I am sorry about showing you a video that comes from Glenn Beck's lunatic Right Wing website The Blaze, but sadly that was the best video I could find of the event.
Here is the text of her speech:
“Welcome to the White House, everyone. I am so honored to help introduce this year’s nominees for best picture, and to help celebrate the movies that lift our spirits, broaden our minds, and transport us to places we have never imagined…
“These 9 movies took us back in time and all around the world. They made us laugh, they made us weep, and they made us grip our arm rests just a little tighter. They taught us that love can endure against all odds, and transform our lives in the most surprising ways. And they reminded us that we can overcome any obstacle if we dig deep enough and fight hard enough and find the courage to believe in ourselves. These lessons apply to all of us no matter who we are, or what we look like, or who we love…”
Of course the First Lady's appearance did not sit too well with the conservatives who have already started to bitch about it.
First this from the same website from which I got this video:
Oh My God: The Academy actually drafts First Lady Michelle Obama to help present Best Picture from presumably the White House? So unnecessary and inappropriate to inject politics into the Oscars yet again. Hollywood will get pilloried by conservative pundits tomorrow. I don’t understand this very obvious attempt to turn off right-leaning audiences. Clearly the studios only want to sell their movies to half of America.
Yes because as we know the Obama's are only the President and First Lady for half of the American people, right?
But wait, there's more:
Has a First Lady ever intruded on Oscar night in such fashion? My memory says no, but it's possible this isn't the first time. It is, however, typical of a White House operation that excels in glamour over substance, that feels compelled to enter every public space from sporting events to late night shows to even the biggest night of the year for Hollywood.
Yes, the Obamas owe Tinsel Town plenty for all their support - financial and promotional - during the 2012 election. But there's simply no reason for Michelle Obama to be given the biggest assignment on Oscar night.
Conservative viewers, if there were any left by the time the show wrapped, will not soon forget this.
And of course the Washington Post weighed in as well:
It is not enough that President Obama pops up at every sporting event in the nation. Now the first lady feels entitled, with military personnel as props, to intrude on other forms of entertaining (this time for the benefit of the Hollywood glitterati who so lavishly paid for her husband’s election). I’m sure the left will holler that once again conservatives are being grouchy and have it in for the Obamas. Seriously, if they really had their president’s interests at heart, they’d steer away from encouraging these celebrity appearances. It makes both the president and the first lady seem small and grasping. In this case, it was just downright weird.
You know considering the fact that three of the nine nominees for Best Picture had overtly political themes (Lincoln, Argo, and Zero Dark Thirty) it seemed to me oddly fitting that the First Lady be the one to hand out the award. And like, am sure, most Americans I really enjoyed seeing Michelle Obama participate.
However with that being said, the fact that it ticks the Righties off so much just makes her appearance at the awards even more awesome.
Let's face it, both this President and his First Lady are going to be a hard act to follow. Especially for any uptight, repressed conservatives that might want to hold those positions in the future.
Update: By the way it looks like Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence has a message for those Right Wing critics of the First Lady's presentation.
You know I am liking this young woman more and more every day.
Oh, so classy. Not!
ReplyDeleteOh, darn. Maybe she needs to watch more Palin videos to upgrade her public image.
DeleteGlen Beck's website showed Michelle's entire performance? I am amazed. Wasn't that a bit risky for him? People might actually see what a wonderful lady she is.
Delete6:44 AM Good Morning resident TROLL. Your Hatred of someone more classy than you would ever be is evident. Would you rather that Pimp Daddy Todd Palin announce the Best Picture award? Sarah would have been too 'LOADED' and INCOHERENT to have done it. Bristol has no speaking skills and can't read. Willow would have to hide her post partum weight and has trouble understanding common words. So who do you think could have done a better job than the FLOTUS? As you always write: "GET A LIFE".

ReplyDeleteI do, it’s fun. It’s revenge. Some of us were called traitors when we didn’t support the smash-and-grab robbery of Iraq. Michelle is a natural performer, and her appearances are driving republicans to distraction… good.

Yeah, well Gryphen, you can remind them of this:
ReplyDeleteNotes on People; Reagan, on Tape, Will Greet Oscars Audience
Published: March 12, 1981
In his years as a Hollywood actor, Ronald Reagan never won an Academy Award nomination. But now that Mr. Reagan has moved on to another profession, he's been invited to appear on the Academy Awards program on March 30.
The President will remain in the White House and tape a brief greeting to the audience at the Oscar ceremonies, and his words will be televised early in the awards show.
''President Reagan was once a member of our industry and it seemed fitting for him to join us,'' said Norman Jewison, producer of this year's show.
He will not be the first President to make such an address. Franklin D. Roosevelt spoke to an Oscar audience by radio in 1941.

