President Obama highlights commonalities with Pope Francis. Oh, the Right Wing Catholics are going to LOVE that!

Courtesy of the LA Times:

When a White House speechwriter turned in a draft of a major speech on economic policy this month, President Obama sent it back with an unusual instruction: Add a reference to the pope.

The final version of the speech quoted directly from Pope Francis' recent letter to the faithful: "How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?" he said.

The citation marked a notable development in Obama's complex and sometimes confrontational relationship with the Roman Catholic Church: After several years of high-profile clashes with U.S. bishops, Obama is seizing the chance to highlight common ground with the bishop of Rome.

Quoting the pope isn't likely to yield direct electoral dividends for Obama's party — the once-vaunted "Catholic vote" largely disappeared long ago. But in a string of effusive praise, the president has made clear he sees the pope as a like-minded thinker and potentially useful ally in a crucial battle of ideas, particularly on the importance of shrinking the gulf between rich and poor, a subject Obama has pushed repeatedly but with limited success.

I tell you Pope Francis could be the best thing to happen to the progressives in this country in a long time.

Or he could be a two faced backstabbing pontiff just waiting to drop the bomb on the liberals the minute we drop our guard. I'm still dealing with some trust issues.

However it goes without saying that right now he is truly screwing with the heads of the Religious Right in this country, who now have a powerful representative of their faith peeing all over their  version of Christianity.

Gotta love that!

If he pisses off the fake "religious right" and they call him Communist and socialist... he's ok plus I did like his comment so true especially in our fake "jesus is the reason for the season" this comment

"How can it be that it is not a news item when an elderly homeless person dies of exposure, but it is news when the stock market loses 2 points?"
Several homeless died the beginning of dec b/c of the cold snap (from Alasssska) and it does not make the news...
but DD did... you betcha and so did the screeching hobag.
I think that is what Pope Francis is seeing the hypocrisy of the "religious right" and giving voice and so is POTUS.
Let them twist the Popes words, shall we?
Let them "twist in the wind" and gag on a maggot their religious hypocrisy against society, women, the poor.
That is what the Pope is opening the eyes too, and Obama also, too... Sarah no so much.
She needs to be a world wide joke so when she is arrested it will make world wide news.
And the whole world will be happy.

  2. I’m delighted that our president has a like-minded pope to compliment and reinforce his efforts.

I’m delighted that greedy conservatives who hid behind religion are having strokes.

  3. I think Pope Francis is the real deal. He's continued along the same path he took in Argentina. He's shaking up the political system in this country and I think that will be good for "moving forward" instead of the tea party "taking back" our country.

And even though the media is yammering on about how 2013 was such a fail for our lovely president, here's the details of how it wasn't:

  11. You're completely right in withholding your trust, Gryphen. This happened in September:

Pope Francis excommunicates Australian priest “ 'because of his public teaching on the ordination of women', which are grounds for automatic excommunication. Fr Reynolds is also a supporter of same-sex marriage and has attended rallies in favour of changing the definition of marriage. He has even reportedly presided at same-sex ceremonies."

The comment section at that article gives you a good idea of the Catholic fundamentalist point of view, still prevalent.

Catholic doctrine is pretty explicit on the issues that Francis is blurring the lines on, and they are dogmatic gold for the GOP. The Catholic church has been co-opted by the GOP, because the GOP platform contains wedge issues like abortion, gay marriage, and women's rights to get people to vote against their own best interests. It's like Francis is moving to the center to get elected, then the hammer comes down once in office. I too, welcome the remarks, but talk is cheap.
