“The pro-life perspective is the growing majority in America. We are the ones that rushed into Eastern Europe and arrested the Holocaust, we are the ones that said no more to slavery after thousands of years, and by the grace of God, we’re going to be the ones that say that we’re going to protect our own children,” Franks, a six-term Congressman from Arizona, told his cohorts.
Responding to Perkins’ asking what happens if his bill (which, remember, is both unconstitutional and will never pass the Democratically-controlled Senate, nor will President barack Obama ever sign it) fails, Franks responded:
“I would suggest to you that we undermine everything that America was ever dreamed of to be and we step into that Sumerian night where the light of compassion has gone out and the survival of the fittest finally prevails over man…If we turn our backs on this, I’m afraid we’ve broken the back of what America really is.”
"If we turn our backs on this, I’m afraid we’ve broken the back of what America really is.” Nothing like a little hyperbole in the morning don't you think?
Trent Franks also recently held a hearing with the rest of his "No Girlz Allowed" club in an attempt to pass a bill forbidding access to abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy, with no exceptions for incest, rape, or to protect the life of the mother.
Yeah who cares about the mother's life anyhow, it is all about protecting the fetus.
Comparing the current anti-abortion zealots with the soldiers who liberated Auschwitz or the brave Americans who finally voted to do away with slavery is incredibly disgusting and betrays a lack of perspective, both biological and historic.
As we have said before folks this attack on a woman's right to choose seems to be the MOST pervasive driving force behind these Teabaggers. They spend FAR more time on it then they do on job creation, tax reform, deficit reduction, or ANY of the things they ran on in order to get elected in the first place.
They lied to their constituents about why they were running for office, convincing them that they were going to "fix Washington," when all they seem to really want to do is obstruct progress and chip away at Roe Vs Wade until every woman is chained to their kitchen, bare foot and pregnant, like God intended.
Are ya'll ready to vote these assholes out yet?
Morality is not determined by the church you attend nor the faith you embrace. It is determined by the quality of your character and the positive impact you have on those you meet along your journey

Tea Party Republican Congressman states that denying women their constitutionally protected right to control their bodies is the moral equivalent of stopping the Holocaust and ending slavery. I'm sorry, what?

The U.S. lagged behind many European countries in outlawing slavery, Mr.Franks, and it took a Civil War to accomplish it here. Some 600,000 Americans died in that war. By no means did all valiant and brave Americans want to get rid of their slaves and their slave economy.
ReplyDeleteSecond, Mr. Franks, our several Allies in World War II were just as responsible for conquering Germany, Poland and the other states held by the Nazis and in which the Holocaust was carried out
In fact, there are some good arguments that we didn't do enough or fast enough when we knew the
camps existed.
We are a great country, and exceptional for many reasons. But good people exist all over the world.
We don't have a monopoly on goodness.
And this country was founded, before the Revolution, by many different factions who had many different agendas. The Revolution can be seen as an economic act as well as a political one.
The only religion I know of that sees the U.S. as God-given are the Mormons, who think Jesus is going to land in a corn field in Missouri for the Second Coming. I'll bet Mr. Franks and many of his constituents are Mormons, or have fallen under the spell of their self-pride and entitlement. And Mormons, along with a lot of other very conservative religions, want their women producing a "quiverful" of children.
Mormonism is basically a Ponzi scheme -- the more Mormons, the more 10% of their income flows to Salt Lake City and the many Mormon businesses run by a clutch of old white men.
Correction: Franks is a Southern Baptist, barely educated, associated for many years with Dobson's Focus on the Family.
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't have any history background, but loves to just assert his prejudices as written fact.
I have no argument with anti-abortion proponents trying, lawfully and respectfully, to educate women about abortion and about their options. But until it is proven that a fetus is a person, it remains a part of its mother's body until it is born. And, as part of that woman, she can do whatever she feels she wants to do with it.
I strongly recommend watching the many episodes of an English tv drama: "Calling the Midwife" about life in dirt-poor East London during the 1950s, before reliable birth control came along.
It gives you an idea of the desperation of women with eight children already, the dangers of back-alley abortions. It's actually a wonderful series -- but it should remind us that back-alley abortions will begin again when the powers that be, the men who pontificate about "life," have outlawed sterile, legal abortion as every women's right.
In case you're looking for "Call the Midwife", PBS was running it on Sunday evenings at 8 p.m., but I believe the last episode for this series was last Sunday. However, check your local library for the book. My DH just finished reading it and, having lived in London during that period, he was absolutely astounded at what these poor women had to endure. In fact, he said it was the best book he'd ever read (and he's read LOTS!!!).
DeleteWhen one of these religious nuts mentions slavery, you can just stop listening. If this supposedly Christian nation was really so gung-ho against slavery from the very beginning, then slavery would have ended right after the revolution.
ReplyDeleteIt's amazing how the christian majority alternates between being persecuted and telling everyone else to suck it up depending on what is convenient at any particular moment.
What's even more amazing is that Christians could be persecuted in a Christian country.
DeleteBut, you know...Anyone with an accurate knowledge of history knows America isn't a Christian country. Just like anyone with an ounce of common sense and a little basic education knows that a new conception isn't a person.
One of the local (northwest Lower Michigan) over-the-top fundamentalist preachers who has a spot on local access television sits with a caricature of Abraham Lincoln (like an ape) above his left shoulder and a copy of a romanticized painting of Robert E. Lee (complete with halo) leading the troops over his right shoulder. Nothing subtle about that! But I bet he would deny that any racism lurks behind his "glory to God" exclamations that are sprinkled liberally throughout his sermons.

