Young mother turned away at Christian charity has her Christmas saved by Atheist group.

Tiffany Wait and little one.
Courtesy of Press Republican:

Tiffany Wait said she, her husband and their 7-month-old baby went to Bible Baptist Church's Toy Shop on Christmas morning to get gifts for their child, but were met with animosity because Wait did not want to give her baby to the volunteers while she selected gifts.

"I am poor and would not be able to celebrate Christmas this year without their charity," she said. "I went last year and it was a life saver. This year, however, I was treated shockingly bad."

Wait said her baby doesn't like strangers and she'd prefer to be with him. She said the volunteer said it has to be done that way, or the family wouldn't be able to participate.

"I stood there, fighting back tears and asked, 'You would turn a baby away on Christmas?'" said Wait.

The volunteers held their ground, and according to Wait, one woman tried to forcibly take her child.

Eventually, a woman brought a toy out to Wait.

But Wait soon took to the internet, posting her story on various social media sites, and that is when Oklahoma Atheists' Director Red McCall and members of his group set out to save Christmas.

"We had several people donate things and send her money through a PayPal," said McCall. Christmas is a secular holiday now, according to McCall. He said everyone deserves to have a happy holiday.

"The Christians turned my baby and I away, and a group of atheists showed us compassion, kindness, and charity," Wait said. "They brought us toys, dinner, gift cards, donated money and really saved our holiday."

Okay I am not sure what that whole "Let us hold your baby while you look for gifts" thing is all about, but it seems a little odd to me.

Perhaps the young mother misunderstood, or their was some safety concern? I don't know, but clearly it could have been handled differently.

I am glad the Atheists came to her rescue, though to be fair I am sure there were plenty of Christian organization that would have offered help as well.

By the way the head pastor of Bible Baptist said they tried to contact the mother but failed in that attempt. Hopefully that is true, and is not simply a case of CYA.

Christmas should be for everybody, and this Atheist group demonstrated that the spirit of giving is certainly NOT something that simply belongs to the religious.

P.S. By the way if somebody had tried to grab my baby out of my arms what they would have received for Christmas would have been a gaping head wound. Just saying.

I wondered also,too...WHY was it so goddamn important they grab that kid away????
And then no present? Well I hope they lost her as a member and lots of people saw this all over the place.
Giving and sharing should be ALL YEAR around not just at "The Holidays" but b/c we've been so programmed to buy, buy, buy at XMAS parents feel like they are neglecting their kids if they can't buy that flippin xbox or itune or whatnot.
      Its sick.

When my kids were little, and I was having a hard time juggling two kids, the toilet, some wet pants and big diaper bag, someone offered to hold my baby. NO WAY! I have no idea who the person is, but these days, I would not hand my baby to a priest, to a stranger or anyone else-- not even in a church.

I have a feeling they might have wanted all the kids in the church's nursery area so they didn't have to worry about kids hurting themselves in the "store". I can understand feeling that there's liability in the "store" part because maybe it was set up hastily and not child-safe. On the other hand, they should never forcibly try to take a child away from its parent.

    1. Fine. But this was a 7 month old being held by his mother. No danger here.

Their hand the kid over or no toys policy sucks and I have a feeling will be abandoned come next Christmas.

And I do think the pastor of the Bible Baptist Church is trying to cover his ass looking to make it right with this family. I hope the family tells him where to shove his bible.

The pastor certainly couldn't have tried too hard since the atheists found her quite easily and went above and beyond.

"Tiffany Wait said she, her husband and their 7-month-old baby went to Bible Baptist Church's Toy Shop on Christmas morning…”

""I went last year [to the church's Christmas Toy Shop] and it was a life saver."

The baby's only 7 months old, not old enough to have a ruined Christmas. And last year, the baby wasn't born.

Call me Scrooge but something seems off about the story and the family may need more help than they can get from a Christmas toy drive.

319, I agree. Most 7 month old babies would be happy with only the wrapping paper. This family tried to pull something. If babies weren't allowed in the gift area, one parent could have gone in without him.

it doesn't say if she has other children to shop for. Perhaps she went last year to get a gift for her husband.....

