run so they can attack anything and everything about the Clintons

Newt says things to the benefit of Newt - not the democrats. They are simply loving Hillary at the minute because they so hate President Obama. The later passed health care - the former did not.

What the GOP do not want to run against in 2016 is a white heterosexual male. If PBO had been white he would have won in close to 50 states. There would be no "fiscal cliff" and no debt limit.

While the excitement about Hillary is good, it's premature. Also, I think that it is extremely important over the next four years that we do not forget politics at the local levels (city, county, state). It is important to concentrate some of this national energy at a local level. Otherwise, as we've seen in too many states (e.g., Wisconsin, Michigan), the right-wing reactionaries will say one thing to be elected and then do another in office, hoping to create a "trickle-up" reactionary take-over.
