This just in, the Bible says NOTHING about abortion.

Courtesy of Alternet:

The Bible says nothing whatsoever about abortion. It never mentions the subject, not once, neither in the Old Testament nor the New. This isn't because abortion was unknown in the ancient world. Much to the contrary, the ancient Greeks and Romans were well-acquainted with the idea. Surviving writings from these cultures recommend the use of herbs like pennyroyal, silphium and hellebore to induce abortion; others advise vigorous physical activity to cause a miscarriage, and some even discuss surgical methods.

It's impossible to imagine that no Jewish or Christian woman in the ancient world ever had to deal with an unwanted pregnancy. Thus, it's reasonable to conclude that the Bible's authors never mention abortion because they weren't especially concerned about it. This often forces modern Christian anti-choicers to resort to laughable rationalizations like, "It was so unthinkable that an Israelite woman should desire an abortion that there was no need to mention this offense in the criminal code." (This, in a book whose authors thought it worthwhile to set down the punishment for having a threesome with your wife and mother-in-law.)

There are later Christian writings that explicitly mention and forbid abortion, such as the Didache. But none of these documents made it into the canon of the Bible, which must be frustrating for modern anti-choicers who'd love to have a "clobber verse" they can throw at women seeking to exercise control over their own bodies.

Instead, religious-right activists are forced to engage in creative reinterpretation of vague biblical passages, trying to wring out something they can use to "prove" God is in favor of mandatory childbearing. One of the common ones is Jeremiah 1:4-5, which they claim as a divine endorsement of fetal personhood:

The word of the Lord came to me, saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

The most obvious problem with this, besides the fact that it says nothing specific about abortion, is that it's not a general statement about all of humanity; it's a special predestination intended only for the prophet Jeremiah. What's more, from an anti-choice standpoint, it says too much: it says that God knew Jeremiah not just while he was in the womb, but before forming him in the womb. Perhaps the pro-life slogan should be, "Life begins before conception"?

Another that's often cited is Psalms 139:

"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb... My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth."

This is a truism in the Judeo-Christian worldview, since in that belief system, by definition, God creates everything. A verse saying that he created one particular thing, therefore, doesn't establish the moral status of that thing. Presumably, in the same poetic sense that this passage puts it, it's equally true from a biblical standpoint that God "creates the inmost being" of other animals and "knits them together" in the womb, but Christians have never considered that an argument for veganism.

This handful of vague verses constitutes the sum total of the anti-choice arsenal, even in the most searchingly creative scheme of interpretation.

The article goes on to point out that rather than venerating the life of the unborn, there are several passages in the Bible, in Genesis, Exodus, and the Book of Numbers specifically which target the fetus for death.

The facts are that the so called "pro-life" movement has ALWAYS been focused more on politics than on saving the life of any potential babies. After all if these people were so concerned with supporting human life they would be heralding programs like Head Start, WIC, increasing the minimum wage, and promoting access to birth control so that a family can manage the number of mouths they have to feed more effectively.

But they don't.

It might be of interest for these zealots to recognize that this movement is relatively new, especially considering how long that Christianity has been around, and that as late as 1974 the Southern Baptists were called upon "to work for legislation that will allow the possibility of abortion under such conditions as rape, incest, clear evidence of severe fetal deformity, and carefully ascertained evidence of the likelihood of damage to the emotional, mental, and physical health of the mother."

And that is wasn't until  1980 that conservative Protestant leaders became vocal in their opposition to legalized abortion.

What changed? Well what changed is that in 1960 the Pill was invented giving women control over when and with whom they would have a child, and in  1973 Roe vs Wade was passed which said that even if women DID become pregnant they were no longer required to give birth.

Those changes terrified traditional thinking men who had been raised to expect that women were second class citizens who required a man to support them, protect them, and give their life meaning.

When women became independent, men became insecure.

So how best to discourage that independence? By taking away the thing that empowers women the most control over their ability to reproduce.

The pro-life movement has never been about protecting life. The pro-life movement has been about controlling life. Specifically the lives of women.

Spot on Jesse! However I still would never have an abortion unless it was medically necessary or I had been raped, and that decision is MY CHOICE!

Thank you for being a reasonable, rational person who understands the real meaning of the word "choice."

