Cracker Barrel pulls some Duck Dynasty merchandise off shelves over concerns it "might offend guests." Isn't Cracker Barrel one of those places where conservatives really like to shop? Why yes it is. Update!

Courtesy of Fox News:

Cracker Barrel said it pulled some Duck Dynasty merchandise from its stores over concerns it might offend guests, a move that infuriated thousands of customers and confused many others.

"We removed selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests while we evaluate the situation," Cracker Barrel said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

The full statement read:

“Cracker Barrel’s mission is Pleasing People. We operate within the ideals of fairness, mutual respect and equal treatment of all people. These ideals are the core of our corporate culture. We continue to offer Duck Commander products in our stores. We removed selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests while we evaluate the situation. We continually evaluate the products we offer and will continue to do so.”

Cracker Barrel's statement led to confusion among some customers who wondered if the restaurant was removing Duck Dynasty products owned by A&E or products owned by the Robertson family's Duck Commander business.

Cracker Barrel did not return phone calls seeking clarification or comment.

By the way Cracker Barrel is a member of ALEC:

Cracker Barrel is a member of right-wing front group the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), according to the website ALEC Exposed. ALEC has been facing an exodus of corporate members in recent months, with at least thirty groups -- including food companies Kraft, Wendy's, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and PepsiCo -- having renounced their membership amid criticism over ALEC’s involvement in the proliferation of “stand your ground” laws, voter ID legislation, and other problematic bills. Cracker Barrel is reportedly a member of ALEC’s Commerce, Insurance and Economic Development Task Force, which, according to the website PR Watch, "is the primary source of anti-worker and anti-consumer legislation such as the ‘ Paycheck Protection’ and ‘ Right to Work’ Acts and other ‘model’ bills that limit workers' rights and drain labor unions of resources for protecting employees, undermine consumer protections, favor the Wall Street financial agenda, and limit the ability to cap exorbitant interest rates on credit cards and big bank fees."

So you know this is going to cause all kinds of friction within the Right Wing fringe.

Boy this Duck Dynasty thing is causing me to run very low on popcorn.

Update: Looks like Cracker Barrel has caved under pressure from the crackers who like their homophobia and chicken and dumplings just the way they are:

Less than 48 hours after Cracker Barrel announced plans to pull Duck Dynasty items off its shelves in the wake of cast member Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments, the Southern country store and restaurant chain has reversed its decision.

Cracker Barrel's reversal of its former position was posted this morning to Facebook, following a flurry of negative responses from customers and fans who showed support to the patriarch of the "Duck Dynasty" family.

"When we made the decision to remove and evaluate certain Duck Dynasty items, we offended many of our loyal customers. Our intent was to avoid offending, but that's just what we've done," the company wrote. "You flat out told us we were wrong. We listened."

"People weren't shy. They wrote, called and took to social media," company spokesman Jeff Eller told ABC News about the company's decision to go back on its original pledge to ax "selected products" from its stores.

Yeah I personally did not hold out much hope that an organization which works hand in hand with ALEC was going to be able to hold onto the high ground for long.  So color me unsurprised.

Funny you should say that...because NOW I understand why skanky, stinky Sarah Palin is all cozy with this crew:

      - Phil told Men’s Health that there’s “not a lot of hygiene going on in their family,” and that they only brush their teeth once a day, never comb their hair, do not floss their teeth, rarely shower or wash their face, and do not use deodorant.-

Just imagine what lives in their beards!

Sarah is a dirty person. She gravitates to other dirty people. Makes me gag.

-The ‘Duck Dynasty’ men claim to be clean and sober, but they all have a serious snuff habit that is never shown on screen, according to a recent feature in Men’s Health.-

-The Robertsons happily shill for their network, A&E, posing for press photos and doing promotion, but behind the scenes, Phil says, “It’s spiritual warfare … A lot of depravity and a lot of heathens and a lot of the evil one.”-

Well you better stock up on the popcorn between storms up there in Alaska. I read that the Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket A&E headquarters in New York City on Monday. That is the day that a petition will be presented to A&E about the Duck show. Westboro wants in on all the Duck publicity too.

Nobody wants to be associated with those crazies. Even Sarah Palin has denounced them (and actually called upon the government to stop them from exercising their freedom of speech, but Westboro won at the Supreme Court level in an 8-1 decision).

