Officials in Tennessee say that a father and his 12-year-old son died over the weekend after an AR-15 assault-style rifle accidentally discharged, causing a fire and then a series of explosions in a room full of ammunition.
WBBJ-TV reported on Monday that Tennessee State Bomb and Arson Investigators, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Henderson County Sheriff’s Department were all looking into the Sunday deaths 48-year-old Terry York and his son, Luke.
According to family members, York’s AR-15 rifle accidentally discharged while he was in a back room of their home showing it off to some friends. The discharge ignited a small fire, which “did not seem too threatening at first,” they told WBBJ-TV. The blaze apparently grew out of control after Luke entered the room to help his father put out fire.
That’s when witnesses started hearing explosions.
“It was just like one right after another,” neighbor Kathleen Glass recalled. “One explosion right after another. I just don’t have the words for it because I can not imagine having to go through something like this.”
The family said that York stored a lot of ammunition in the room where the fire started, but officials insisted that they would conduct a full investigation before coming to any conclusions.
Usually I would say that this man had this coming to him for being so incredibly reckless, but the boy did not deserve to lose his life due to his father's ignorance.
A whole house full of guns and ammunition and rather than keep them safe, it ultimately ended their life.
How many times have we seen that same scenario play itself out?
According to the NRA, guns don't kill people...
ReplyDeleteAmen! And the NRA has a list of every person who owns the guns, not the government.
DeleteThey're right. It's the bullets. Bludgeoning by gun deaths are quite rare.
DeleteThat was exactly my first thought.
DeleteWhat a senseless tragedy.
Guns don't.
DeleteBullets do.
No, but exploding ammo does...I feel bad for the family, but with this and the lightning strike at the "Creation Museum," I think God is talking to Tennessee.
DeleteThose who say guns don't kill, people do, have yet to answer one question---how do the bullets/ammunition get into the gun? Granted, the gun is an inanimate object which needs bullets to do any damage, but I've never heard of a gun loading itself. I'm a gun owner, and the only way any bullets get into any of my guns is if I load them into it, so those who say guns don't kill, people do are attempting to somehow distance those who commit crimes from having anything to do with the bullets getting into the gun. Strange.
DeleteAnd another question, Gryph...
ReplyDeleteHow many *more times* will we have to see this situation play out?
It would be easy to snark about Darwin awards, but the poor kid was just trying to help his father.
ReplyDeleteDarlene,
DeleteIt is the Parent's "Duty" to keep HIS children safe! And out of harms way....this asshole failed.
The father gets the Darwin award. The kid gets to be "in heaven" with daddy thanks to daddy's thoughtlessness.
Right wing Birthcontrol. They breed like rats. The guns stop them.
ReplyDeleteToo bad about the kid.
The price paid for a idiot for a father.
OT: Bradley Manning comes out: She is Christina now http://cbsn.ws/14lW4wU
Yeah., um, who the FUCK is going to PAY for HER numerous surgeries and medical treatments now that SHE is a prisoner? ???
DeleteAND, now SHE is going to cost us extra money because SHE can't be housed with the men ORthe women, right? ?
What a fucking bitch!
Chelsea
Delete"As I transition into this next phase of my life, I want everyone to know the real me. I am Chelsea Manning, I am a female," Manning, 25, said in the statement read on NBC News' "Today" show.
He has requested hormone treatments and the military has already stated that they provide neither hormone treatments NOR sex change operations.
DeleteHis lawyer says he is determined to change that.
My feeling about his lawyer's statement? Good luck. At the rate the repubes are making advances in LGBT acknowledgement he'll be dead before they allow THAT to happen!
That does NOT mean he won't be able to pay for it himself, though. And with the number of people eager to back him as a hero, getting the funds won't be a problem, I think.
Getting PERMISSION to have it done and then getting transferred to the female side of Leavenworth is problematical. (He's already asked to be addressed as Chelsea from now on and requested transfer to the female side. A flat NO was the answer.)

I'm Happy for Christina. Hopefully she will GET a PARDON!
Oops Chelsea~
DeleteHey dude, you would be paying for it if she was in the military? And why is it ALWAYS who is paying with "you people"?
Ask you fucking church who pays for the Big house at the church? Ask the church if they pay taxes like YOU do?

