A humanist does not need to believe that they themselves will live forever. We take great solace and strength from realizing that the world, and the universe, will live on without us and that upon our death our essence and molecules will be reunited with the planet from which they were borrowed.
Not only are all human beings connected, but ALL life is connected, and once you remove God from the equation it allows you to finally accept your place in the universe and recognize that there is great peace and serenity awaiting you.
Including the Palin's, the most obvious unchurched fake family we all know.
ReplyDeleteDisillusioned White Fundamentalist Dreams of Military Takeover
ReplyDelete...Tea partiers expend a lot of verbiage on the Constitution but they don’t really like the Constitution, which is very secular and fails to mention their god, their Bible, and their Ten Commandments. Not even a nod or a whisper.
They seem to take an almost joyful delight in the idea of an apocalyptic end to American democracy so that their “godly” and shining city on a hill can rise from the ashes to embody an America that was “supposed” to have existed, an America of white evangelical Christians.

That's what it boils down to, they are the new Puritans and need to find their own (uninhabited) island and erect their Theocracy to legislate their morals.
DeleteSpeaking of god and religion, I recently read a quote by a so-called Christian leader called Gary Bauer.
DeleteHe is one of the most rabid of ultra right Dominionists who believes that only Christians are "true citizens" and everyone else should be denied rights under the Constitution.
The man is a viciously prejudiced theocrat who is not ashamed to say among other idiocies, quote:
"The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church's public marks of the covenant – baptism and holy communion – must be denied citizenship”
This is the travesty that is being preached from many pulpits to the ignorant and uneducated masses in flyover land and the deep South, and to the Teaparty who have conflated religion, patriotism, and conservatism into their own unholy mix.
When a big percentage of our fellow citizens believe such outright lies and are being urged "to take back their country" we may well see armed uprisings, egged on by the likes of Ted Nugent, $arah asshole Palin, and their compatriots on the Christian right
How to put this......The best part of dying is knowing I will be dead, done, finished. No worries about hell or even worse going to that big family reunion in the sky,

My godless kids are two of the nicest, most empathetic students in their elementary school (if I do say so myself).
ReplyDeleteThe Universe IS God....
ReplyDeleteNo it is not.
DeleteGiving it Godlike attributes is essentially an exercise in making it more palatable to your inability to accept it as it is.
Humans have an ingrained need to anthropomorphize things, and creatures, around us to help us relate to them. However doing so is incredibly selfish and insecure of us.
"God" is a product of reification overlaid by personification. There are real underlying phenomena, but they are consequences of the laws of physics, chemistry, biology, the structure of human societies, …, not the conscious actions of a self-aware personality. Nor do these phenomena provide support for the fantastical belief structures that people have erected upon them.

DeleteThat is just plain ignorant CRAP! If you choose to believe it, please try to NOT infect us with your disease!
*LOVE*
DeleteSo do humanists not believe in psychic or spirits/ghosts?
anon @6:49... if I may put in my thought?
ReplyDeleteThe Universe IS!
I would leave it there...
GOOD ALTERATION OF AN IGNORANT STATEMENT!
DeleteWell done.
I realized years ago that eternal life is gained by having descendents. A little bit of you lives on in each and every one of them.
ReplyDeleteWhen you realize that, then you want to take care of the Earth for future generations of yourself, not use everything up and poison it in one big orgy of selfishness. What we leave behind when we die is what we'll get and deserve in the future. Not some glorious afterlife where everything is perfect.
I'm not a Christian - was rammed down my throat for years - much like the 'unchristian' like Republicans are doing today!
ReplyDeleteHeaven or hell can be right here on earth and when we die, we die. I do not believe in an afterlife!
No offence intended to believers, but this is just how I see things-
ReplyDeleteWhen I hold a child in my arms, I see no fear, no hate, just love for humanity in their eyes. Nothing good can come from fear of eternal flames, burning bushes, pillars of salt etc etc etc. for the "sin" of simply being human. That's what bothers me most about religions.