I stand corrected; as you see above, I gave attribution to James Carter the 4th - he's Jimmy Carter's grandson (yes, THE Jimmy Carter) and he's also the person who located and forwarded the 47% video to David Corn - and the rest, they say, is history. So, I had good reason to believe what he said was "the rill dill."

(also-- did you catch the undertones that they don't believe Michelle Obama deserved "the honor" of introducing Best Picture? I got that feeling)
DeleteThe REAL problem they are having is accepting that the Obama's are modern, up to date regular PEOPLE. They do not want to be revered as royalty as some previous first families did. They are "with it" a concept hard for the stodgy righties to accept. Love Michlle's dancing, and her conversations. Jealousy abounds on the so-called "right"
DeleteHarvey Weinstein Arranged Michelle Obama's Best Picture Oscars Surprise
ReplyDeleteThe mogul and his daughter connected the Academy and the show's producers, who flew in secret to Washington, D.C., two weeks ago.
Michelle Obama presenting best picture from the White House? It was Harvey Weinstein's daughter's idea.
According to Academy president Hawk Koch, the plan came from Weinstein and his daughter, Lily. Koch and Oscar show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron loved the idea. And when it was pitched to the first lady, Zadan told The Hollywood Reporter that her response was, "Yes, I think it's a great idea. We watch movies all the time at the White House. Let's do it."
So, two weeks ago, Koch and the producers borrowed Disney's jet for a flight to D.C. They told their colleagues, though, that they had to go to New York for the day. "The planning of it was like Argo -- it was a C.I.A. mission, it was so complicated. We didn't even want anyone to know where we were going," Zadan said.
Once they arrived, they joined up with Weinstein and his daughter and then they all met with members of the first lady's staff to hammer out the details. The staff took them through the available White House rooms so they could select one for the broadcast. They were asked whether the first lady should appear alone or with a group, and the producers suggested having members of the military join in.
With the White House aboard, Zadan and Meron then approached Jack Nicholson, who had starred in their 2007 film The Bucket List. "We said, 'We have this proposition for you. How would you like to present best picture with Michelle Obama?'," Zadan said. Nicholson immediately signed on.
The Obama appearance was treated like a state secret, known to only a few of those working on the show. It was intentionally kept off the show's run sheets, so it wouldn't leak. On the Friday before the show, the Academy issued a release announcing that Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman would be serving as presenters. The announcement included a statement from Zadan and Meron that said, "Their participation in this year's Oscars completes a list of presenters and performers that truly represents that greath breadth and depth of acting talent in film today."
STORY: Michelle Obama Makes Surprise Oscars Appearance, Reads Best Picture
The person seen via satellite on the Oscars show handing her the envelope was Robert Moritz, the chairman of PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Nicholson, who had introduced the first lady from the Dolby Theatre stage in Hollywood, was holding a second envelope with the winner -- in case something went wrong and they lost the connection.
"I loved that we pulled it off," Koch told The Hollywood Reporter.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/michelle-obama-at-oscars-harvey-424146
But, of course, if Mittens were President it would be just peachy if Ann were to appear at the Oscars--or Cindy McCain, or Callista Gingrich, or Michelle Bachmann, or Michelle Malkin, or (**choke**cough**spit**) She Who Must Not Be Named...
ReplyDeleteBut admit, it would be hysterical to watch the latter choice fall off her 8-inch clodhoppers and fall flat on her snout in a drug-induced stupor. What would she wear? Biker leathers or a crop top and jeans with knee-high stilettos? A designer gown with platform sneakers and mismatched socks? A burlap sack with a feedbag for a hat (think "I Love Lucy")? A sequined straitjacket? The mind reels!
Our fabulous, elegant First Lady just.looked.DAMN.stunning!!!
I can imagine an alternate reality where Palin would be presenting (barely):
Delete"And now, for the best picture nominees... I just wanna to say I am soooo disappointed that Undefeated didn't make this. It's such a brilliant piece of work highlightin' my hardworkin', god-fearin'-ness, energy-experted-ness-ness, oh, whatchacallit? *giggle* Um, yes, the uh, nominees, which are of course, selected for their absolute timing and picture-ability for the great, god-loving American people that I see sittin' before me right now. Except for the brown ones *giggle* I'm kidding! I totally appreciate you Halle Berry *wink* Call me! What? Oh, right, the first nominee is.... Lincoln... Wow, really? Ya know, President Lincoln really wasn't portrayed accurately, how did this make best picture nominee? I mean, come on, folks. Wouldn't you rather see Ronald Reagan, the Fucking American Messiah on the silver screen?---" (then security plants a tranquilizer dart and the crowd cheers. All movies win in a tie and everyone in attendance gets free Christian Louboutins for sitting through the worst speech in existence.)
Marz, I love it! :)
DeleteAnd the following year, she'd be asked to "host" via Skype from her padded cell at the St. Wonky Eye Home for Taco Bell Addicts. The show would drag on for a record 14 hours. Free Ferraris for all!
Well, of course this would be upsetting. Jack Nicholson gets to speak with the FABULOUS Michelle Obama. Clint Eastwood talks to an empty chair.
ReplyDeleteCase closed.

