The 2nd Amendment 2.0. If Georgia ordinance passes it would no longer be your 'right" to bear arms, instead it would be your "responsibility" to do so.

Courtesy of Mediaite:

Could not exercising the right to bear arms mean breaking the law?

In the north Georgia city of Nelson, that may be the case if a proposed ordinance, requiring every “head of household to own and maintain a firearm,” is passed. The city councilman, Duane Cronic, argued that relying on sheriffs isn’t sufficient.

“It’s a deterrent ordinance,” he said. “It tells the potential intruder you better think twice.” ]

The proposal is similar to a 1982 law passed in Kennesaw. Supporters of the ordinance cited the city’s location, straddling two counties, arguing that leads to slower response times from officials.

One police officer patrols Nelson, Georgia for eight hours during the day. That leaves 16 hours overnight when the city is basically unguarded. “When he’s not here we rely on county sheriffs–however it takes a while for them to get here,” said Nelson City Councilman Duane Cronic.

Do these people NOT understand the concept of "freedom?"

You would think that if the Teabaggers found the idea of laws that restrict the kinds of guns one can own, and that demand those gun owners not be criminals or mentally ill, invasive that they would certainly not want to support laws that would make it illegal not to own one either.

That is your Right Wing logic at work for ya there folks.

By the way let me tell you what results from demanding an increase in the number of weapons in your city. It does NOT reduce the number of burglaries, instead it increases them, because now that the thieves know that easily fenced handguns are in EVERY single home, they know that every break in results in a jackpot for them.

Unless these gun owners are supposed to sit in a chair on their front porch brandishing their weapons 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the thieves only have to bide their time. You have to go to work, and school, and out to eat sometime.

However a good dog, and an alarm system backed up by a reputable company, would make their house one of the least likely to fall prey to the criminal element. Of course it would also be wrong to legally mandate either of those, in case anybody was wondering.

  1. Having a firearm is not going to help if no one is home. A barking dog may or may not.

An alarm system like ADT or similar "reputable company" is only as effective as the response time of the police/fire. Unlike the TV commercials, the sound of the alarm does not automagically cause intruders to leave -- especially in areas where police response time is measured in half-hour increments. In addition, such alarm companies have the effect of increasing the response time of police forces when officers have to spend time responding to false alarms.

We had an ADT alarm system installed on our house after our barn got broken into. The guy installing it (not the salesman) said we already had the best deterrent available... two 100+ pound dogs with HUGE barks. He said w should have just bought an ADT sign on eBay and put it out front. After a year of paying ever increasing amounts for nothing, we terminated the contract, kept the sign, and still have big dogs. No one messes with our house. No one.

It is also a tax, something else teabaggers are purported to dislike, 'cause someone will have to pay for those guns.

    Good grief.. This is insane.

We all know folks who shouldn't be trusted with a kitchen knive let alone a loaded gun.

Besides, what about that whole small government thing these folk also talk about? How can they support the idea of government telling us that we have to have a gun? What about people who care barely afford food let alone a gun and ammo. What about heads of households who have arthritic hands, the shakes, or are on medications that advise against driving?

Good freaking grief, the people making this proposal cannot think well enough to own a gun themselves.

Instead of constantly bagging on conservative gun patriots, Gryphen, if that's your real name, which I seriously doubt, how about recognizing all the great work gun nuts do for America?

For example, as you know, many localities are struggling with budget shortfalls and it can even affect animal shelters that care for lost or stray dogs and cats. Well, in some areas, the gun nuts are proudly stepping in and forming "Puppy Patrols", complete with cute "Puppy Patrol" logo t-shirts made by a young Etsy crafterian. And these camo-wearing anti-gummint activists will load up their AKs, their ARs, their pump actions, their over-unders and their pick-me-up trucks and travel their counties executing stray animals FOR FREE at no cost to other less-militaristic but no less angry taxpayers.

And the good news is that they arent just taking out stray cats and dogs. If it can be shot from a moving pick-up truck, these guys will do the job: Squirrels, rabbits, ducks, geese, turkey, pigeons, crows, finches, robins, possum, raccoons, coyotes, deer, pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, basically anything that moves is fair game.