Good thing I stocked up on popcorn. Having an ice storm here and no one is going anywhere in the Great State of Maine.

  7. Keep in mind that the news releases saying "we are removing _________'s merchandise from our shelves because we care so much about values and morals and our customers" are only for show and only for so long as a corporation thinks they might actually lose money by making the merchandise available to buy.

When the media furor dies down and it looks like selling the merchandise might be profitable again and not impact the bottom line in a negative way, it will be right back on the shelves. Paula Deen items are all over the Walmart where I live.

...The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter whether or not you think homosexuality is a sin. Let me say that again. It does not matter if you think homosexuality is a sin, or if you think it is simply another expression of human love. It doesn’t matter. Why doesn’t it matter? Because people are dying. Kids are literally killing themselves because they are so tired of being rejected and dehumanized that they feel their only option left is to end their life. As a Youth Pastor, this makes me physically ill. And as a human, it should make you feel the same way. So, I’m through with the debate.

When faced with the choice between being theologically correct…as if this is even possible…and being morally responsible, I’ll go with morally responsible every time. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian during World War II. He firmly held the theological position of nonviolence. He believed that complete pacifism was theologically correct. And yet, in the midst of the war, he conspired to assassinate Adolf Hitler; to kill a fellow man. Why? Because in light of what he saw happening to the Jews around him by the Nazis, he felt that it would be morally irresponsible not to. Between the assassination of Hitler and nonviolence, he felt the greater sin would be nonviolence.

We are past the time for debate. We no longer have the luxury to consider the original meaning of Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church. We are now faced with the reality that there are lives at stake. So whatever you believe about homosexuality, keep it to yourself. Instead, try telling a gay kid that you love him and you don’t want him to die. Try inviting her into your church and into your home and into your life. Anything other than that simply doesn’t matter.

So a self-identified fundamentalist bible-thumping redneck, who is also the star of his own reality television show, says out loud, in a very high-profile public fashion, what we already knew he thinks about same-sex relationships. Understandably there is an outcry about this. The network that produces his show responds by suspending him. Hordes of the duck guy's fans lose their minds on social media, enraged that his right to free speech has been violated (even though it hasn't, but that's another article). So here we are. Some of us are saying, "What does it matter what he says? We already knew what he thought." Why shouldn't we just dismiss such ridiculous, ignorant comments, especially when there are so many other urgent matters pressing upon us? What if it's just a publicity stunt, designed to increase ratings? Why dignify such nonsense with a response? Please continue below the fold for the answers to those questions.

When You Defend Phil Robertson, Here's What You're Really Defending

...As a side note, it's remarkable how often these things come as a package. Robertson's sincere doctrinal view about the sinfulness of homosexuality comes packaged with animus toward gays and retrograde views about blacks and non-Christians. It's almost as though social conservatism is primarily fueled by a desire to protect the privileges of what was once a straight, white Christian in-group, rather than by sincere religious convictions.

You might recall that conservatives are currently trying to figure out what to do about the fact that the Republican Party performs quite poorly with the growing share of voters who are not white, straight Christians. They think some of it has to do with economic issues. But then they're scratching their heads, trying to figure out how Mitt Romney lost the Asian American vote 3-to-1 even though, by Republican "maker-vs.-taker" metrics, Asian Americans are disproportionately likely to be "makers."

Non-whites and non-Christians and gays keep getting the sense that, even setting aside policy, conservatives and Republicans just don't care for them. The "Duck Dynasty" episode, with Ted Cruz and others rushing out to defend Robertson's honor, is just another example of why.

The Religious Right Ought to Thank A&E for Suppressing a Heretic

The Duck Dynasty imbroglio has already demonstrated that the Religious Right does not believe anyone beside themselves has First Amendment free speech rights. And do not expect any time soon that religious conservatives will clue in to a little bit of cosmic glue called “causation.”

They’re also not very good at developing cogent arguments, but then that is only to be expected of a group that does not have one single fact on their side. It is inevitable, I suppose, that you are going to reach. Take Matt Barber of Liberty Counsel Action, who complained on World Net Daily the other day that “truth is ‘hate’ to those who hate truth.” I’m sure he thought this was a clever turn of phrase, but an argument consists of far more than a clever title.