DeleteYeah to the nra guns don't kill skittles do.
ReplyDeleteWhen are gun owners going to be required to have insurance just like car owners? When are gun owners going to be charged with child endangerment, when a gun, or guns or bullets goes off. Parents that have meth labs or drugs around children, loose their children, but many parents don't face any charges when children are killed by guns in their home. Think about that! I think people should sue to have the same rights as gun owners! I think if someone comes on your property with a gun they should have insurance just in case it goes off. I bet your homeowners insurance would have to pay.
ReplyDeleteLose - to misplace
DeleteLoose - too big
Good idea!
DeleteUnfortunately, the ammunition that is discharged at almost 1000 meters per second (> a half-mile/sec) from an AR-15 is usually lethal to the victim.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the kid, as he could possibly still have been rehabilitated, though 12 is a bit late. As for Daddy - DARWIN! the gene pool is a bit cleaner today.
ReplyDeleteGuns do not kill people... ammunition rooms filled to brim do.
ReplyDeleteSo with that let's just ban the ammunition ta-daa problem solved with all those accidents.
Be careful/ The wingnuts already think the Obama adminstration is buying up all their ammo..which, I agree, would solve the problem fairly quickly.
DeleteMany of these stories say they were showing the guns off to someone. They must forget all safety rules when bragging.
ReplyDeleteWas it worth it?
The dad was showing his gun/s to friends when it "accidentally went off". The gun nuts can't resist showing off their guns to people who probably have the same type guns. I have trouble believing that gun would have gone off "accidentally" if the man hadn't been handling it. Rather than an accident, I think something like that is mishandling which should be manslaughter if the father had survived.

Yep so true. You will get dinged about Darwin tho from the bleeding heart troll but fuck her, its the damn truth! That dumbass will never breed again! Hope his wife didn't have a bun in the oven either!

For his 13th birthday in heaven, Jesus will give the kid his own AK-47.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very sad story and the boy looks like such a nice child. When will gun owners in this country learn that they have in their possessions lethal weapons and that they should know how to take care of them.
ReplyDeleteBeaglemom
So True, and the same goes for parents taking care of their children.
DeleteIt would be so much more appropriate if these guys would just go in a back room somewhere and whip out their johnsons. That what so many of these men are into. "mine is bigger than yours". And for that a 12 year old dies.
ReplyDeleteSo when can we expect a tweet from the TundraTwit about how brave the man was to have all those guns in his home? How brave the child was to try to put out the fire? How Obama should get in front of that mic and tell the world that guns don't kill...come on Sarah, the NRA will love you for about 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThe Dad was negligent twice, once with the weapon and once with having his 12 yr old child "help him put out a fire" ??!!! Wouldn't most parents tell the child to exit the house? I know I would.
ReplyDeleteHomeowners' insurance companies should be asking all kinds of questions about gun and ammo ownership before even thinking of issuing – or renewing – policies. False answers would be third degree felonies (insurance fraud) that would be automatic grounds for denial of coverage – and imprisonment. That should simplify things, since without a policy, it's impossible to hold a mortgage.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of accident is bound to be repeated all over the country, since many nuts are amassing large quantities of ammo. It's not only negligence that could cause such a fire; an electrical shortage, lightning strike, or tornado could prove equally dangerous. Once a building gets engulfed in that kind of fire, other buildings in the neighborhood could be destroyed, and other lives could be lost. Alternatively, such buildings could become easy theft or vandalism targets, including by disgruntled family members. Teabekistan in practice is an insurance company's (and America's) worst nightmare.
I feel really bad that this little boy lost his life. The dad, OTOH, has only the NRA and gun manufacturers to thank for his untimely death. Evidently, he bought the NRA's advice about stockpiling weapons and ammunition, much to his own detriment. The NRA and gun manufacturers sold millions of Americans a load of bull when they created this lie. The stupid thing about all of this is that these tools are still waiting, almost a full five years later, for President Obama to knock on their doors and confiscate their guns. There should be a criminal penalty levied for being this stupid.
DeleteI am curious as to how an insurance company will deal with this situation. It reeks of negligence.
DeleteM from MD
While this was a tragedy for the family it could have been a much bigger tragedy had the stray bullets and subsequent fire affected neighbors or bystanders.
ReplyDeleteStupid people with their bang bang toys.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately too many people love their guns more than their own children.
ReplyDeleteHow sad is that?
Where are the Palin Trolls on this subject? That could have been Tri-g or Tri-pp in one of the Gun Nut Palin/Heath houses easily. What say you Creepy Chucky and Jr.?
ReplyDeleteWas the father a graduate of the "NRA's Gun Safety and Hunting Safely courses - The Dick Cheney Editions"..? My condolences to his son and remaining family members.
ReplyDeleteRest in Peace, little one.
ReplyDelete" but officials insisted that they would conduct a full investigation before coming to any conclusions."
Excuse me, but does this qualify as the most idiotic thing "officials" could ever say? What other "conclusion" could there be? Shitloads of ammo, a gun "Accidentally goes off", a fire and kaboom!
Don't get me wrong, I admire law enforcement and the job they do, but I doubt a meteor hit the room and set the fire, just sayin'
Another Darwin award.
ReplyDeletePoor kid looks inbred. He is as we say in the business, an FLK, funny lookin kid.
Sad that he was killed by his dad's stupidity, Survival of the fittest.
Most of you here are ignorant about guns.
