Performing Arts Charter School decides to put on a play about the Bible. Decide to spice it up with gay characters. Christian heads exploding in 3..2..1

Courtesy of Item Live:

The head of a western Massachusetts charter school says a student production of a play that retells the biblical story of Genesis with gay characters will go on as planned despite objections from some who say it's offensive to Christians.

Scott Goldman of the Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Public Charter School said in a letter to parents Wednesday that the school has received email petitions and phone calls describing Paul Rudnick's 1998 comedy "The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told" as "blasphemous and hateful."

You know if a theater has to provide extra security because a play has upset "Christians," perhaps they ought to think about changing their name, or perhaps reading about the guy whose name they seem to identify themselves with.

Besides you remember Jesus right? Long haired guy dressed in robes, that hung around with a bunch of guys, and only let the women touch his feet? Somehow I think he would be okay with this play.

I was going to add you left out "and wash his feet with tears", but I thought it was too much like kicking them when they are down.

I still feel that christianity would be a far greater force for good if they had thrown out the old testament as part of their belief structure. You know, the section that highlights so well the viciousness of a murderous god who maniacally killed even little new born babies? The one that espouses genocide?

    Yeah. That one.

No kidding. I could never reconcile the Old Testament with the teachings of Jesus. It always made me think God was bipolar.

It must have to do with the evolution of man's ideas about what they feel they need in a deity. In a primitive society, fundamentalism brings order, encourages compliance through fear and coercion.

In a more advanced society, there is more freedom of thought with the ability to make one's own decisions with guidelines and influence from man's deity.

In a nutshell, I think it's because of man's changing his way of thinking, not 'God' changing His mind. IMO, it's one of those logical indicators that escape those whose faith is the only evidence they need

Oh my, me thinks some of you have never read the new testament. At least check out the book of Revelation; its got your 7 headed monsters and your Jesus coming after us on his white horse, and with a sword coming out of his mouth (Rev 19:15).

What does the evidence show in regards to Christians and the bible? Well first of all, most studies show conclusively that Christians lie. Second, studies have also shown that fewer than 10% of all Christians have read the bible in its entirety (and remember, some of this 10% may be lying about that, too).

The result is that you have a lot of people professing faith in something they actually know little or nothing about, save for "God did it." When it comes to the bible, Christians are world class cherry-pickers.

I note that religion can rarely be found to exist above an IQ of 140. That should tell you something.

We've learned a lot in the last 2000 years, but there are many who still use religion to fill in the gaps in their knowledge base. It reminds me of an old Chinese saying (is there any other kind?):

"Standing on a whale, fishing for minnows."

I live in liberal Mass. and I'm surprised that this happened here. The damn Christians just need to shut up! I'm sick of these people sticking their nose into everything.

  3. I think an exceptionally decent and intelligent wizard/holy man named Jesus existed. I think he would have enjoyed the play because of its depiction of tolerance.

I also think everyone should read the previous post, especially Gryphen’s comments. Those comments focus the vague anger many of us feel toward modern Christianity; the idea that a mumbled “I’m sorry, forgive me” in the dying breath will absolve all crimes. It can’t be that easy, and I don’t recall Jesus saying it. Asking for forgiveness is necessary, but expecting a last-minute ass-kiss to expunge a life of evil, no, I don’t buy it.

Let them flap their homophobic traps. That they can exercise their right to freedom of speech does not mean that anyone needs to listen.

It does, however, grind my gears that so many Xtians (certainly not all) feel that their religion regularly gives them some type of right to assert dominance over others. So hypocritical- crowing about it while hiding behind it.

"...feel that their religion regularly gives them some type of right to assert dominance over others. "

And there it is in a nutshell. Well said.

First, they aren't Christians; they are christo-nazis. Second, they should actually read the Bible and stop twisting it to fit their demented agenda. Christo-Nazis have no right to suppress other people's rights just to force their agenda on others.

It probably sounds weird, but I'm a Christian in that I follow the teaching of Christ. I'm not a Biblical Christian. Furthermore, a real Christian embraces others, and I don't just mean those in their tiny twisted circle of followers.

As long as you recognize that it isn't JUST christians like yourself (meaning new testament believers) who embrace others. (I always exclude Xtians! They embrace only their own fanaticism.)

Most secularists do, too, and many, MANY others as well. It is ignoring that, I believe, which is partly responsible for the Xtians and their COMPLETE ignorance of how Jesus would react and their desire to totally control the beliefs of others since their is the ONLY right path. Suuuure it is!

They do not WANT to discount the old testament because that is where they find the verification for their techniques. In the part that tells about the murders and destruction and slavery and countless other violent things ordered by god.

If it's good enough for god....

Sorry. Let me modify a little bit. I should have said "followers of Jesus" rather than "new testament believers". Sorry about that.

There are several wonderful Christians who I know who are kind in spirit and in their actions to others. We need to be careful not to fall into that trap of slowly simmering anger (or annoyances) regarding Christianity.

Religion can do a lot of good (and yes, destruction) but the people of any religion (and us) also need to be aware of the pitfalls of pointing finger at 'the other' because those slow simmering annoyances can grow to actions later on through physical or stabbing words which doesn't benefit anyone.

Rational, thoughtful arguments separate us from those who react based on emotion and have gotten us into a war in Iraq, not to mention countless other problems. Let's not tar all Christians, just the ones who talk with a double edged tongue.

I'm shocked! I'd be clutching my pearls if I had them on!
    GAYS in The performing arts!!!

    Snark off.

I'm glad they decided to keep the show as it is. The people with their panties in knots probably don't realize that their God could possibly create hateful, bigoted morons and the homosexuals they hate.

I chuckled a bit at your reference to Jesus hanging around men, but I know what you meant.
