Courtesy of Bloomeberg News:
Barack Obama is the first president in more than five decades to win at least 51 percent of the national popular vote twice, according to a revised vote count in New York eight weeks after the Nov. 6 election.
State election officials submitted a final tally Dec. 31 that added about 400,000 votes, most of them from provisional ballots in the Democratic-stronghold of New York City that were counted late in part because of complications caused by Hurricane Sandy.
The president nationally won 65.9 million votes -- or 51.1 percent -- against Republican challenger Mitt Romney, who took 60.9 million votes and 47.2 percent of the total cast, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Obama is the first president to achieve the 51 percent mark in two elections since Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, who did it in 1952 and 1956, and the first Democrat to do so since Franklin D. Roosevelt, who won four consecutive White House races. Roosevelt received 53.4 percent of the vote -- his lowest -- in his last race in 1944.
Does anybody else remember how the pundits kept telling us that in the 2012 election people were just not THAT enthusiastic about the President anymore?
Yeah, I seem to vaguely remember something like that.
And remember THIS is a victory that did not rely on voter suppression, gerrymandering, Supreme Court interference, or hacking into voting machines. In fact it happened DESPITE many of those things
In other words, "Fuck you, Karl Rove!"
"the pundits kept telling us that in the 2012 election people were just not THAT enthusiastic about the President anymore?"
ReplyDeleteWell, if I remember that far back..(holiday cheer be damned!) I believe those pundits were on Fox News or other spokesloonies for the Repub party.
Like Peggy Noonan saying she had a 'gut' feeling (trust me, Peggy, that was gas) and she wrote in a piece of garbage that Obama had all but lost the race because she saw a rise in Romney yard signs! Of course, those were in her neighborhood of South Palm Beach Florida. Unbelievable drivel.
These right-wing lunatic pundits are the cause of this country's downhill spiral...that Mr. Obama is doing his damndest to reverse.
Let us, unlike Rush Limbaugh, hope that the president is successful in that endeavor.
Trivial Pursuit question:
ReplyDeleteWho is the ONLY President to be sworn into office 4 times?
Well -- It's not one of their questions but should be!!
If I could turn type upside down, I'd post the answer like so many riddle answers appear on things!!
Yes -- 4 times
1st - Jan 20, 2009 - Roberts screwed up
2nd - Jan 21, 2009 - Roberts redid swearing in next day with evidence of press 'still' picture
3rd - Jan 20, 2013 - Roberts will swear him in in a private swearing in on Sunday Jan 20th which again will probably be evidenced by a press 'still' picture
4th - Jan 21, 2013 - Roberts will swear him in at the public inauguration
Well, of course, there was Franklin Roosevelt too.
DeleteAh, sweet irony that Mittens got 47% of the vote. He truly is Mr. 47% for all eternity.
ReplyDeleteI heard someone on TV joke that...47% of Romney's family is now mooching off him and he has not been able to get them to take responsibility. It's funny, like all jokes, because it's most likely close to the truth!
DeleteDamn, that smile just melts me. Barack has one of the most enchanting smiles I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteJanuary 2009, the Inauguration ….. never saw that coming, eh Dick?

Poor Sarah, with her losing her contract with Fox she won't be able to Obama bash to the public anymore, which will leave that poor refrigerator with deeper dents and anyone within hearing distance will hear the howl of the wicked witch of wasilla as she finally comes to the complete and utter realization that she is o.v.e.r.
ReplyDeleteshe won't be able to seethe and sputter over that black guy who 'stole' her mantle for VP. No matter what she depths of vileness she sank to with her attacks on him, none of it touched President Obama and she just became more dried up and shriveled, collapsing into her hate.
And that pathetic creature Orly Taitz has been foiled again when she sued to try and stop the count of the final electoral votes.
Slowly but surely the good guys are starting to win.
Her PAC should be drying up like a prune by now or relatively soon!! The Wasilla Witch is so cheap that there is no way she will use 'her own' money to do anything and there won't be anyone willing to pay her fees/expenses -- she'll be screwed. She actually have to pay her own bills in AK as the 'postage' won't be forthcoming with a dried up PAC!!
DeleteHas anyone confirmed that Sarah's contract was not renewed?
DeleteWOW!! Mean the RWNJ didn't try to get a recount? They probably, thought about it; before the official reading.
ReplyDeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteHOW AWESOME WOULD IT BE FOR BARNEY FRANK TO BE A SENATOR!!!
I heard that and it's great news. I bet he will win!
DeleteAnon 2:51
DeleteBarney only wants to fill the seat if Kerry gets appointed & confirmed Secretary of State. He doesn't want the seat 'permanently' -- he'd be a seat filler through the time of the debt ceiling, etc. for what would be approx 3 months time until special election which would be great as he knows his stuff on the subject and wouldn't be just like some 'seat fillers' -- Barney can add to the conversation -- intelligently!!
It keeps getting better!!!!!
DeleteThe only "seat" Sarah can temporarily take is the Porta Potty at the Flea Market- hell hath no fury like female junk pickers who gotta pee!
(And, yes, I know the real quote by William Shakespeare AND Proverbs 1:20-33 as references)
Anon at 3:42 pm. You are right. There couldn't be a better "seat warmer" at this time than Barney Frank. He certainly knows about financial issues and about the machinations of the recent House Republicans.
DeleteBeaglemom
And it looks like he's not wasting any time on tackling the next big, sticky, contentious, controversial, emotionally driven issue that's out of control, like the man of political courage that he has shown himself to be, time and time again.
ReplyDeleteWhite House Plans To Overwhelm NRA
The White House and gun control supporters are gearing up for a whirlwind month, with plans to pass reform legislation before outrage over the Sandy Hook massacre has a chance to fade.
While the fiscal cliff has dominated Washington’s attention in recent weeks, lawmakers and activists are laying the groundwork for their big push. Vice President Joe Biden, tasked with heading a commission to investigate gun violence, has been quietly meeting with experts, interest groups, and public officials and is expected to release a set of recommendations within weeks. Boston mayor Thomas Menino, co-chair of Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, told the Boston Herald this week that an optimistic Biden had assured him that Obama would sign legislation “by the end of January.”
“We had been led to believe their report would come by end of January, but we’re hearing they may want to have something out by January 15, even quicker than expected,” Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, told TPM.
House Democrats are moving ahead with their own plans as well. On Friday, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), chair of the newly created Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, announced the appointment of 12 vice chairs, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), the body’s leading voice on gun control. According to a Democratic aide, the group plans to release its recommendations in early February and is already organizing public hearings on the issue.
Obama has personally identified an assault weapons ban and limits on ammunition magazine size as top priorities. Other possible reforms could include background check requirements for purchases at gun shows, a loophole that’s helped create a huge market of off-record arms purchases.