Meh, this seems to be mainstream thinking in today's GOP, it's ,more difficult to find a Republican who believes the earth is round, man didn't walk with dinosaurs, and thinks the holocausr and slavery are not equal to abortion. Nothing any of these nut jobs says shocks me anymore, they are just more comfortable saying these things in public now.
ReplyDeleteVirginia Voter
I wish someone would teach Republicans a little twentieth-century history. First of all we did not "rush" "into Eastern Europe" and "arrest[ed] the Holocaust," we slogged through Western Europe and liberated camps while the Russians did the same from the East. And someone should explain that preventing a woman from having an abortion for any reason, but especially for reasons of health - her own or her child's - is not at all tantamount to Hitler's extermination policies. In addition they need to be told that, if all of these children are to be born and cherished, then the government has a DUTY to assure that they will all have good health care, good educational opportunities and the right to grow up without ever feeling marginalized. This man has been elected six times???? Who would have even voted for him one time?

The Holocaust analogy is a very popular theme with my wacko Catholic relatives whose only goal in life is to attack and end legalized abortion. They think this quest will send them directly to heaven when they die, no matter how appalling their behavior has been throughout their lives.
ReplyDeleteIf you tell them quite rationally, as I have tried, that ending legal abortions won't stop abortions or suggest that birth control might be a better way to end abortion, they work themselves into a foaming at the mouth fury and start spewing words like communist, nazi, hitler, blah, blah blah... Mercifully, many of them won't speak to me anymore.
5:31? The next time they spew that garbage about ending the Holocaust, explain to them the agreement between the Pope and Nazi Germany. The one that said if Germany leaves the catholic church alone, the church won't complain about the murder of the jews? Yeah. THAT one.
DeleteOh. And make certain you have a copy of the history about it with you when you tell them because otherwise they will get VERY angry. (I know. I've tried.) Catholics only know the history they are taught by the church. They don't WANT to know any other. At least, the hardline ones, anyway. But even the "others" are really hard to convince.
The only ones with half an open mind? Those who aren't "practicing catholics"! And a tremendous number of those are EX-believers!
My mother, who died in the 1990's, was a practicing Catholic who knew women who had died having abortions and always thought that that was tragic. She was a young adult during the Depression so she knew about and fully believed in birth control. We knew very few families, most of them Catholic, with lots and lots of kids in the 1940's and 1950's. She and her friends were pragmatic Catholics, not like the latest generation.
DeleteAnd nothing infuriates me more than for twenty-first century Americans to invoke the Holocaust so freely. It was a living nightmare and it had nothing to do with optional abortions. What an insult to those who died and for their families who live on.
Beaglemom
I think it's a lost cause for these troglodytes. Anyone who thinks Nazis and Communists are the same isn't worth talking to. Their brains need a few thousand more years of evolution. What is really funny are the ex-believers who still spout the bullshit because they haven't a clue how to think for themselves.
DeleteAll we are good for is makin babies (sorry, the Palin's rebranded them as "Joys."
ReplyDeleteAnd isn't it handy that we sluts are all Virgin Mary's that get pregnant on our own, only to suffer under the heavy hand of man's law.
O/T Looks like Sarah hasn't been sharing her Botox with Todd.

