MSPs voted by 105 to 18 in favour of the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill.
The Scottish government said the move was the right thing to do but Scotland's two main churches were opposed to it.
The first gay and lesbian weddings could take place this autumn.
Religious and belief bodies can "opt in" to perform same-sex marriages.
Ministers said no part of the religious community would be forced to hold such ceremonies in churches.
Really? Scotland?
Isn't this the land full of hard drinking men wearing kilts with no underwear?
How could they be more progressive than America?
But they are, because we are a nation under the influence of a religion that stifles love and restricts happiness.
Great pic, very 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'
ReplyDeleteCome on Gryphen we all know it isn't the country but one political party that keeps America from being progressive.
ReplyDelete".. because we are a nation under the influence of a religion that stifles love and restricts happiness."
ReplyDeleteI will add "and has too much political power."
and Scotsmen are so much more than hard-drinking, kilt-wearing commandos.....they are the inventors, explorers, and cross-cultural marry-ers of the world. come on, don't you have a wee bit of Scot in you? And don't you get drawn to the sound of the bagpipes?
ReplyDeleteWay to go, Scotland!
My mom's family emigrated to the USA from the highlands of Scotland in the early 1900's. Her cousins swear I got the bulk of the "Scottish Genes" in how I can handle money! The BBC series "Monarch of the Glenn"

pulls at my heart for a return trip the highlands. It also inspired me to wearing my Utilikilt pretty much 24/7.
As a man, you have not experienced freedom until you have worn a kilt...I love how the redneck boys here in Alabama react when they confront me on wearing a kilt. Especially when I tell them, "I'm wearing a kilt. If I had on underwear, it would be a dress." Then I'll add they should try it, their girlfriends will love them forever!
My husband wears a kilt. He wore it around the High Sierra Music Festival, and people poured out of their campspots and tents to talk to him about it. and admire it. I'm working on getting more men into kilts at the festival.
DeleteThanks for mentioning the utilikilt. Aren't they cool!?
A few years ago, my birthday gift was a tandem jump at our local Parachute Center. While our group was hanging out, a skydiver with a group vacationing from Schotland did a jump not in the usual coveralls, but wearing the kilt and YEAH! swinging in the breeze! Needless to say, he got a huge ovation when he landed, and a Happy Birthday chorus from all of his buddies in which we all joined!
DeleteThe Scots are nothing if not sensible --- and caring.
ReplyDeleteI love the phrase "a country under the influence".
ReplyDeleteAnd its a very loud influence. Of course, the powers that be would like us to believe that the homophobia is just good ole American hate and fear of the "other" and not grifters in conservative media and hypocritical psalm singing sonofabitches making money. And the money comes from groups who could give less than a shit about religion. Its all about power and control.
Bravo Scotland! We are trying to throw off the veil of idiots in this country and join the twenty-first century. It will take some time, but we are trying to drag our asses towards social enlightenment everyday.
Aye, laddie! Love your photo! I am one-quarter Scotch, aye, and I'm loving the thought of a double-sporran wedding, worn over a kilt in the Clan Biscuitbarrel tartan, aye!
ReplyDeleteas me grandfather used to say, "scotch is a drink"
DeleteThree cheers for Scotland!

Deletepoor girls in the stripe suits, they should know better,

The title of the pic could be very Christmasy
Delete"Ho, Ho, Ho"
I see the pic was taken before Brisket and Farrah ruined their faces with plastic surgery.
Scotland has always been away ahead of the USA in terms of a commitment to the health, education and welfare of its people. I'm very happy this happened and I will get over my dismay it took so bloody long.
ReplyDeleteIt's one thing, lagging behind Scotland, the country of The Declaration of Arbroath, 1320, embodying the Scots' dedication to freedom and justice. Lagging behind South Africa, who effectively made gay marriage legal in 2005, is another.
Hubby and I were in Scotland six months ago to visit his 86 y.o. Mum, brother and Auntie. His home village is located south of Edinburgh in the Borders. I could write volumes about the experience. Instead I'll say beautiful farms and ranches, ecologically sound practices (we saw a large wind farm on the road to Edinburgh!) and well made and insulated homes and businesses. Those homes are filled with warm, intelligent people who are very good at the art of conversation - something sorely lacking here..
ReplyDeleteWe hope to visit again in 2015 - perhaps retire there since Hubby is British citizen. Great memories :-)
A country where two men wearing kilts can marry each other? I'm all for it!
ReplyDeleteI never imagined I'd see legalized marriage equality in my lifetime. It makes sense on so many levels. Love is Love.