DeleteWhat? Sarah 'Hollywood', Bristol 'I CAN'T DANCE', Willow 'I am a new Unwed Mom', and Todd 'Pimp Daddy Earns Stripes' were not invited to share their 'Expertise' on Hollywood Life? BWAHAHAHAHA the Wasillabillies were left out again.
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama using military personnel as props? Please hold while I enjoy a good chuckle....
ReplyDeleteThat is SO rich, coming from THEM.
Also-- I like that the President and First Lady are staying in the public eye and not just holing up in the White House like dutiful maids or stuffy stuck up We're-Better-Than-You's. I don't get what the big deal is with the President going to sporting events. I really don't. And frankly, Michelle Obama is considered a fashion icon as well as an activist. When I think of Michelle, I don't think, "Oh, yah, she's the First Lady." Although she IS the FLOTUS and does the title SO MUCH justice, she is so much more than that and has proven it time and again. Being FLOTUS seems to be sort of a bonus, really, lol. When I think of Laura Bush, however, I think, "Oh, yah, ex-FLOTUS. Dubya's wife." She never really got her own identity, whereas Michelle? If I had to choose between meeting her or her husband.... I'm not sure I could choose :/
If I remember correctly, aren't the First Ladies to have special projects they work on throughout the time their husbands serve as POTUS? So, Mrs. Obama supports the Arts and so does her husband!
DeleteIt was a pleasure to see her a part of the show last night and she was beautiful and well spoken as always.
He's the most approachable President yet. gop hates when President Obama says he's taking it to the people.
DeleteI have two words for these morons claiming that Michelle Obama used military troops as props:
Delete"MISSION ACCOMPLISHED"
Katie Annie Oakley- NICE! It took me a second to even remember that horrible event!
DeleteAnd yet when Mamie Eisenhower presented the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1954 to "From Here to Eternity," with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr locked in their steamy seaside clinch, Bob Hope kissed the hand of the then-FLOTUS and thanked her for supporting the greatest film industry in the world.
ReplyDeleteWhy is THAT vignette lost to history?
Um, because I made it up?
7:50 Thanks for the history lesson!!! Too bad the media journalist don't do their homework. Everyone get this information out there as much as you can today. Slam the hell out of the Republicans especially.
DeleteActually (blush), I DID make that up... next time I'll make my snark less realistic, less IOKIYAR.
DeleteThanks for your sweet response!
I thought it was a great idea. The First Family obviously loves movies so why not! And Michelle Obama looked the part perfectly. She also performed better than some of the very well paid actresses.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
I voted for Obama twice and still support him and Michelle. But I'm not comfortable with her presenting the best picture award. The Academy Awards have become little more than a increasingly gaudy circle-jerk featuring the same players every year. They just pass awards back and forth in some sort of weird orgy of self-worship. I stopped watching years ago.
ReplyDeleteIn a time when people are really having to scale back financially, it is disappointing to see Michelle Obama pandering politically to this uber-rich, self-important, mostly-white crowd.
I love seeing her on Sesame Street and other venues where she promotes her healthy living initiative (which conservatives have NO right to criticize). But this nonsense with the Academy? I just wish she'd not done it, and can understand the unease others feel with this. As far as the conservatives go, I just ignore their rants. They'd hate her no matter what she did.
Disagree 8:03. President and Mrs. Obama have always supported the Arts and the Oscars were viewed by people throughout the world. This was a perfect place for Mrs. Obama to support the film industry - especially w/three political movies up for the award she presented.
DeleteI'll wager the "Argo" folks were delighted to have her name their win! I know for sure that George Clooney was pleased - hell, perhaps he was the one that suggested she do it! That wouldn't surprise me either.
So, 8:03, you object to Michelle Obama voicing support for a billion-billion dollar a year business, one that employs so many people? That is . . . puzzling.
DeleteOf course the First Lady should support the contributions films make to the arts, to our lives and to our economy.
Yes, shameful that they are free people and get to do what the heck they want without checking with you, isn't it? How do we get to tell the elected leaders of our nation that they shouldn't have access to certain parts of this nation. Didn't Hollywood kind of grow out of a need for the common man to "escape" during hard financial times? So what good does it do to pretend it doesn't exist now? Some of you "liberals" are so hilarious with your "concerns" for the first black Pres and his wife...they can't look too happy, or rich, or opinionated...might offend someone, you know! Well I say who gives a crap, there are a lot of people in this country who roll out of bed EVERY DAY fully prepared to be offended at WHATEVER the Obamas have said or done the night before, so why deny them their one joy in life!
Delete803 stfu you are no better than the lying stinkin gop. Anyone who starts off as I voted blah blah blah is just a freakin liar.