Actually, this, unfortunately, is one of those things that will resonate with the ignorant bible belt voters and all the other religious fanatics. They seem to be quite good at coming up with ways of framing an argument that the stupids can actually swallow - WHOLE! It doesn't matter to them what they say is factually wrong. The PEOPLE to whom they are speaking WANT to believe it, so they actually do believe it. Regardless of the truth or the facts.
ReplyDeleteWe need to learn from them about doing this, because it is a certainty that LOGIC and FACTS aren't going to beat them!
And it REALLY pains me that I have to say it, too!
I sincerely hope that we actually CAN beat their pants off in 2014!
Gadfree, have we got some weird, foul people in Congress today. I'm really sick and tired of men (Republicans) thinking they can control women. Down w/them I say! Don't reelect them from wherever they are. Their poor wives, daughters and granddaughters.
ReplyDelete"...we believe what our Declaration says, that we are created in the image of God..."
ReplyDeleteThe Declaration does not say that.
NOWHERE in the Declaration of Independence does it say that.
"survival of the fittest" is Darwin. I thought they didn't believe in Darwin. Huh. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way...
ReplyDeleteThe Declaration of Independence does NOT say
"...we are endowed by our Creator..."
What it DOES say is
"...they are endowed by their creator..."
Do you see the difference?
What the Declaration of Independence actually says is that their creator can be Allah, Buddah, the Flying Spaghetti Monster or WHATEVER they deem their creator to be.
NOT "OUR CREATOR".
Don't believe me?
Go read it.
Did you know Josh Duggar of 19 kids and counting will be working at the Family Research Council in DC?
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's all about protecting the fetus until it is actually born. Then you're on your own, baby! Get a job! Assholes.
ReplyDeleteBAN VIAGRA!
Poor women will suffer at the hands of back-alley abortionists and wealthy women will have safe abortions in Europe and Canada. Congress can NOT prevent women traveling to sane countries for abortions. Anti-choice legislators know they are POWERLESS to stop wealthy women from having abortions. In their rage at their own powerlessness, they want to inflict as much harm as possible on poor women.
ReplyDeleteThis is a war against POOR women.
What is this idiot planning to do? Stop pregnant women from boarding planes to countries where abortions are available and safe?
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, the ignorant people who need to hear this message are effectively prevented from that by the right wing media and their disgusting politicians.
ReplyDeleteWe'll have women pee-ing on a pregnancy test stick at the airports so they can't take a fetus to a country that has reasonable women's health care. Imprisoning every fertile women within the borders of the United States sounds pretty much like a concentration camp to me.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding: that's the next illogical step. And if the flight should make them miscarry, they'll be marched off to prison for murder.
DeleteAfter all, the Texas legislature now attempts to pass seven anti-abortion statutes PER DAY (694 attempts between January and March of this year alone). Congress has attempted literally hundreds and hundreds of anti-abortion bills in the past five years – more than the sum of all other legislative attempts combined.
http://www.addictinginfo.org/2013/05/25/dont-mess-with-women-in-texas-24-anti-choice-bills-defeated/
If we can't get it banned, I want a probe up their weenies to prove they need it , not just their word. So many are just for being men whores. These tea partiers are putting into motion corporate slaves of the future. They won't have to make jobs especially for women, who have so many children, they can't leave them. Any miscarriage they will be imprisoned - won't be able to get food stamps because they have been convicted of a violent crime. See how they are getting all of this in line. Just like they have taken so many yrs to get redistricting done for their voting, so with this, the evil Koch bros. want slaves for the wealthy and corp., ppl will have no choice but to let the children go, to save, or better the rest of the family. They plan well into the future.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have read comments by republican politicians who have openly admitted that they'd like to return to slavery – wage slavery, provided, of course, that they are on the master end of the deal and not the slave end. Even their immigration law 'reform' bills reflect this desire: they want all immigrants to be limited to 'domestic' (maid, servant) jobs, meaning they can basically control the lives (including the sex lives, by rape and otherwise) of these people. It is not an understatement to call such people evil in the extreme.
DeleteI think you have made an interesting point and I appreciate how you said it. I have met people with Latino help in their homes and they do treat them as if they are slaves. It is a sick mindset and the relationship between slave and master is one of power and no power — no way around it.
DeleteExporting abortions does not prevent abortions.
ReplyDeleteAnd in addition to all the rest of this man's crazy statements, it's clear he is totally ignorant of ancient history.
ReplyDeleteTo make a remark like "....that Sumerian night where the light of compassion has gone out and the survival of the fittest finally prevails over man" show he knows nothing of the great ancient civilization that invented writing, advanced farming & building methods, the 360 circle, the potter's wheel, wheeled transportation, advanced water-movement systems (some of which are still in use today) mapped the skies and measured the movements of stars and planets.....
Oh...but they were just a bunch of cannabalistic barbarians....
It is terrifying that people this ignorant are in public office.
I am beginning to believe all this anti-abortion legislation by right wingers is covering up other things in their lives they simply cannot square with reality. I guess we can start with the lack of intelligence and go on from there. Mostly, I just ignore them and send an appreciable donation each year to Planned Parenthood. But, when they talk like this I know the crazy is on and they are running scared. Nobody with half a brain would equate abortion with the holocaust or slavery.
