Courtesy of ABC News:
NRA First Vice President James Porter, who will take over the top job Monday, issued a full-throated challenge in the opening hours to President Barack Obama after the NRA's major victory on gun control and a call to dig in for a long fight that will stretch into the 2014 elections.
More than 70,000 NRA members are expected to attend the three-day convention amid the backdrop of the defeat of a major gun control bill in the U.S. Senate that was introduced after December's mass shooting at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
Porter's remarks came in a short speech to about 300 people at a grass-roots organizing meeting and set the tone for a "Stand and Fight"-themed convention that is part gun trade show, political rally and strategy meeting.
"This is not a battle about gun rights," Porter said, calling it "a culture war."
"(You) here in this room are the fighters for freedom. We are the protectors," said Porter, whose father was NRA president from 1959-1960.
Let me get this straight, these idiots think they are "fighters for freedom" in the middle of a "culture war?"
What "culture" are they "fighting" for?
Could it be the culture that allows a room full of kindergarteners to be gunned down in their elementary school with an assault rifle?
Or perhaps a culture that allows a man to purchase an Uzi, without background checks, in the parking lot of a Babies-R-Us?
Or perhaps a culture that allows a five year old boy to kill his two year old sister with a gun made specifically for him to handle more efficiently?
Or perhaps one that makes sure that a boy who attempts to rape his one mother can then riddle her body with bullets from his 22 caliber?
Is that it? Is that the "culture" they are trying to protect?
And by the way it is not lost on me that the NRA has usurped evangelical talking points in order to make their case. There is no more fertile ground to plant your seeds than that tilled by a lifetime of exposure to religion.
And Christians are tailor made for those who want to convince a constituency that they are being persecuted. I would suggest that if somebody were to walk around this NRA meeting and ask each person their religious affiliation, almost ALL of them would self identify as Christians. Most likely Fundamentalist Christians.
And the hypocrisy of worshiping a man of immense peace and acceptance while arguing for access to weapons designed for murder would be completely lost on them.
Gee I wonder how many more bodies will pile up while these "patriots" fight for their freedoms? Personally I think the death toll is too fucking high already!

From TEXAS even!
Excellent rant!
ReplyDeleteYou won't be surprised to learn that Porter attended Baptist-related Cumberland School of Law, Samford University in Alabama.
"We nurture persons—for God, for learning, forever.
"The mission of Samford University is to nurture persons in their development of intellect, creativity, faith and personhood. As a Christian university, the community fosters academic, career and ethical competency while encouraging social and civic responsibility, and service to others."

Another baby pays the price for fucking idiots and irresponsible adults. When will this stop????? This is just so wrong and criminally negligent. I hope she goes to prison for a long, long time. But then 35 year old GRANDMOTHER for god's sake...do the math on that one!
ReplyDeleteArizona 3-year-old fatally shoots himself in face with meth grandma’s gun
...Court documents indicated that Spry had placed her 9mm handgun in a backpack and left it on top of a dryer while helping her daughter pack for a move. She had seen her grandson come into the room where the backpack was located, but she continued packing. About five minutes later, she heard a gunshot.
The court records also claimed that a methamphetamine pipe was found in the same backpack as the gun, and that she had admitted to using the drug the evening before the shooting occurred.

ReplyDeleteFlorida cop fired for eighth time after leaving police AR-15 with friend
...The department told arbitrator Jeanne Wood that Sgt. German Bosque should be terminated because he had left a city-owned, 30-round assault rifle like the one used to slaughter 20 elementary school children last year in Connecticut in the hands of his then-girlfriend’s father.
Bosque’s attorney, however, argued that the rifle was in good hands with the girlfriend’s father, who Bosque called “Daddy,” because he was a licensed security guard.
“Anyone can legally purchase this weapon,” union attorney Andrew Axelrad said on Bosque’s behalf.
“Not just anyone can purchase one from the Opa-locka police department,” city attorney Joe Geller shot back.
According to WFOR, Bosque has been fired eight times by three police departments in Florida, including six firings from his job at Opa-locka. WFOR noted that Bosque was the “most disciplined, fined, fired, arrested police officer in the state.”
Over the years, he has faced allegations of busting the skull of a suspect, beating juveniles, having drugs in a patrol car, stealing from suspects, falsifying reports, conducting an unauthorized car chased where four people were killed and “calling in sick…from Cancun.”

Why hasn't he spent time in prison? He certainly should never be a member of any public safety organization and he should not be allowed to become a private security guard either. This man is dangerous.