So, the next time you see the bullet-riddled carcass of a wild or not-so-wild animal rotting by the side of the road or in your driveway, remember, you have the Puppy Patrol and the NRA to thank!

      Hey Beldar!!

Good one. I think it's funny when commenters don't get your snark...note reply @ 5:01 LOL!!

I can't believe the disrespect that President Obama has received. The level of racism that has bubbled to the surface since he took office is terrifying. I can only hope that this is some kind of last gasp for the rich white guys.

      By the way...
      Lazy?? NOT!!!

President Obama in his first four years has taken 131 days, dividing his time between Hawaii, Martha’s Vineyard and, of course, Camp David, the official get away of U.S. presidents. At this rate, he could hit 262 days by the end of his eighth year, about average for modern presidents.
He certainly is not the king of vacation days. That honor falls to President George W. Bush, who racked up 1,020 vacation days in his eight years in office, including one five-week vacation, the most of any president in 36 years. Not to say he wasn’t on the job when he was at his Crawford, Texas ranch, but he was away from the White House.
And if we compare days off in the first year alone, President Bush still nabs the honor with 69 vacation days, President Obama with 26 and President Clinton with 19.

Let's see. Smaller government in Teathuglican terms is...

Mandated gun ownership. Forcing people to pay for something they may not be able to afford. Or possibly forcing local governments to pay for a service that is unnecessary.

Transvaginal ultrasounds. Same thing. Creating an unnecessary service that has to be paid for by citizens or government.

Voucher programs. Where public school funding is funneled into religious schools. Makes me sick to think my tax dollars could be high jacked this way.

What else?? Oh defunding clinics that MAY provide abortion services. Real smart. Your post about Texas explains the stooopid there.

    BUT NOOOOO!!!!

Mandated health care which would REDUCE the cost to citizens and government is BAD.

Or Headstart and preschool which is proven to save money in the long term

Medicare, S.S. and Medicaid. Any kind of investment that actually HELPS people and therefor our NATION be the best that it can be is too much government??

I'm know there are many more examples and a better way to express them but you get my point.

  12. Proposals for Dealing with Violators Refusing to Exercise their Gun Owning and Carrying Freedom

    Option A
Exercising God-given rights to Freeom of Assembly, the town residents will all meet together at the town square and march (attire: standard issue casual kkk attire with hood) together with torches and pitchforks in protest, another God-given Freedom. The ladies (attire: Ladies KKK Aux Jr League casual lynch/mob outfits; hoods optional) will bang on pots and pans with wooden or metal spoons (see signup list at the church along with specs on approved sizes of spoons and pots/pans so we can have a good variety of noise-makers). Town children are required to exercise their God-given Freedom to yell and scream and make noise. After all, these little tea baggies will be family-size Tea Baggers one day, so they need practice hollerin' and carryin' on. Kids (under 12, who aren't required to pack arms yet) are required to exercise their Freedom to Stand on the Lawn of any unMercun terrorist family'and flip the bird at homeowner when confronted. If one of terrorist family gets too loud or if kid standing on lawn feels threatened or nervous, kid on lawn is required to exercise his Freedom to Not Be Scared and his God-given Freedom to Stand On Lawn (under-12 version of Stand Yer Ground by borrowing an AK15 and up to 3 (three) barrel clips of up to 150 rounds each to shoot up the terrorists and their residence. If terrorist residents refuse to evacuate inhabitance, or if terrorists evacuate but sttill refuse to have guns, the good people of the town shall be required to exercise their Freedom to destroy property of terrorists and "torch it to the ground"? Fish Fry dinner following at church reception hall. Come as you are. RSVP

    Option B
The town council appoints a 3 man hit squad to go "take out" the terrorist sleeper cell family that must be up to something since they refuse to shoot and kill people. Hit squad will report successful 'neutralization of threat' at prayer meeting at the church on Wednesday evening. Sandwiches and soup afterwards. See sign-up list so we'll know what you're bringing.

