Poll numbers plunge for Senators who voted against background checks.

Courtesy of Public Policy Polling:

New PPP polls in Alaska, Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio find serious backlash against the 5 Senators who voted against background checks in those states. Each of them has seen their approval numbers decline, and voters say they're less likely to support them the next time they're up for reelection. That's no surprise given that we continue to find overwhelming, bipartisan support for background checks in these states.

The article then lists all of the above states and impact on each Senator's poll numbers from that background check vote. However I would like to focus on Alaska.

When we polled Alaska in February Lisa Murkowski was one of the most popular Senators in the country with a 54% approval rating and only 33% of voters disapproving of her. She's seen a precipitous decline in the wake of her background checks vote though. Her approval is down a net 16 points from that +21 standing to +5 with 46% of voters approving and 41% now disapproving of her. Murkowski has lost most of her appeal to Democrats in the wake of her vote, with her numbers with them going from 59/25 to 44/44. And the vote hasn't increased her credibility with Republican either- she was at 51/38 with them in February and she's at 50/39 now.

Mark Begich is down following his no vote as well. He was at 49/39 in February and now he's at 41/37. His popularity has declined with Democrats (from 76/17 to 59/24) and with independents (from 54/32 to 43/35), and there has been no corresponding improvement with Republicans. He had a 24% approval rating with them two months ago and he has a 24% approval rating with them now.

60% of Alaska voters support background checks to just 35% opposed, including a 62/33 spread with independents. 39% of voters say they're less likely to vote for each of Begich and Murkowski in their next elections based on this vote, while only 22% and 26% say they're more likely to vote for Begich and Murkowski respectively because of this.

I have already expressed my deep disappointment with Mark Begich over his vote, but until now I had not considered how that vote might affect Murkowski, who I have long felt was one of the safest Senators in the country.

To be honest I had thought that her vote in deeply red, gun loving Alaska would have relatively little impact.

It is interesting to find that I was wrong about that, and that, if this poll is correct, the country's shift on guns has been MUCH more profound than even I had once believed.

In fact this vote may be the one thing that puts Murkowski's inevitable reelection in jeopardy.

P.S. In the interest of full disclosure I must confess that I was actually part of this poll, and definitely one that voiced my outrage at both Mark and Lisa's vote.

i sent e-mails to both of them saying i would never vote for them again. the democratic party needs to have candidates that actually believe in democratic ideals and causes.

12:53 I did the same thing!!! Especially cannot stand Murkowski, but leaned more toward Mark - since his being Mayor of Anchorage.

    2. We need to change this debate from "Gun Control" to "Weapons of War".

An assault rifle, by any definition (High Capacity Magazine especially) IS a "Weapon of War".

Not a hand gun, not a rifle, not a shotgun, not weapons that soldiers/Military wouldn't take into war. Those guns are hunting/self-defense weapons. Rarely identified as weapons of choice for mass murders.

THIS IS ABOUT WEAPONS OF WAR!

End access to those Weapons of War,(like it used to be in the USA in 1993) and you end mass murder...or depending on your perspective, war atrocities.

you know, a well armed soldier walking into a village of unarmed civilians called "Sandy Hook Elementary" and opening fire.

It seems to be the knee jerk thinking reaction of Blue Dog Dems like Begich who are fighting to survive in a red state, that the Independent voters lean Republican. Guess what Marky, that isn't very true. Independents are Independents for a reason, and isn't because they are Republican Light. Mark is learning a lesson right now that going against his base and batting with the other side is not going to give him a reciprocal upswing in Republican votes. But it just might be too late a lesson learned.

So Senator Begich voted against back round checks and the result was a lower approval rating among his base and independents and no change among Republicans. Harry Truman was right, to paraphrase people will vote for a real Republican rather than a pretend Republican.

Murkowski plays around w/the voters in Alaska! She publicly says one thing and votes the opposite. I've never voted for her and never will!

Republicans are going to be in trouble in the U.S. Congress and it's about time. They have done nothing more than obstruct and try to make President Obama's job more difficult than it need be. He's doing well w/the majority of Americans in spite of their nastiness in D.C. You'd think they'd learn!!! Can hardly wait to see many of them voted out of office in their next reelection cycles!

I think a good strategy would be to bring this up for a vote again right before the election in 2014. I share your hope for them being voted out. A shellacking, if you will, would be most appropriate!

I wish that PPP had called me, I'd have given them an earful!

I'm sending in my donation to the Democratic Party only because the State Dems need our help. I'm putting a sticky note on the check saying that under no circumstances should my money be used for Begich's campaign.

    OT but wow, just wow:

SarahPac apparently peddled photos of herself with her "statue of liberty big gulp pose" to the faithful and they purchased them, for actual monies. Two of the faithful rec'd their "Big Gulp Sarah of Liberty Glossy 8x10's" today. Now really, just really, can it get any more desperate than selling photos of yourself, a former VP candidate, holding a plastic cup full of corn syrup and posing as the symbol of hope and freedom for America?

How Jeff Flake Became the Most Unpopular Senator in America

It wasn't easy dethroning Mitch McConnell as America's least favorite Senator, but Jeff Flake has done that in just three short months, a new poll out Monday reveals — and his fall from rising-star grace is not quite the head-scratcher you might think. In November, Flake won his Arizona Senate seat by almost 5 percentage points, but it was a lot closer than "the double-digit lead he held earlier in the year," ABC News reported at the time. Flake, a popular six-time Congressman who won previous elections with as much as 74 percent of the vote, strode into the seat of former Minority Whip Jon Kyl as a face of turnaround for the state and the Republican party. But, oh, how the mighty can fall in a time of guns, immigration, and constant polling.

I am an Alaskan and both Murkowski and Begich would have committed political suicide to go along with that vote. Despite what I believe about gun control most Alaskans are devoted to their guns and the ability to own them no questions required. The Dems I know are not making much of this poll. Most Dems in Alaska will vote for Mark.

    Oh yes, we're outraged...

And meanwhile, a few weeks ago, our government gutted the STOCK act.

Last year, an ELECTION YEAR, the STOCK ACT was passed, disallowing any Senators, Members of the House of Representatives, the President, the Vice-President or anyone who works for any of them to profit from insider-trading knowledge.

When it was time to fix the economy our government dithered for nine months and ended up going over the fiscal cliff and instituting the sequester...

But boy, when it was time to protect their own financial interests - their right to profit on knowledge that no-one else has... they sure as hell didn't waste any time.

S.716 was introduced in the Senate by Harry Reid (D-shameless) and was unanimously passed with no debate. Two days later it passed the House unanimously and with zero debate and two days after that President Obama signed it into law.

    Four days.

Last year, before the election, there was a grand puffing chests and a heroic vote to stop the looting by elected officials...

And now they quietly gut the very law they were so proud of less than a year ago.

They were proud because it WAS the right thing to do.

They quietly - and unanimously - slipped it back in (double entendre intended) while our attention was otherwise occupied.

Not ONE of them stood up and said "this is wrong!"

    Fuckers.

ALL of them, Barack Obama included.

Any Senator or Congressman who doesn't at the very least try to do something on gun control should be labeled as "Pro Murder". The politics of fear work for Republicans, it's time Democrats grew a pair.
