The Army commander of a remote Alaskan base is under investigation for sexual misconduct, after allegedly allowing officers to have affairs and for permitting scantily clad women soldiers to pose for a calendar.
Soldiers at the anti-ballistic missile base claimed Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Miley had created a 'toxic environment' by turning a blind eye to cases of sexual misconduct.
It was claimed that women soldiers at Fort Greely were also being allowed to trade sexual favors for favorable treatment from officers.
Even if sexual misconduct is consensual, the Army forbids commanders to have relationships with their subordinates.
Marco Morales, spokesman for the Space and Missile Defense Command, confirmed the commander was under investigation in an email obtained by Bloomberg.
Incidents of inappropriate sexual relations between officers and soldiers had increased because no disciplinary action was being taken, according to three sources, who spoke to the news agency on the condition of anonymity.
An anonymous complaint was made against Lieutenant Colonel Miley earlier in the year, after he promoted a racy calender featuring his wife Tracey as the August shot, alongside women from the base.
An alleged inappropriate relationship had formed between the soldier who took the photos and one of the soldiers who posed in it.
At first blush this may seem to be less egregious than some of the sexual assaults reported earlier, as it appears that some of the sexual activity was with consent. But if the environment on the base was one in which female military members were sexualized and treated differently depending on their desirability of participation in sexual activities it would be tantamount to them being forced to prostitute themselves in order to gain favor or move forward with their career.
I am by no means a prude, and have often mocked the military for its puritanical views on sex and marriage, but this is not about sex, this is about power. And THAT makes it wrong.
Don't tell me this was Sarah's pal. Did Track have anything to do with this?

The calender is but a symptom of a much larger problem within the AKARNG. With very little to no outside oversight of the AKARNG and the DMVA/DHS, it's no wonder a story such as this has come out.

DeleteThis story is about coercion, cover ups and CYA, there were and still are rogue elements in the AKARNG. There's a reason that the complaint was made anonymously, to the highest ranking civilian of the Army, that's because those people who brought these concerns to light didn't have faith in their leadership that this situation would be addressed properly, without retribution.

A former firefighter who told his victims he was a Playboy magazine photographer was sentenced to 300 days in jail Friday for duping 10 women into nude photo sessions in which he touched them inappropriately. Superior Court Judge Gregory Motyka said Gary Roath crafted a plan of deceit to lure the young women, most of them dancers, into a Spenard hotel room in late May.
Lisa Lawendowski , a Sands North dancer and one of Roath's victims, said the penalties are not enough. Williams also would have liked to have seen a few years added on to Roath's sentence.
Lawendowski said customers at the topless club have made fun of her and asked how she could have been lured into Roath's scheme.
"It's humiliating," she said. "It just makes you feel like an idiot."

Alaska National Guard unit being investigated for sexual misconduct

WASHINGTON -- Current and former members of the Alaska National Guard say there's serious sexual misconduct within the ranks and an investigation of recruiters accused of rape is now under way.
Lt. Col. Jane Wawersik, a former Anchorage police officer, is investigating allegations of sexual assault and other offenses, such as inappropriate relationships with new recruits, by members of the Alaska Army Guard's recruiting and retention unit headquartered at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Members of the guard said other guardsmen are also under investigation.
Sgt. Rosa Ralls, a currently serving member of the Alaska National Guard who reported being raped in 2009 by a former member of the military, said the sexual assault problem is severe.
"It's horrible, it really is," she said.
Lt. Col. Rick Koch, the state command chaplain for the Alaska National Guard, and Lt. Col. Ted McGovern, another guard chaplain, questioned why it's taken so long for action.
The two chaplains said sexual assault victims have been coming to them for years, and that the majority were assaulted by fellow guard members. The chaplains said victims don't trust their commanders to help because of a history of mishandled complaints in which victims felt that nothing was being done.
"There were lots of bread crumbs on the trail that were never taken seriously. It was almost shocking to think that somebody wouldn't try to bore down deeper than they did," Koch said.
Maj. Gen. Tom Katkus, who has led the Alaska National Guard since 2009 as the adjutant general, confirmed, "we do have some investigations going on." He said he could not discuss the details.
