Newly released documents prove that IRS also targeted liberal groups seeking tax exemption . Darrell Issa has officially become the "Boy who Cried Wolf."

"Yeah but what about, fast and furious...Benghazi...Irs scandal...birth certificate..nothing?"
Courtesy of The New York Times:

The instructions that Internal Revenue Service officials used to look for applicants seeking tax-exempt status with “Tea Party” and “Patriots” in their titles also included groups whose names included the words “Progressive” and “Occupy,” according to I.R.S. documents released Monday.

The documents appeared to back up contentions by I.R.S. officials and some Democrats that the agency did not intend to single out conservative groups for special scrutiny. Instead, the documents say, officials were trying to use “key word” shortcuts to find overtly political organizations — both liberal and conservative — that were after tax favors by saying they were social welfare organizations.

But the practice appeared to go much farther than that. One such “be on the lookout” list included medical marijuana groups, organizations that were promoting President Obama’s health care law, and applications that dealt “with disputed territories in the Middle East.”

Taken together, the documents seem to change the terms of a scandal that exploded over accusations that the I.R.S. had tried to stifle a nascent conservative political movement. Instead, the dispute now revolves around questionable sorting tactics used by I.R.S. application screeners.

Well there goes yet another non-scandal scandal blowing up in the  Republican's face.

This information, along with the documents which prove the idea for the keywords came from a conservative Republican, and not the White House, SHOULD put this whole thing to rest.

So do you know the difference between liberal groups being scrutinized after requesting tax exempt status and conservative groups being scrutinized after requesting tax exempt status?

Liberals aren't candy asses that bitch and whine about being treated unfairly.

Issa has had his ass handed to him again! He needs to be 'demoted' or pulled from that committee. The Republicans are a mess back there in D.C. as well as across the country. Time to vote that party out of office whenever able!!!

He's the felon who cried "wolf."
Every reference to him should somehow point to his past criminal behavior.
He's a shyster, a sneaky sleeze, if ever there was one. The GOP should strip him of his authority asap. He's only making of fool of himself and of them.

Yup...might as well enjoy it while we can. Fortunately for those of us with an IQ somewhere above a kumquat, he's got lots of company in that effort. I think the word 'implosion' is appropriate here.

  3. Never let anyone get anything on you and never do anything you can’t defend. There will always be a Darrell Issa out there.

That kind of cautiousness limits friendships, you cannot have a partner in crime, but I think it explains Barack Obama’s reputation for being aloof. He fully trusts very few people and good for him.

Good point, Darlene. I think he learned quickly after he spent a good amount of time with the right, thought he had their cooperation, and they stabbed him in the back. And will do it again, given a chance. Time to vote the GOP OUT of power before they do any more damage and waste any more of the money they swear they are not spending.

The IRS has targeted liberal activist groups for decades. Anyone who worked in civil rights in the 60s and 70s will tell you they were investigated regularly and mercilessly. The fact that a few old farts in tri-corner hats got snooped at last year suddenly makes it news. Get over it, teabags.

As the IRS Scandal Goes Down in Flames, An Important Lesson for the NSA Story

So it appears as if the so-called IRS scandal has finally evaporated into nothingness. The central claim in this non-scandal was specifically that the IRS had been unfairly and exclusively targeting conservative tea party groups and, it was assumed, rejecting the 501(c)4 applications filed by those groups. The immediate analysis was that President Obama had grossly abused the mighty federal government as a means of political retribution. Calls for impeachment ensued, and a congressional investigation was launched by Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Yesterday, however, we received further confirmation via a document published by the AP that the IRS was also scrutinizing left-wing 501(c)4 groups using “be on the lookout” (BOLO) terms like “progressive,” “Occupy,” “Medical Marijuana,” “occupied territory advocacy,” “Green Energy Organizations” and “Healthcare legislation.” We also learned that the IRS used BOLOs to target newspapers that applied for non-profit status as educational publications.

