  3. Gryphen, the political climate of Spokane, WA isn't much different than the Matsu Valley. They aren't QUITE your kind of people.

But obviously someone or something has a sense of humor like yours... ;-)

Spokane is scary! Full of right wingers and christians. I'm sure that's a christian middle finger pointing at all the "haters".

Never venture east of the Cascades in either Washington or Oregon and you run into a lot less crazies.

I am near Spokane, and yes, Spokane is bizarre. Even people from Spokane make fun of it. There are a few progressive folks but overall it is a dreary and depressing city in the middle of great natural beauty.

As Western cities go, Spokane is really quite lovely which is why it was chosen as the site of the National Historic Preservation Conference this year. It's really a hidden gem in many ways with a park system designed by the Olmstead Brothers, fascinating topography, a remarkable symphony and performance hall, Gonzaga basketball, one of the most extensive public golf course systems in the country -- and it ranks 5th on the list of cities with the largest LGBT populations. Etc. Young person in-migration is strong due to the affordable housing stock -- creative types. The right wingers and fundies [like in so many cities] are to be found in the 'burbs and poorer outlying areas and in what's now known as Spokane Valley. Careful with those stereotypes y'all. They might be outdated. That finger would elicit a chuckle, I promise.

Don't know what's funnier, the finger, or the Spokane News people making a "possible" excuse of "snow" wedged in a sign!

  8. I have lived in Spokane for 44 years. There is a large contingent of us liberals still around.

Anita -- You'll note it's FOX. City proper votes blue. It's sense of humor runs along these lines. "Dear Abby, I miss you already" . ;)

The East side and the smaller towns in Washington are pretty red. Not sure you will find it a progressive place. Go to Seattle. It is a bright blue city. Keeps the state blue because of it's dense population of highly educated and progressive thinking citizens. I thank God every day that the state was able to keep the governor's mansion blue. We had Crossroads and Karl Rove here trying mightily to get a Tea Party guy into office. We now have a rogue Dem senator who has sided with the Republicans to have a GOP majority in the state house. He needs to get booted out of office. He is really throwing his weight around and it has only been a week. What an arrogant jerk.
