Governor Rick Scott's blurring of the line between church and state, by allowing public school students to read "inspirational messages" at assemblies, has attracted support....from Floridia Satanists.

Courtesy of New York Daily News:

Florida Gov. Rick Scott doesn’t seem to have many fans these days. But he can count on the backing of one group: Satanists.

Members of the Satanic Temple are gearing up to rally on behalf of the Republican leader to commend “his defense of religious liberty,” the group said in a news release.

In particular, Satanists say they are impressed by Scott’s support of Senate Bill 98, which allows school districts to draft policies allowing students to read “inspirational messages” at assemblies and sports events.

“The bill is something we felt we could latch onto,” Lucien Greaves, a spokesperson for the Satanic Temple, told the Daily News. “It does allow for an alternative point of view.”

In the release, the group praises the bill, which went into effect July 12, for reaffirming “our American freedom to practice our faith openly, allowing our Satanic children the freedom to pray in school.”

Greaves added the bill, which was slammed by groups like Americans United for Separation of Church and State, helps “alternative, marginalized religions.”

“When it comes to faith-based initiatives, that’s the kind of the thing that gives minority religions access to foundational funding,” he said.

The rally is set to take place on Jan. 25 on the steps of the State Capitol in Tallahassee. Greaves likened the event to a “Satanic coming out.”

Hmm methinks this may NOT have been the kind of support that Governor Scott was hoping to attract. But hey, they are Florida voters so maybe he will welcome their support and embrace them with open arms.

Or perhaps not.

Interestingly enough the truth about Satanists is kind of like the truth about witches. In other words, whatever you heard about them from the Christian church was pure bullshit.

In fact Satanists are NOT worshipers of Satan, and are probably more in line with Atheists or Agnostics. (You can learn more about them here.)

You know at first I was a little surprised that the Satanists would want to be associated with somebody associated with the Tea Party and who seems to push a Christian agenda.

But then I remembered THIS picture.

And it all just kind of made sense.

I wonder if there will be a counter protest by the bible-thumpers, holy rollers, and the Westboro Baptist Church..."Ladies and Gentlemen, "Let's get ready to Rrruuumble!"

Exactly. I could've slept in this morning since you had my thoughts covered in your well-stated, succinct post.

  4. A Satanist was part of our circle of associates for a while; along with a few Wiccans (they dislike each other). When a book on witches was passed around a group, he took it because he was part of the circle, but then he promptly washed his hands. The Wiccans seemed more accepting of him than he of them.

Leaving a party after nightfall, he had my husband and I walk him to his car. He was afraid of the dark! He was very interested in sex and felt Satanism would sway the minds of women in his favor. He also wanted to write about vampires.

I was willing to let members of the Satanist group speak at our house, but a very Christian man took me aside and warned against it; he was afraid of evil spirits being attracted to our home, sort of like the Exorcist. I still don’t believe that, but I acted on his wishes since he was so sincere and worried on my behalf.

LOL I love it!! I don't think the irony is lost on these folks. Can't wait to hear what their kids "inspirational messages" sound like.

  6. Very appropriate, since Scott is a doppelganger for Lord Voldemort:

  7. I know the Christian community has tried to lump Wiccans and Satanist together, but I believe that Christians and Satanist are a closer match.

At least they believe in the same deities.

My niece wrote and delivered a prayer at her Texas Middle School on Veteran's Day. Knowing It is a public school, I asked my mom (who sent me the pix my sister had sent her of it) when Texas decided to dosobey the Constitution (also, my sister NEVER attended church as a kid.) My mom asked her and we got back some smarmy remark about "this is a close district and we care about one another, unlike the liberal schools." WTF? So giving a Christian prayer in a school where I am certain there are at least a few non-Christians is showing caring? Only in a GOP-shrunken brain.

I read the link you provided. It says it's a common misconception that Satanists worship Satan. Really? If that's the case they might help their cause a bit more if they didn't dress up in devil costumes. Also, if people are going to start a group based on a character from Christianity they have no reason to cry that they are being misunderstood by Christians. Perhaps their group could consider a name change and hire a better PR person. Right now they look and act like a bunch of teenagers living in a "Twilight" world because they want to believe they are vampires.

Project much? It's too tempting to take a bite of this one. Some would say that the faux christianist fundamentalists should change their name to "Do it my fucking way or you're going to hell. And if you're a librul, you're going to hell. And give us our goddam tax breaks", but the.long name would be rather cumbersome and too close to a perfect fit. Even Ghandi had the non-followers of Jesus pegged back when he was alive. How many generations have "christians" been this fill of hate for their fellow man? Any of em. All of em. Just never as bad as they are now.

And they DARE constantly run down and criticize others, when they're standing there with a "log in their eye".

Project what? I think you are assuming me to be a Christian and that I am defending Christianity? Your imagination is reading things into my statement that aren't there. I am not even a religious person.

Let me explain it: Satan is a Christian character. One has to know the Christian reference to Satan in order to understand i.e., people dressed in devil costumes would mean very little to a Hindu unfamiliar with Christian mythology. Satan worshippers have no right to claim more authenticity or knowledge of a character than the people who created him (Christians) and then claim the Christians are the ones who are mistaken in assigning his attributes.

Perhaps this analogy might make it more clear: J.K. Rowling (The Christian)created the Harry Potter characters. At one point she came under criticism from readers because they didn't like the turn one of her stories took, telling her the move was out of character and not keeping with the mythical world they have come to believe is real. They (Satanists) break off and assign new traits to the character Ms. Rowling created telling her she misunderstands the character she herself created. To someone like me who has never read a Harry Potter book (Hindu) and doesn't understand any of the references, they all just look like a bunch of strangely dressed people running with brooms between their legs who think they are flying.

And you think I should take any of these people seriously?

And all the references to "librul", "goddam tax breaks", and "hate for their fellow man" is your imagination reading things that aren't there. Or to use your word, projecting.

Satanists are a mixed bunch. Even the ones who say they believe in Satan have differing ideas about what Satan is. Devil? Principle of evil? Representative of the opponent of "that which tries to control us"?

But in my experience, many of them are simply publicity whores, and love to do things like this to call attention to themselves.