I call hoax on this story also.

Not sure why she did the charity thing a second year when she had the child. She said they gave her xmas stuff the year before. What part of taking care of herself and family did she not get? One year, yes, two years, hmmm, get a job maybe?

Maybe she worked at Walmart or McDonald's making the minimum wage and could not afford her rent, let alone anything for Christmas.

And maybe you Dear Sarah/Bristol/Troll should actually read the words of Jesus and do not judge this young woman who is doing the best she can in this age of the greedy capitalists.

If Mrs. Wait was so poor last year that she had to rely on xtian charity to provide her xmas gifts, then why, oh why did she think it was okay to procreate?

Perhaps the R's in Oklahoma closed down the Planned Parenthood Clinic giving this woman no access to birth control. Perhaps her birth control failed and she decided to have the child.

Maybe you should go and fuck yourself 4:29 and mind your own business. Sorry to say that; I was only exercising my right of free speech, eh?

The rest of the article is interesting
    _______________
A member of Bible Baptist Church, Sheyla Clemmons, went by Wait’s house later that day to apologize.

"She brought us a bunch of Christmas stuff," said Wait. "She said they shouldn't have done that and that there are no 'rules.'"

Bible Baptist Head Pastor Tim Hayes said he and his church members attempted to go to Wait's house five times Christmas night, but were never able to get in touch with her. He said he intends to continue his efforts to contact her.

"I'm sure she has a very legitimate reason for feeling the way she does," said Hayes. "I regret what happened. We are certainly not in the business of creating that type of atmosphere on Christmas for any individual."

Hayes said he plans investigate the incident further.

    _________

Good on Sheila for trying to be a nice neighbor. What's with the pastor? Five times and he intends to continue trying? Something tells me the Wait's aren't wanting to hear what he has to say. There's a thin line between cya and stalking.

I wonder if it has something to do with the volunteers checking for signs of Child Abuse?

I don't know- I'm grasping at straws. I know it's being overly optimistic, but I'd like to think the people working at a charity (note not fundraising, the part where they give it away) event- of whatever faith- are going to be at heart "good people."

I also bet they wouldn't have tried so hard to get in contact with her if they hadn't gotten wind of a media stink.

Overall, the writing of this article seems... odd. It makes me think that the writer wrote the article, then decided, "I need to blow this out of proportion and incite hot debate for Real World Anti-Hero Atheists becoming Comically Exaggerated Super Hero."

Kinda like when you mock someone by giving them an over exaggerated compliment.

Like maybe this (or the Author) has some connection to The Onion...

Or maybe the "christians" got off on the power of being the "haves" of the moment. It happens all to often. No need to grasp at straws. When the media exposes "good christians" and their reprehensible behavior, it is time for some quick cya.
I'm not bitter, just judging based on my own experiences with "good christians".

TIFFANY WAIT (aka Tiffany Whovian on her newly updated Facebook page) IS A LONGTIME SELF-DESCRIBED ATHEIST. SO WHY WOULD SHE GO TO ANY CHURCH OF A CHRISTIAN FAITH TO ASK FOR CHARITY TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF A PERSON SHE DOESN’T BELIEVE IN?
I am her former mother-in-law. The story doesn’t mention it but she also has an 8-year-old daughter whose father is my son. She is a former Jerry Springer guest (the instigator and not the victim). She has always been the conceited type who would do or say anything to see her name in print. Since she is a devout atheist, there is the definite possibility that this was a pre-planned event specifically designed to promote her as the poor victim in a salacious, attention garnering, media-headlining event, which it appears has worked. While there may have been missteps by the members of Bible Baptist Church, it is evident that it was not intentional on their part. I do not believe the same can be said for Mrs. Wait - - or is it Mrs. White or Mrs. Whovian??
For anyone who questions her non-believer status, I have copies of comments she posted on a Facebook page on 12/4 that I would be happy to share.