Many defenses of the Second Amendment are based on "god-given" rights. Yet another reason religion should be kept as far away from politics as possible.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny that they never mention "Thou shalt not kill" when talking about "God given" anything?

Palin fans waiting in line at today's NRA meeting. Hint: they are all old, white, fat f*cks.

This is a new low - when you think she couldn't get lower - not many groups left willing to pay her.
DeleteSantorum: NRA Are ‘Warriors’ Defending Second Amendment That Comes ‘From God’
ReplyDeleteRick Santorum today delivered a sixteen-minute speech at the first day of the NRA‘s meeting in Houston, telling an estimated 70,000 members who attended that the NRA are “warriors” and the Second Amendment comes “from God.” Santorum attacked President Barack Obama, gun control activists, the French, Europe, Obamacare, the decline of religious institutions in America and Europe, to name a few targets.

That someone who is supposedly a Christian would support such a group as the NRA is a very bad reflection on religion, reality and the US. Another one who is running out of people to pay for his lifestyle and all those children.
DeleteSo Santorum worships guns eh? Christ will be not be happy to hear that and his daddy might have to get 'old Testament' on his bee-hind, ya know.
DeleteSeriously, these strange, delusional, paranoid people absolutely worship their guns like true 'false gods' the Bible they supposedly honor warned them against.
Boggles the mind.

God, Guns And Gays: The Majority Of Americans vs. The GOP
ReplyDeleteThe majority of Americans support the right of same-sex couples to marry. The majority of Americans support an inclusive ENDA. The majority of Americans support a women’s right to choose. The majority of Americans support common sense gun control, including expanded background checks. The majority of Americans support immigration reform, including a path to citizenship. The majority of Americans support legalizing marijuana. The majority of Americans support comprehensive sex education.
The majority of Republicans do not.

They need to just go.
DeleteUnfortunately, they are trying their damnedest to rig the system so they can't lose. If you can't win honestly, then cheat.
Meth-addicted grandmother charged after 3-year-old fatally shoots himself in the face with her gun
ReplyDeleteOnline pictures which she had posted, or had on her, were of her gun with the words below it, ‘My best friend.’

Gun fondlers plan a massive march on D.C., with loaded rifles illegally slung over their shoulders
ReplyDeleteLibertarian activist and radio host, Adam Kokesh, launched a Facebook page in the hopes of getting 1,000 people to march on Washington on the 4th of July while armed with loaded rifles, even though the district where they plant to march, openly carrying weapons is generally prohibited. The group plans to meet on the Virginia side of the Potomac where gun fondlers enjoy lax gun laws, then march across the bridge where the laws are more strict. The page reads, “This will be a nonviolent event, unless the government chooses to make it violent.”

Take away their guns and they become more terrified than the young ones those guns have killed.
DeleteThey really should rethink that. DC has so many layers of serious law enforcement. And I don't think all the tourists in the area, as well as the locals, will cotton to this sort of militant, aggressive display. They'll just be advertising why we need more gun control, not less.

Instead of intimidating law-abiding citizens, why don't these tough guys go into high-crime neighborhoods with their guns?
DeleteThe abc article is right, they can't just go with fighting background checks, they have to toss in something bigger, like "culture" to make it sound more palatable to "fight for".
ReplyDeleteDo they not watch the news? Read stories like those in the links you provided?
Seriously, a kid rapes and kills his mom, texts his gun fetishist dad that he killed his mom and to come home, and the dad jokingly texts back, oh just toss her in the woods and we'll take care of it when I get home? WTF is wrong with this picture?
What is the woman in the photo doing with a gun in her hand? Stop the insanity!
I totally agree with your entire post, a bible in one hand, an uzi in the other. Drop the gun, read the book.
From the "bus lady."
ReplyDeleteGryph, I believe in Jesus, although I wouldn't call myself a Christian because I don't even come close to walking the talk and certainly don't proselytize to others. Sure I've been a little put off at some of your posts, but we all are entitled to our own beliefs. Namaste!
You are spot ON here: "And the hypocrisy of worshiping a man of immense peace and acceptance while arguing for access to weapons designed for murder would be completely lost on them."
Old Testament is what they go by! They wouldn't know The Sermon On The Mount if it slapped them in the face, especially since Jesus warned to be highly wary of people JUST LIKE THEM. Christian they are NOT.
I leave you with a tune. Thanks for ALL you do. I may not agree with you always, but I defend your right to tell it as you see it! HUGE fan of this blog!
