Rachel Maddow predicts that upcoming rulings by the Supreme Court on gay marriage could spell doom for the Republican party. She has a point.

This from Mediaite:

“Republican politicians are about to lose the luxury of only talking about gay rights in front of anti-gay audiences like the Faith and Freedom Coalition, or avoiding the question altogether because they don’t want to be quoted about it because their Republican position on the subject is so unpopular,” Maddow said.

“Nobody who has any real prospects of being a national leader in Republican politics in the next few years has anything other than a 100% anti-gay policy position on something like nondiscrimination,” Maddow said.

“That is apparently still a requirement if you are a Republican and you want to hold higher national office.” That stubbornness is “going to come crashing down on the Republican Party,” when the Court rules on gay marriage soon.

“After these rulings come out, this is going to be the biggest news in the country,” Maddow said. “They’re going to have to talk to the rest of the country, too, increasingly not only against them on these issues but bewildered by them and their positions on these issues.”

I actually don't know how the court will rule on the  issue of marriage equality, but I DO agree that if they rule in support of it, the Republicans will find themselves on a sinking ship with not a lifeboat in sight.

And I have to admit that I find it deliciously ironic that the end of the GOP may come NOT from immigration, or a diminishing religious base, but instead due to their vilification of a group of people who are only asking for the right to participate in an activity which the conservatives deem the foundation of moral principles in this country, marriage and family.

Yeah, but that discrimination is justified by their base on a religious basis.

Agreed, but remember one thing: That religious base is diminishing rapidly due to the young leaving churches in droves - BECAUSE the young find the hate being preached to be anathema to their personal values!

I think the Republican party is doomed for more than that reason. Their stand on women's rights is horrible. They are also anti abortion - are closing clinics across the country so women cannot access them, have voted to cut funding to Planned Parenthood and they could care less if women are paid less than men (even in the higher positions).

They are a party that is a mess in having the likes of Sarah Palin, John McCain, Mitch McConnell, Eric Cantor etc. John McCain wants us in another war in the middle east.

All they do is spread fear, untruths and obstruct our President Obama.

The entire first paragraph is due mainly to their ridiculous adherence to the far right religious stances.

They have long been known as hawks, so McCain's stance is nothing new.

And they hate Obama simply BECAUSE he is (for the most part) the polar opposite of them - and is black!

Anything that can end the GOP is welcome. But it should have ended long ago, or at least have ended last year when Todd Akin uttered the immortal words

"...from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." (August 19, 2012)

  4. The decline of this GOP has been in the works for a while. Gay Marriage may be the straw, but the camel/elephant has been steadily weakening. They have no real answers to the problems and challenges that we face as a nation and a planet. Thus, their only offerings are division, confusion, hatred, fear and utter stupidity. This simply cannot continue.
I hope to see a reshaping of our political party system in my lifetime!

You're implying all republicans are anti-gay. that is like saying all democrats are cheese-eating, welfare living ignorant asshats. just because there are some doesn't mean the whole party is thta way.

You are right, but then why do most of they elect show themselves to be anti- gay, women, minority and equality for all?

Take any civil rights issue, put a wadd of chewed gum on it, and stick it to the term "Special Rights" or "Slippery Slope" has been the time tested game the GOP plays.

Their track record on women's rights, reproductive rights, pay parity, and VAWA is abysmal.
Some 90 percent of the public are for marriage equality, the clock is ticking and the GOP has some serious soul searching to do, or risk losing their livelihood.

How can the GOP attract young, hispanic, gay, or female voters if they continue to stay on the wrong side of the issues?

Hope the Supreme Court rules against gay marriage.

  8. I think the GOP's ship began sinking long ago. And Rachel is right, but even if the Supreme Court doesn't rule in favor of gay marriage, states are slowly coming around as is the American public, so be it later this month or a year from now or five years from now, the GOP is going to look like the homophobic bigots they are.

They're screwed either way, especially because their core members are all slowly dying off and God knows people under the age of 40 don't like the Republican party. Yep, they're screwed. Royally.
