Florida city introduces new rule forbidding neighborhood watch participants from carrying guns. I think Trayvon Martin might say, "Better late than never."

Courtesy of Reuters:

The Florida city where neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman shot and killed unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin is changing the rules on how civilian patrols can operate to help prevent a recurrence and revive the program's reputation.

The new rules, to be released at a community meeting on November 5 in Sanford, Florida, will state explicitly that residents acting under the authority of neighborhood watch may not carry a firearm or pursue someone they deem suspicious.

"Neighborhood watch was always intended to be a program where you observe what is going on and report it to police. In light of everything that has gone on, that's what we're really going to go back and push. That's what this program is and that's all it is," said Shannon Cordingly, spokeswoman for the Sanford Police Department.

I am glad that Sanford City has taken this step and hope that many others follow suit.

Personally I don't think that neighborhood watch personnel should EVER be allowed to carry a gun in ANY city.  It is bad enough with cops shooting unarmed individuals without adding untrained, or poorly trained, amateurs to the mix.

Off topic , but Palin and Trump and 800 other close friends to descend on Asheville, NC next week to celebrate Billy Graham's 95th birthday.
Word is that Palin has asked she be allowed to jump out of the cake in a scanty outfit..
I hope she doesn't scare Billy as she looks nothing like the last time he saw her.

I wonder if George and Shelly are among the 800 close friends descending on Ashville like a storm of locusts?

    2. Sarah's schtick should be very popular at the after-parties down at the bar after all of the grifters kiss Franklin's ring and have their picture taken with dear ol' Rev. Billy Grraham. Maybe Sarah will entertain the hardleg Teabaggers with her extensive collection of dick jokes and Obama insults, and turn the thing into a SarahPAC fundraiser throwdown. The fact that she schlepped an invite to the gig really lowers it into the gutter of "tributes" to rival a Comedy Central Roast hosted by Ted Nugent.

My niece's in-laws are invited to the bash. Her father-in-law, who's a Baptist Minister in NC and a protege of Rev Graham will not be pleased at all to see Sarah Palin on the guest list. He's not your typical fire-and-brimstone Fundie, and seems pretty down to earth. I think it's because he's been in a college town where their congregation skews younger, more educated, and definitely more progressive.

Heathen that I am, I actually enjoyed his sermons and meeting several of their friends at his church and playing volleyball, tennis on the weekends when my niece and his son had their engagement announcement party and then playing golf on Friday morning the wedding a few months later. At the reception, I could've sworn that it was a Catholic function after a couple of hours and some of the "older guests" had done their niceties and gone home to catch the weekend shows on Fox News. I hope Sarah forgets her shoes and has to borrow a pair four sizes too big for her crusty, withered hoofs, which we have seen her do before. But she sure as hell ain't gonna miss no photo op though, is she?

      Like a plague.

"Birther Don" Trump will be there, too, also, you know, like all of the other *good christians* promoting their ghost-written books or themselves.

One of these days George Zimmerman is going to be in the wrong town, one where he is not considered white.

That creepy GIF should be titled 'The Essence of Zimmerman'. It's disturbing... as is he.

If Georgie-boy hadn't been carrying a gun, there's no way in hell he would have gotten out of his truck and Travon Martin would be alive today.

It's not "Florida City." It's Sanford, Florida, one of many Florida cities.

I wonder what gave the Sanford town watch the brilliant idea that they shouldn't pack heat while on duty? A little too late for Trayvon Martin and who knows how many other young, innocent black boys whose names we'll never know?

That gif gives me goosebumps. I don't believe in a hell, but if there is one, he'd be there already.

o/t but on sphash's blog someone says trig is in palm desert with todd's parents being raised by them there. there is a faye palin in palm desert.
also someone made a comment about trig meaning tri/three.
that trig, tripp, tristan all have "tri" in their names.

my two cents-trip is short for triple/triplets/etc.
trig is short for trigonometry which is the mathematical study of triangles and their lengths and relationships............so, trip, trig...............and who?

Wait... Is this a Tri-ck question? Argh, I know, lame. Palm Desert is a nice area, compared to Dillingham. Not as nice as Palm Springs, but still some nice golf courses and great weather. Nice, private gated communities to hide extra grand kids if one happens to have one or four.

"Trig" does not mean "three". TRI is the word for "three". How f-ing stupid are the pee-bots, anyway? "Dysfunctional" doesn't mean "fun" just because it has the letters "fun" in it.

It wasn't a peebot but someone was pointing out that Tripp and trig and "Tristan" all have "tri" in the names and trip is short for triple and trig is short gor trigonometry which is about three sided triangles so the thought was that there are three babies and this is skank's effed up name game.

I know the consensus is trig is Tri G but when I read the comment it started me thinking in another direction just trying to get to the truth-all far fetched but there must be something missing to not have gotten to the bottom of who birthed trig and how many babies there are!!

To: Anonymous8:18 PM - I'm glad that you brought up the "Tri" issue.

I remember reading some time ago that Mercedes referred to Tripp as "Tripplebear" when he was a baby.

I totally agree with cheeriogirl about there being three babies - A caption from a picture Mercede posted on her facebook page December 11, 2009 has bothered me since I first saw it- using the affectionate name "Tripplebear" - could have used Trippibear or Trippybear but Tripplebear? Meaning triple = 3 - too far a stretch? maybe yes - maybe no

I thought that Zimmerman was NOT part of the local neighborhood watch group but saw himself as a self-appointed member. I also thought that the neighborhood watch group members were not supposed to carry guns while trotting around making the world safer for ??????

" ...residents acting under the authority of neighborhood watch may not carry a firearm or pursue someone they deem suspicious..."

A good rule, that probably most sane people would take for granted. Neighborhood watch seems to work well in my area. I think most people find it a useful and reassuring addition to normal police patrols.

The problem is people like Zimmerman think rules don't apply to them. And, unfortunately, that sort of person can be aggressive, with or without the mantle of the neighborhood watch program.

"Volunteers" can be great, until they are not. And that applies to all kinds of programs, like the people "helping" out at the library kiddie programs, etc. We have to try to screen volunteers as best we can, because we need them.

Zimmerman without a gun would have mostly likely not even have approached Trayvon. Zimmerman has dangerous mental problems, but quite likely would be able to pass a quick assessment if the law required one to have a gun. Or, of course, he is more than capable of getting a gun illegally.

In the end, neither rules or laws solve the problem of Zimmerman. We have to wait until he kills again, then incarcerate him.
