Courageous Oklahoma Atheist has over $50,000 raised for her by grateful fellow atheists.

Courtesy of HuffPo:

After a vicious tornado ripped through her Moore, Okla. home on Tuesday, Rebecca Vitsmun was lucky to be alive. After graciously handling an awkward moment while discussing the aftermath on national television, more good fortune is headed her way.

In a Tuesday interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Vitsmun was asked if she was thanking "the Lord" for deciding to escape home with her 19-month-old son. She hesitated for a moment, before telling Blitzer that she was actually an atheist.

"You are. All right. But you made the right call," Blitzer said, prompting Vitsmun to add: "We are here, and I don't blame anyone for thanking the Lord."

An Indiegogo community called Atheists Unite has responded resoundingly in support of Vitsmun's poise. Over just a few hours from late Thursday into early Friday, 250-plus funders had raised more than $7,000 for her. According to the page, a fundraising goal of $50,000 in assistance has been set. (Since HuffPo posted this article the amount raised has gone up dramatically and they have now met their $50,000 goal and then some!)

"It's important that our community shows that we have your back when you come out publicly as an atheist," the campaign page wrote. "Let's show the world that you dont need to believe in a god to have human compassion nor does all charity fall under the banner of religion. Let's get this courageous woman and her family back in their own home."

I have to say that as an atheist myself I was REALLY impressed with Ms. Vitsmum's ability to stay true to her beliefs (Or lack of beliefs if you prefer) while being questioned on national television.

Just like lowering our heads during unexpected requests for prayer, it is sometimes just easier to play along rather than to stand out, but this brave young mother seemed to have no problem. And for that she has earned the respect and admiration of many people, both religious, and nonreligious.

P.S. By the way the most humorous response from the religious right to this rather embarrassing incident for CNN was from Glenn Beck, who seems to believe that it was the result of sabotage from the "forces of spiritual darkness:"

“I think he was fed some information about the guest he had on beforehand — that’s what producers do — given some questions that he should ask, etc., etc.,” Beck explained. “Some producer, who is sympathetic to the atheist plight or just doesn’t like Christians or whatever it is, thought it was important to point out that, in the middle of the heartland in American where most people are God fearing, there are atheists there too.”

“It’s important because it informs others what they are being taught about atheists from atheism and the bully pulpit and other sources of bias that is not a correct reflection of reality in plain view,” he continued. “We are not fighting against flesh and bone, we are fighting the forces of spiritual darkness. And it doesn’t matter what people’s intent are, but I will tell you that, that was there for a reason.”

Oh yeah, if there is an atheist showing up on national television in the wake of a catastrophe  like that they MUST be a plant. After all in the face of such devastation wouldn't that frighten ANYBODY into clinging to superstition and their faith in a bronze age god?

Actually, not so much.

Good news that more people are coming out as atheists. Off topic but here is Paylin's new book.

I believe that America is fast becoming less and less christian as time moves along. Too many folks are shoving religion down throats - i.e. Republicans who are also fading in the polls!

Plus, the aging are dying off and the younger folks are coming up w/o religion...I know many families like that today to include mine.

Don't get too excited those of you that might be religious reading this blog and commentary. These family members I'm talking about are good citizens, good family members, hard working, etc. They/we just don't believe in your god, heaven or hell.

This is going to be interesting to watch!

    2. Anyone wanna bet the book is 208 pages of anecdotes from Gramma Sally, polishing the coprolite that is her extended family celebrating Christmas?

There's so much Heath/Palin BS in that interview (fair warning, it's at BigGovt aka Breitbartland) that it stinks like their outhouse. But the Palinbots loved it, if the Tweets and shares are any indication.

      Crazy pricing on the book.

This title will be released on October 29, 2013. 208 pages

Glenn Beck is pathetically insane. I can't even stand to look at him or hear his voice.

Sorry, Gryphen. I do NOT prefer. I firmly BELIEVE there is no god. It is not that I DON'T believe in god. There is a major difference between the two.

I say that because if you say you don't believe in god then you fall right into their little game of telling people that atheists don't believe in anything.

And Glenn Beck is an ignorant piece of shit who will say ANYTHING to contradict ANYBODY who makes points HE doesn't like!

I just watched the spewing Beck did about this, using your link.

I must say that not only was that THE most ignorant thing I have heard ANYONE say about atheism, but also the most nonsensical. Even SP can say things more clearly than that!

    And that's going some!

    What an idiot.

HEY STUPID! Go back to building your self supporting enclave and leave the rest of us alone. Just don't complain when Logan makes his Run away from it!

Glenn Beck is FUCKING IDIOT ASSHOLE BIGOTED CHRISTIAN SUPREMACIST, and I don't care who doesn't like it, but it's a fact.

The "war on Xmas" folks and the "war on Christians" meme is the biggest crock of shite ever invented by a scurrilous breed of narcissistic religious shills.

With 3 churches on every street corner, and billions of dollars in graft, corruption, and pandering asshole lobbyists controlling Federal and State government to the benefit of the Christians, WHO IN HELL ARE THEY KIDDING when the claim they are PERSECUTED?

Forcing women into jail for abortions, miscarriages, and spiritual slavery by virtue of their biblical bullshit arcane scriptural idiocy and state laws, is just one small part of their master plan.

Beck, ,Charles Dobson, Tony Perkins, the Pope, and the entire lot of ass kissing Philistine zealots can get their koesters over to Iran if they want a dog damn theocracy.

Kudos to the athiests, agnostics, deists, or whoever else doesn't kowtow to the travesty of religion in the USA, and a big WELL DONE to the athiests of the world for helping this woman and her family.

The next time some prejudiced fool insists that atheists have their own "religion" tell them this:

ATHIESM is a religion like OFF is a TV channel

They're at over 66 grand. What a fun way to raise money for a good cause. The names of the prizes per donation amount is sheer genius. I ordered a "Get out of hell free" card.

"You are alright, but you made the right choice" said Wolfie. Really? Was that because she's an Atheist or because she's female? Screw You, Wolfie and CNN.

Glen Beck, what can I say? Of course she's a plant, a crisis actor, a ruse...

Can you imagine an atheist raising funds on television in much the same way televangelists do? Heads would explode and blood would be flowing in the streets!

I've always been amazed at these Christians who proclaim loudly that a "miracle" saved them from some horrible wrath of nature and it's always God that spared them. Well, wasn't it God that started the wrath of nature in the first place?

  14. There is this horrible "Christian" fundie blogger by the name of Kelly Crawford lost her home to a tornado two years ago. A bunch of her leg humper fans got together to raise funds so Kelly's family could get back on their feet. Not only did the Crawfords get a brand new house and furniture, they also got expensive sewing machines, art supplies, and other non-essentials. Kelly later wrote a blog post thanking God for the tornado because she and her family got so much new stuff. The tornado was a blessing. The post was so damn boastful and insensitive.

Two years later, and you would think Kelly would ask for prayers for the victims of the tornado in Moore. You think she would pay her good fortune forward to help these people. You think she's inspire her leg humper fans to donate to the Red Cross. But nope, she's been totally silent. She just doesn't give a shit about anyone outside her little realm.

But I'm thrilled so many people are helping Ms. Vitsmun and her family.