Barber claims that Phil Robertson is in trouble “for candidly summarizing, in a recent interview with GQ Magazine, the millennia-long ‘Love the sinner, hate the sin’ biblical stance on homosexual practice.”

The only problem is, that nowhere in the Bible does it say to love the sinner, hate the sin. It just isn’t there, not any more than is God helps those who help themselves” or “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” As Rev. Patrick S. Cheng has observed, “Although God clearly ‘hates’ sin in the Bible (sane in Hebrew and miseo in the Greek), God never demands that we carry out this hatred on God’s behalf.”

Barber ought to focus on what Jesus actually said: focus on your own sins, not the sins of others (See Matt. 7:5; Luke 6:42). Nowhere, for example, do you see evidence that Jesus hated any sin though he did say you have to hate your family in order to follow him (Luke 14:25-27). He just talked about love. Love even your enemies.

As Rev. Cheng went on to say,

    From back in June,

    http://adage.com/article/the-media-guy/duck-dynasty-jumped-shark-time-writing/242756/

"....But the shark jumping actually happened well before then. During the season premiere, Uncle Si whipped out a pistol and "fired" blindly into a log because he thought he'd heard a rat—something no responsible gun owner (or someone pretending to be a responsible gun owner) would ever do. (I say "fired" because it seemed like the gun wasn't actually shot and that sound-effects were added during editing.)

All of which is to say the Robertsons, in an attempt to stay interesting, risk ruining the brand. (Let's not even discuss the raft of show-themed products—from bandages to dog costumes.)

Viewers of the "Real Housewives" franchise would quickly tune out if the women started discussing fine literature or sitting peacefully through dinner. And viewers of "Duck Dynasty" may quickly lose patience if the characters are continually put into situations that are too obviously contrived or start to behave in manners inconsistent with the "reality" we expect.

Put another way, A&E might need to shake up the writer's room a bit."

Shaken & stirred. I wonder how well they will handle the tsunami of blow-back coming from tell-all's about just how much these characters have been artificially created to separate as many bubbas from as much of their cash as quickly as possible. People are going all-in with their real lives to protect and defend pretend characters whose goal is to fleece them.

.....When my 6 months passes, I plan to re-file a FOIA request and I hope that you will expedite the production of documents. Until then I hope you will investigate these allegations regarding Todd Palin, David Chaney, and Shailey Tripp. The American people need to have confirmation that Todd Palin was a pimp. We need confirmation of Ms. Tripp’s story regarding Todd and David Chaney. We need to know why Homeland Security withheld documents based on an “enforcement proceeding” that clearly did not exist. You are perhaps the only person that could oversee an investigation and expose the truth. Shailey Tripp has been brave enough to speak out. Surely the DHS can have the courage to admit the truth.

I am beyond disgusted with all of it. Leave it to "Good Tidings And Great Joy" attention whore to hook up with likewise fake Phil Robinson. Does anyone believe, except for the seriously intellectually challenged, that they are true Christians? What a PILE, as well as French weighing in as Bristol.

Seriously, WTF. They're serving a god all right, but not the one they want you to believe. Three guesses, first two don't count! Any TRUE Christian can see right through it.

John: Will one of you please tell me what you mean by 'take our country back'? To the days of GWBush? You have to be friggin' kidding!!!

We were in the worst financial shape since the depression when President Bush turned over the keys to the White House and country to President Obama (for his first term)!

Republican rule is the last thing we need! Plus, your calling for Sarah Palin to run is a riot! She'd never do it and she'd never get past the primary even if she stuck her nose out there. She's retarded, on booze or drugs and cannot handle ANY kind of pressure. Ask the guys that dealt w/her when she ran (and LOST!) in the second position w/McCain. McCain wouldn't even let her do interviews on radio or TV (by herself) after the disaster w/Couric!

She's racist, evil, a fraud and liar on top of not being capable for a 'role' in anything! (except perhaps a 'roll' in the hay w/an old, fat Republican white guy on Viagra! The young fellas wouldn't want her!)

While Robertson’s entitled to cling to whatever backwater bullshit myths he wants, what he shouldn’t be not allowed to do — and what others shouldn’t either — is let those myths dictate the terms of how people are treated or mistreated in a supposedly enlightened culture. We’re not, I realize this, but America should be well past the point where falling back on a very specific interpretation of the Bible makes it acceptable to claim moral and spiritual dominion over someone and to essentially persecute that person.