And curiously, there wasn’t a great hand-wringing in religious circles in 1973 until statistics on abortion found most women seeking abortions were white women between the ages of 19 and 23. The backlash against women has been in high gear since.

Yes, I truly believe the race-war concept is a huge driving force behind this. It would be helpful to know what the current abortion statistics are. But there is no question that fear of being outnumbered is probably #1 on the righties' paranoia lists.

It also means men are not in control and this is as scary as it gets for paranoid white guys.

After reading your post about Rick Perry and the Texans wanting to prohibit abortion after six weeks, I did a little research about what a "fetus," no longer just a zygote, looks and acts like at that age.
There are "stumps" for arms and legs, as well as a vestigial tail. On what will become the head there are "eye spots." The entire entity is the size of a lima bean. Clearly, there isn't a hint that it could live outside its mother for months to come.
They're basically trying to eliminate all abortions by doing this -- six weeks being a time when some women don't even know, or aren't sure, they're pregnant at all.
I am fervently "pro-choice," but have never had an abortion and don't think I could bring myself to do so. But I don't know -- if I'd been raped, if I were sick, I'd have difficult choices to make. I'd want the opportunity to make those choices, and I don't want to dictate to any other woman what she might or might not do.
When in doubt, the woman must be the final decider in this. Roe v. Wade set a reasonable cut-off time, and it's been the law of the land for 40 years.

Abortions won't end -- they'll be done in back alleys, threatening the lives of many women.
No theologian or politician can ignore the deaths they will cause with their draconian legislation.

I was sick. I was 21, 110 lbs, and 5 years deep into an eating disorder.

I had no idea I was pregnant until I was 20 weeks along. I didn't look it, because I survived on 100 calories a day, and the fetus was just as malnourished as I was.

my obgyn told me, you need to terminate this pregnancy, if you carry to term, it WILL kill you.

late term abortion at 22 weeks. because you can do that in NY.

      I would have died otherwise.

would and have - as the idea of a child of mine being given up for adoption and ending up in a fundie home would be exactly the same as knowingly putting said kid into a life of torture and despair.

Torturous thought. Recently I had a conversation with an old white right-winger man who says the problem is women do not hold men accountable after they become pregnant out of wedlock. What an idiot. Do you ever wonder how many men worry or hope their adopted out children will seek them in adulthood? I’m willing to go out there on a limb and suggest it is a zero number. But, I have sat with women friends who did give away babies as teens and they agonize to this day that their children had no holds barred loving parents. I could never take that chance, no way any child of mine would be given up to such an unknown and this is why I am pro choice.

As a Christian I am pro choice. I have to remind other "Christians" that it doesn't mean pro-abortion. It means the decision is up to the woman. God gave us free choice for a reason. Sick to death of these dickheads who think we women are second class citizens. Assclowns.

As a fellow Christian, I was pregnant at 26 and was SO scared to tell my religious parents for what they and extended family would say, hypocrites that they were. Made the appointment for an abortion and, in the waiting room, knew I could not go through with it and walked out.

Catch hell for knocked up before marriage? OMG did I, disgraced the family....but it was MY choice, NO one else's, and eventually told them how close I came because of their attitudes and sanctimonious preaching. BOY were they quiet.

My daughter is now 29 and I NEVER judge ANYONE for the choices they make in life. I will ALWAYS have issues with hypocrites and why I cannot abide the Palins and those like them.

      Just shut UP.

Yes, specifically, it is up to the woman and her doctor. Tragic that doctors now fear for their lives over doing this, and very few now know how to do it properly. It used to be taught in medical school, and there was a medically safe environment for doing it. Now, right-wing legislators are making all those medical decisions – including the decision as to whether or not any woman should be forced to get vaginal probe. In essence, they are practicing medicine without a license.

Gryphen, now you're a bible scholar? If you would read your bible more and annoy The Screechy Wretch(tm) less, you would know the Good Book tells us:

"And Jeebus saideth, "If it bleeds, it breeds"
    Vulvans 28:30

You don't have to be a scripture scientist to know that's a clear commandment that sacred life begins at flirtation.

Anyway, this whole controversy about abortion got started when someone got the BRILLIANT idea to let American women learn to read.

    And vote.