Remember that Gallup Poll which claimed that Sarah Palin was one of the world's most admired women-- well, Gallup also predicted that Romney would beat Obama by one percentage point. Maybe we should take our own poll-- do you trust Gallup?
ReplyDeleteYes, and those asshole Republicans in Congress obviously didn't listen to the American people in the presidential election!
ReplyDeleteWhat friggin' idiots. I so hope that many of them lose their seats in 2014 and suspect they will.
If you haven't seen this yet, be sure to. Ohio's going after Rove.
ReplyDeletehttp://videocafe.crooksandliars.com/heather/karl-rove-served-subpoena-illegal-election
Thanks Lynne!
DeleteWow, that guy died in a plane crash? Where did Rove find inspiration??? Hmmmm....
Question for Karl Rove: how is that "permanent Republican majority" thing working out for you?
ReplyDeleteI wish we could find some good Dems to run in the Rethug Bagger districts and pull it out from under them. Sadly, the State Rethugs have stacked the decks.
ReplyDelete@Lynne--that's from 2010...anything more current?
ReplyDeleteYou're right. It just came up on one of my Facebook links, and I thought it was from last November. Oops. Now I'm so sad.
DeleteWell, it made me smile anyway!!!
DeleteWhat I love about this victory is that it shows that, despite all the hate-filled, racist rhetoric spewed by the right wing media outlets, the majority of the American people judged President Obama on the content of his character. And to think that even the sainted (in some minds) Regan couldn't accomplish this is just icing on the cake. So perfect!
ReplyDeleteLate Votes and the True Vote Model indicate that Obama may have won by 16 million votes.
ReplyDeleteSee Richard Charnin's blog about this issue. According to his analysis, Mr. Obama won the election by far more than 51%, perhaps closer to 60%, due to vote tampering by Republicans. He bases his results on exit polling data and raw precinct data. Check it out.

There he is, this man makes history and makes it look so easy!
ReplyDeleteI need sunglasses when he smiles!
When historians look back on the presidency of Barack Obama, one would hope that they view his legacy as more then just being the first African American President who succeeded despite having to overcome some of the worst treatment a President could withstand; or as more then the President responsible for the establishment of an affordable health care act ensuring healthcare coverage for all Americans; or responsible for having saved the U.S economy from a second depression; or for killing the number one mastermind terrorist in the world.
ReplyDeleteIndeed one would hope that that historians recognize that President Obama’s legacy is that of a true warrior for social justice. A man of the people who, despite being branded a Socialist ideologue by many on the right, recognized that government has a critical role to play in protecting the most vulnerable citizens among us and assisting in developing opportunities for all Americans. A steadfast true leader, who even when faced with obstruction from hostile political extremists on the right, is still ensuring that all Americans get a fair shake at the American dream. He has already already instituted numerous policies that has opened doors of access to those Americans who didn’t have it before. The President's endgame is a fair, just, and cohesive America where the collective body and the individual citizen have a mutually beneficial interest in working together for social progress.
Despite the obstruction he faced from an extremist fringe of Tea party Conservatives who rode into Congress in 2010 thinking they owned it, this President would not be deterred. Putting his career at risk at times, he instituted policies he believed would move the country forward and make it a better country for all citizens.