I think it was totally fabulous and her speech was a tribute to the need for the arts....which Obama has supported throughout his presidency. What a great way to brag about our country and show inclusion, to celebrate what makes us so different and the same. If more people followed all the diverse activities at the white house, they would see how involved the Obamas have always been with the arts...music and movies. Michelle hosted a great event for Beast of the Southern Wild, the writer and cast.... which was amazing. Michelle represents our country to the world.....her youth, elegance, beauty are 2nd to none and I love it!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI am so proud to say that I am not and will never be part of their horrid party! Their membership has dropped considerably and they are viewed much like the U.S. Congress. I wouldn't be too proud of that!

ReplyDeleteMichelle looked great and I thought it was fabulous what she did.
ReplyDeleteWith that said---I think the Obama should take everyday in every way to think of ways to totally piss republicans off. I think its great when their heads explode like "The Gentlemen" in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode.
Also, the Obamas have always supported the fine and performing arts, so this was perfect. Whine baggers, whine . . . . .
All they know how to do is whine AD NAUSEUM. Four more LOOOOONG years for them, poor babies.

ReplyDeleteAngela: I agree, and think the best line in the whole comment section is"I think its great when their heads explode"
ReplyDeleteOn another example of Rep. dishonesty, I was watching Alex this morning. It seems a number of Rep Govs from the South, are opting in to the new medical coverage, saying they can't look at the people who would be hurt if, this was ignored and not taken advantage of.
Strange isn't it? Cold hearted snake people developing a warm hearts? That is a miracle!
Pres, And Michelle will never do a single thing the Reps will like,Not necessarily because of what they do, but because of their color.
I enjoyed the surprise of the first lady presenting. The republicans conveniently forget the Obamas support and believe in the arts.
ReplyDeleteIn contrast, a female republican promoted as future President, Palin, did not seem to value even elementary schol attendance nor pursuing high school academics much less the arts. I prefer a first family who values what is what I consider a general education inclusive of the arts
When I see things from the whitehouse present or past I can't erase images of the Palin family that leave me cringing that they might have been the VP family. (those horrible wigs, biker chick jackets, cut off jean shorts etc.)

"Conservative Media Ignore Laura Bush, Ronald Reagan Appearances
ReplyDeleteIn fact, former presidents and former First Lady Laura Bush have participated in Academy Awards ceremonies. In 2002, Bush appeared at the Oscars in a taped appearance. From the Chicago Tribune:
The documentary history montage was put together by director Penelope Spheeris, whose remarkable "Decline of Western Civilization" rock documentaries likely have never been even close to nominated.
And the show's marvelous "What do the movies mean to you?" opening segment was done by director Errol Morris, whose groundbreaking work, from "Thin Blue Line" through "Fast, Cheap and Out of Control," has also been criminally neglected.
It was bracing to see people from Laura Bush to Jerry Brown to Mikhail Gorbachev interviewed, and mind-bending to hear film titles such as Russ Meyer's "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill" and William Castle's "The Tingler" mentioned on usually sacrosanct Oscar airspace.
In 1981, President Reagan taped an appearance for the Oscars. From The New York Times:

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of awesome people, this is a great little article on Vice President Biden. What a spectacular group, the Bidens and the Obamas, each one of them standing tall in their own right, and accomplishments. We are SOOO lucky to have them representing us. Jill and Michelle with the amazing work they are doing with our military families and troops. Michelle with her healthy living and fitness program. Joe and Barack, each bringing such a great balance and support to each other. And all them supporting each other, as couples, and as a powerful foursome.
ReplyDeleteWelcome To Joe Biden's Second Term
The goofy, Teflon Veep becomes Obama's indispensable man. “No matter how hard we tried, they always were laughing with him.”
Republicans thought Joe Biden would be the weakest link in President Barack Obama's re-election campaign last year, but the gregarious Vice President proved Teflon then, and is now emerging as the Administration's unlikely, indispensable man.
Mitt Romney's campaign and allies made a target of "Uncle Joe" — casting him as a bumbling hapless counterpoint to the cool president, a man who couldn't remember which state he was in or the name of the president.
But by the time fiscal cliff talks rolled around late last year, a new Biden had emerged: One of the few people remaining in Washington who remembered how to do a bipartisan deal. Then, Republicans cheered Biden's return to the negotiating table to work out a last-ditch fiscal cliff agreement with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. And with another wave of departures from the Administration, and ties to the Hill as fragile as they've ever been, administration officials say Biden's role is only getting more central.
"He'll be more important in the second term," said one White House official. "He's proven to be invaluable to the president."
