This comparison comes from the Guttmacher Institute, which finds that states passed 205 abortion restrictions between 2011 and 2013, more than the 189 laws passed between 2001 and 2010. Nearly half of the laws - 45 percent - fell into three categories: targeted regulations of abortion providers, bans on abortions after 20 weeks and restrictions on medical abortions. "States enacted 93 measures in these four categories from 2011 through 2013, compared with 22 during the previous decade," the Guttmacher analysis finds.
What made 2010 such a boom year for abortion restrictions? It's hard to pinpoint a particular reason, but a few factors do stand out. First, Republicans took control of lots of state legislatures in the 2010 midterm elections, allowing them to pass more restrictions than was politically feasible in the past. The Affordable Care Act also ignited a fight over abortion policy, particularly whether federal funds would help pay for abortions (when Americans used their tax subsidies to purchase health insurance coverage). That fight spilled over to state legislatures - the ones that Republicans had recently come to control - and many passed laws restricting insurance coverage of abortion.
But remember, there is NO War on Women.
This is the kind of thing that should be driving women to the polls by the millions in 2014. And hopefully it will.
God, Guns and Babehs!
ReplyDeleteWomen being turned back into slaves faster than ever in our history. WHY are they allowing this to happen ?? Women, in general, have the most to loose here, more so than ever before, yet these laws are being passed in record numbers... WHY ???
ReplyDeleteThis is why it is important to vote out these Republicans and teabaggers at the state level.
ReplyDeleteOur "wonderful" King Rick Synder the liar, governor of Michigan is a fine example. The Dems stayed home last election. So far King Ricky has managed to break the unions with right to work and the legislature is requiring women to pay more for insurance just in case they need an abortion.
Get out an vote them out in 2014!!!!
We Dems did not stay home. We voted against the Emergency Managers, and got a law passed to end them. What did king Rick do? Why, he turned to Stamas and his GOP legislature and crooked his little finger, and they had a bill all ready to ram through before Christmas. It's hard to fight when they cheat. But we will fight this man.
DeleteWhat I meant Sally, was if the Dems had not stayed home, King Rick would not have been governor to begin with, Same happened with Engler.
DeleteThere is a number missing from your headline. Seriously man, do you just not care anymore?
ReplyDeleteot What date did Alaska become a state?

DeleteSomeone was reminiscing about this on another website and it is too precious. It shows how hopeful the "P's" were that Mrs. Palin would run in 2012 for POTUS and how many of them we no longer see on her support websites because she totally dissed them and stole their money. There are but a dozen now that carry her flag and still believe that she's going to run for something but wow, I love the delusion in these comments and how the folks here at IM have gotten the biggest opportunity ever to say "I TOLD YOU SO!"

No woman ever rudely insisted on a right to tell me how to manage my testicles, and thus fair play and good manners enjoin me from telling any of them how to manage their uteri. Seems simple as that to me.
ReplyDeleteWomen are rising up & there are more of us. 2014 is the start of the rising tide: http://vimeo.com/m/45539176