    Option C
The terrorist family with no guns must pay Freedom Fee (Town judge says its not a tax, so it ain't one), for their neighbors to come over and shoot someone for them any other person, stray animal, neighbor's cat or whatnot, that the terrorist family would've been capable of shooting had they just complied with the city's requirement to accept their God-given 2nd Amendment Freedom to bear arms and shoot people if they think they need to. See, this proves that George W Bush, Darth Vader Cheney and Rummie were all telling the truth about the terrorists hating all our American Freedoms.

    Option D
The town folk will agree to exercise their 1st Amend Freedom to Free Speech, and all agree not to talk to any member of the terrorist family, unless it is to collect money for providing shooting services the terrorist family failed to exercise their freedom (proving they're unMercun terrorists.) As part 2 of Option D (1sr Amendment freedoms), the town newspaper should exercise Freedom of Press by printing slanderous articles about the family all being GLBT or worse, Libruls. so the town folk would all know that the terrorists are really not real Mercuns so they don't have no rights anyway. Town paper wil print editorial subfrayed by neighbors claiming that each have multiple sources that the terrorist family are all part of a pedophile gang, each of whom also rapes adults on a convenience basis on weekdays, and practice beastiality on weekends as they tend to their farm animals. Please note: Editorials would be printed with pseudonyms for the protection of the reputations of the anonymous writers, of course, so no one would be embarrassed about reporting all of the rumors that they heard secondhand at church.

Why doesn't the town hire two more police persons? They could each work an 8-hour shift. Seems a lot more sensible to me that arming every household, although, considering where this town is, most households are probably arsenals already.

On The Bus To Albany With New York’s Gun Guys

...Rios did not grow up around guns. In fact, he’d never fired one before a day in 2000 or 2001 when a friend of his, who was a sniper in the Army, introduced him to shooting. The two of them went out to a firing range on the east end of Long Island with a bolt-action rifle.

“When I got to fire that thing, the thing that really caught me off guard was how it smacked me in the face, because of the power behind it,” Rios said. “And then after that, when I was able to actually put shots on a paper target … it was a great feeling. I really loved it.”

Guns became a big part of Rios’ life. He feels strongly enough about them that, last Thursday, he got up well before dawn on a cold, damp day, and met up with several dozen other gun owners and gun rights advocates in a parking lot in Melville, N.Y. Together, they boarded a chartered bus for the roughly four-hour drive up to Albany, N.Y., where there was a big rally scheduled to protest the SAFE Act, the package of strict new gun regulations that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) signed in response to the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn.

    Speaking of other GOP idiocy...

The Mind Boggling Idiocy of Defunding Family Planning Will Cost Texas Taxpayers $273 Million

Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s “Initiatives to Protect Life” (aka; wars on abortion) aren’t going so well. Perry’s alleged ideals aren’t necessarily firmly rooted in reality, and so he announced, “The ideal world is a world without abortion. Until then, however, we will continue to pass laws to ensure abortions are as rare as possible under existing law.”

The only problem is that Perry and his Republican legislature don’t seem to understand what actually prevents abortions, and thus they set about killing the very services that actually reduce abortions. That fail was then projected to cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars via what Republicans call big government dependency.

Texas Republicans were shocked to learn that their 2011 legislative efforts to defund family planning clinics by 2/3 will result in more unplanned pregnancies and are projected to cost the taxpayers $273 million for low-income births. Who would have guessed that taking away access to birth control would increase unplanned pregnancies? HUH. This is hard.

More Gun Laws = Fewer Gun Deaths

...The Journal of the American Medical Association this week released a four year study [2007-2010] of both gun regulations in all fifty states and a statistical analysis of gun violence data from those same states during that same time period. The study BOTH takes into account the total gun violence [murder, injury, suicide] AND gun violence confined to murder and gun injuries.

The JAMA study, through research from Boston Children’s Hospital drew the following conclusion:

“A higher number of firearm laws in a state are associated with a lower rate of firearm fatalities in the state, overall and for suicides and homicides individually.”