Come to think of it, we’ve kind of known since the beginning that liberal groups were also examined and rejected for non-profit status. Back when the scandal originally broke, Bloomberg reported that at least three liberal groups were scrutinized, and two of the groups were denied tax exempt status. Later, we discovered that out of 176 organizations that were granted tax exempt status in 2010, 122 were conservative and 48 were liberal/non-conservative. In other words, more than twice as many conservative groups were approved over liberal groups.

We’ve been aware of these massive gaps in the integrity of the story because many of us asked very serious questions from the beginning. We endeavored to discover how the IRS handles non-profit applications, what events and decisions created the influx of 501(c)4 groups and whether the scrutiny was a matter of routine or if politics skewed the process.

While some of us were asking questions, the Republican Party, led by the conservative entertainment complex, blindly lost its collective shpadoinkle and engaged in histrionics that almost entirely superseded its histrionics over the Benghazi non-scandal.

There’s a valuable lesson here, one that ought to be considered in the context of the NSA story.

Tell me if this sounds familiar....

I'm mystified. From the outset I had read that about 700 groups were 'targeted' for review and of that number about 30% were conservative or TeaParty but none of them were denied although two progressive groups were denied and their role actually was non political.

Why did this part of the report go so easily underground? I used this info as rebuttal on several blog sites and HuffyPo and was shouted down immediately. Will have to check my HP box to see if I received any 'apologies' from the ham handed cons who are paid big time to rebut anything that doesn't fall in line with Faux et al.

Boehner said he wants to know "'who is going to jail?" We can now raise our hands and wave frantically that we KNOW the answer. It's Darrell Issa right????

Information about the groups that were scrutinize came out months ago but the excuses in corporate media ignored it because they are and have always been shills for the republicans.

The IRS agency also scrutinize progressive groups and no conservative groups’ applications were denied. Progressive groups were however.

Darrell Issa who had all the info for months and kept it from the public. And the corporate media played it's part.

The big unanswered question is why the inspector general's audit didn't mention that progressive groups and open source organizations were also targeted. Finally, the Democrats, thanks to Rep. Cummings, have awakened and are starting to fight back.

I think it did, but Issa withheld that info..how he thought he was going to get away with it, I have no idea...or was the plan just to cry foul and rile up the neocons once again? I bet I could write to a couple of my siblings and they'd never believe tis...because they won' t hear it on their 'news' station.

And, now Issa is moving to the SS plan as to those w/disabilities - guess approvals for those w/disabilities has increased. I have MS (and, as yet have not applied for that benefit - because I am still able to walk (horribly) and take care of myself), but know there will be a time that I will be applying.

I've been told that the application for the disability takes a good two years and that the help of an attorney is usually required.

Republicans hate the SS plan and Medicare - history shows that. Seniors across the nation will pay attention IF what Issa is doing now its time senior Americans pay attention to his actions.

Every time he has tried to go after President Obama - he has failed horribly. All he and the Republicans are trying to do is make constant trouble for our president and keep it consistent. They hate the fact he was reelected for his second term and it's driving them nuts!

Issa should be pulled from that committee! He is making Congress and his Republican party look like idiots and no wonder their approval rating back there is in the teens! They have brought it all on themselves.

I doubt that many seniors (those who are NOT living below the poverty line) will not even notice Issa coming after their benefits.

After all, Issa is a republicans as are most of them. Seniors who are not having difficulty surviving don't see spend much time being concerned about people who are not as well off as they. Besides, they hate President Obama and many of them believe any nonsense coming from a republican.

Look at how they flocked to Mitt and Ryan.

It seems that everyday we hear of yet another insane item involving Republicans.

This one about some Texas woman who sponsored an anti-abortion bill, claiming that rape victims don't have anything to worry about, as the police provide a "rape kit" that cleans them out so thoroughly that there is no traumatic problems afterwards; and the continued misadventures of Darrel Issa, have me thinking a new panel HAS to be set up...

...one that will hear cases of extreme stupidity and wrongdoing by government officials. Leading to immediate expulsion from office.
