By the way that is Tim Gunn of Project Runway fame, in case you were wondering.
You know people can wave their Bibles and rail against marriage equality all they want, but like it or not it is coming. There may be bumps and delays long the road, but the destination is really no longer in doubt.

ReplyDeleteYou are certainly correct about that in the long run.
My biggest fear, however, is about the backlash that inevitably will come from it. No, I am not saying it (marriage equality) is a bad thing. I am merely saying that the bastards who are against it will tend to get more violent as their fears are shoved in their faces and I am afraid that we may begin to see even more occurrences here such as the beating/murders so common in some parts of homophobic Africa or the rape/murders becoming more prevalent in S. Africa where people actually are stupid enough to think it will "turn" a lesbian.
Personally, I feel we are entering a period in which the dangers to the LGBT community will become even greater.
I am personally hoping that those of us in favor of this change will be even more vigilant and stand up for our friends when necessary.
I live in Indiana and I dread the beginning of every legislative year here. We have a legislature that works from January to April or May. Unfortunately we have a Republican super majority and our governor is Tea Party member Mike, I say shut it down, Pence. Last year they made right-to-work-for-less their pet project to pass. Hurt the unions, working people, and middle class. Two years previous it was teachers and public education. Tax payers all over the state are now paying for vouchers for Catholic and Christian education at private schools. Can you imagine the outcry if some Islamic schools can get established and then ask for vouchers? Well, the legislature this year have put a big bull's eye on same-sex marriage. The legislature is going to put it on the ballot in the fall of 2014 so that all the religious people show up to vote for the Repubiscums again. Can't have people having rights protected as in the Constitution now can we? Talk about brain drain. I hope enough people who have relatives, friends, and neighbors vote it down but hey this is a red state. I can dream.
ReplyDeleteOne word.
DeleteUtah.
Pence can try but chances are the Supremes will get involved.
This isn't going to end until the Supreme Court knocks down every attempt at the State level to deny equal rights to all Americans.
If only the Repub1%can'ts could take all that energy, focus and single-mindedness and channel to to something useful, like hunger, poverty or climate change.
I have to point out that in Russia and I believe, Uganda, the newer Anti Gay laws are a direct result of a Right Wing AMERICAN Fundie preacher lobbying the Government in those countries. I wish I had paid better attention to the details but I did not. I think I was in shock after reading that.

Yep, that was our own Rick Warren, you know, the one that worked with our own POTUS! No wonder he felt so empowered to do his dirty work.
DeleteLoved Tim Gunn a lot before and now I ADORE him! He is such a class act and seems like a very kind gentleman.
ReplyDeleteWe should demand that the IRS immediately disallow any deductions for religious groups that engage in political work. Oh, they already do????
ReplyDeleteBut they don't enforce it.
DeleteI am waiting for the IRS to grow a pair and finally yank tax-exempt status from political churches.
Ha-ha! I love Tim Gunn's comment. Very cute.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting, Gryphen.
Nothing more ironic than the absolute truth. I love how some people manage to handle things with humor and class.