I dunno about you, but Im wondering maybe this whole Christian country would be better off if the Taliban was in charge. Now THOSE guys know how to treat women!

I'd like to hear more about the restrictions against having a threesome with wifey and her mom. What if Father- in-law is a Pimp and his wife kicked his sorry ass out and his daughter hates him, too?

There must be special circumstances that make it cool whenever MiL is a MILF and wants a little action w the approval of Wifey, who understands that the husband is the boss of the moss and that she must comply with his wishes. In a biblical way, doncha know?

For as long as women have know that being pregnant means you're going to have a baby, they have sought ways to end pregnancy when it was inconvenient, dangerous, etc. That will never change because women understand the necessity of having control over their own bodies and reproduction.

Everything, literally everything, in politics is conceived, directed, and controlled by big money. Gryphen and fellow readers, if you could document the money trail that exists between the anti-abortion movement and its well-funded donors, it would truly be the journalistic coup of the century.

To clarify, I don't mean the few obvious donors that we already know about (Domino's Pizza, for example); I mean the REAL money and power groups that are spiriting this. I strongly believe the Vatican is behind this, but WHY? What's in it for them? More rent boys and pedophile victims from poor mothers?

Then, showing the reasons WHY the money is being dumped into this obsessive and incessant movement (more legislation state-wide, nationwide, and in Congress over this one issue than all other issues combined in recent years) would be the icing on the cake.

We MUST pull back the curtain and expose everyone and everything that is behind it. Battling the movement itself will not get the job done.

OMG it's on sale for $1.74!!!!!!!!!! You MUST get it if you haven't already!

I am Christian and personally am against abortion, but politically am pro-choice. I think late-term abortion should be limited (health of mom, rape, incest.) But repubs who rail abt late-term abortion don't acknowledge that by decreasing access to safe early term abortions they are pushing desperate women to the former. Women do not want to go through abortion-make birth control affordable (for all women) and let us make decisions for ourselves. Then abortions will be less frequent and occur eariier. If men could become pregnant this wouldn't even be an issue.

Actually, the bible has an effective recipe for abortion in it (careful, though, it can also cause a hysterectomy), and describes how the woman is to be taken to a priest (aka abortionist) to have it properly administered.

    Numbers, Chapter 5, verses 15-28

Interesting fun fact: The Catholic Church was the largest provider of abortions in Europe up until they made a deal with Napoleon, who was afraid that abortions were going to limit his future supply of warriors. Napoleon gave them control of the schools, thereby giving them clean access to control the minds of the youth, in return for the church stopping its abortions.

Oh what a tangled web they weave, when first they practice to deceive.

    And I keep saying...

Democrats need to pass a law that stipulates that THE FATHER WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING for the birth and all expenses related to raising the baby.

    Until the age of 18.

Doctors, diapers, formula, clothes, food, etc.

    IN other words:
Put your money where your morals are.

My guess is the laws against abortion will change REAL fast, once the MAN has to PAY for the baby.

My question is simple: who gave Christians the right to control what I as a non-believer? Theirs is a religiuous-based belief or opinion and some judge somewhere able to stop their attempt to force their religious belief on everyone who is not a Christian.

If you believe abortion is wrong because of your religious views, ghen fine don't get one.

If the Vegans of America wanted to push their spiritual beliefs on all of us regarding sancity of all animal life, would we meat-eaters stand still and let them ban all slaughtering or hunting of animals or fishing or harvesting of eggs? I think not. Why should we allow a small minority of extremist Chrisitans dominate all of us on the sanctity of fetal life. Vegans have a right not to eat meat. Chrisitans have a right not to get an abortion or use contraceptives, but neither group has a right to force their personal religious or spiritual views on those of us who hold different or no religious or spiritual views.

    Read:
Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back
    Frank Schaeffer (Author)

This book specifically addresses how these changes happened. Frank Schaeffer has not completely given it all up but he has been outspoken on the damage he helped cause. His parents spearheaded a movement to install the religious right agenda.

Catholics don't believe in the Bible alone. Reason tells us abortion is wrong. However people can be forgiven for abortion if they repent.

It never crossed my mind. All you PRO-Choicer's need to think long and hard. What if your Mother chose abortion? You would not exist. Your blog and research of the bible is your belief. Your perception only. A sad one.
