Of course, we bonded over the former half-term governor. He reached out to me when I was wildly exposed among journalists for refusing to believe her stories at face value. And what we bonded over was not a mutual revulsion at her politics. What we bonded over was the abject failure of the American press to say what had to be said about this preposterous, delusional maniac plucked from deserved obscurity by John McCain to be a heartbeat away from a potential presidency.
Her candidacy was a total farce; a disgrace; an outrage to American democracy; an appalling act of cynicism. Joe saw the creation of this media figure as a continuation of the Ailes recipe for optic politics, and he was appalled as so many mainstream outlets nonetheless insisted on taking this joke seriously.
So he went to do what others wouldn’t: to find the real truth about Palin, and he came closer than almost anyone.
I don’t see his last book as some kind of aberration, though it was obviously not in the same league as The Selling Of The President or Fatal Vision. I saw them all as a continuing crusade for a journalism that takes a stand, that welcomes obloquy if that’s what it takes to get to the truth, and that cares about our democracy. He would never have aimed for the “view from nowhere” or the facile mantra that one leading Washington journalist gave me when asked to explain why they hadn’t sought any proof for the fantastic Trig story that Palin spun: “Why ask questions when you know you won’t get an answer?” For Joe that was pathetic. As indeed it was.
There were a number of things that surprised me about Joe McGinniss.
His incredible love of Alaska, his love of strong drink, his tenacity, and his ability to befriend all manner of different people.
He was good friends, and I mean really good friends, with people from all walks of life.
At a party I attended in his rented house on Lake Lucille I discussed politics with an oil company spokesman, a mountain guide, an out of town journalist, and a few fellow Alaskans who had met and befriended Joe when he wrote "Going to Extremes."
Yet the friendships that he shared with Roger Ailes and Andrew Sullivan were perhaps the two which really demonstrated his capacity to welcome into his life people of quite extreme differences.
Ailes of course did not like Sarah Palin at all, something which I learned well before the public at large (Though Joe swore me to secrecy.), and only used her to attract viewers and to rake in advertising dollars.
Sullivan, as all of you well know, was the last real journalist standing on the hunt for the truth about Trig's birth.
Joe once told me that he had been hesitant about even approaching that subject, since he knew it would open the book to ridicule, but that he had been very impressed with the reporting by Andrew and myself, and came to realize that he could not write a book about Palin without addressing it.
He would never openly admit that he knew that she lied about the circumstances of the birth, but in conversations and e-mails it was pretty clear that he did not buy her story one little bit.
Sullivan also shared this e-mail that McGinniss sent him:
My shrink asked me this afternoon if I thought my book was a factor in Palin’s decision not to run. I said, “It might have been. It certainly didn’t tip her toward running. She may well have seen what one lone reporter turned up in four months and realized what teams from MSM outlets might learn in twelve, as they would have done over the next year, if she’d run.”
She said, “In that case, the people of the United States will be eternally in your debt.”
In that I am in total agreement.
Thank you Joe we owe you so very much.
P.S. For those who want to go on a trip down memory lane, here is a reminder of the e-mail exchange between Joe and I that the Right Wing tried to use to sabotage sales of "The Rogue."
Gryphen thank you for the personal memories you share about joe. I was one who followed and commented frequently on his blog and appreciated his honesty and integrity and the way he tried to maintain patience with fools that he had to suffer. I was among other things called a sycophant by others at his blog for standing up for joe against the many who were constantly berating him.
ReplyDeleteI also received the most obnoxious and snarky replies for shannyn Moore when I commented on her self serving and wallowing in self pity post about losing joe as a friend because she CHOSE to end their friendship. This was ver the whole je ruffle about his book being released when mudflats book was being released etc etc. when attempting to point out that she hadn't lost a friend but instead had severed ties to a man she pursued for her broadcast was not exactly sympathy inducing she replied with saying I was being paid to post my comments.
Her die hard supporters basically ran me off the site and my final words were that they really were no different than skank's cult followers.
Point of my rambling on is that joe was a stand up guy and I for one appreciate both your and Andrews words about him-so again, thank you:) he helped expose her for what she is and took a LOT of heat for doing so!!
Thank you for posting this, 4:47 PM. In the lower 48 and I remember this vividly. I also posted there often and he was always so kind. So many bloggers went bonzai over who was going to receive top billing for exposing her. Many I don't follow anymore.
DeleteRIP, Joe. You did more than your part, and Gryph? I am so very sorry about the loss of your friend.
Correcting myself-the flap was over Jeanne Devon and ken Morris accusing joe of leaking their book so there wouldn't be competition when his book was released. Shannyn -in her self made pity party accused joe of being less than honest with her about his book and using her.
DeleteMy point now and then is this-joe was a seasoned writer with a huge following and had garnered awards and acclaim for his work. With no disrespect to Jeanne or ken Morris-their book would not have been any competition for joe. The whole time myself and several other regulars on this blog tried to explain that accusing joe of leaking their book was ridiculous and there were others with lots more to gain who probably was behind it. That whole saga of shannyn and her "poor me-I trusted him" and Jeanne and ken accusing joe of sabotaging them smacked so much of skank world it was beyond ridiculous!!!
Anyway-just wanted to clarify what I said and to also apologize for the auto corrects which make some of my words look like gibberish:(
Carry on joe wherever you are and best wishes to your wife, your family and dogs....
I'm sorry to say it, but Shannyn Moore really dropped the ball on the Palins, and she isn't the only one (obviously not Gryphen). I guess they wanted to go mainstream. But then an outsider picked it up and got more coverage than any of them.
DeleteI'm not sure I completely understand why Joe pulled his punches on Babygate, but I figured I should trust his decades of experience doing investigative journalism.
5:50 PM here. Thanks, 6:03 PM and that's why I threw 'em to the curb and stayed here. It was easy to see what was going on. For land's sake, all three books including Dunn) told the same story, just in different ways.
DeleteMr. McGinniss moving in next door was pure genius on his part. I remember him posting a pic on his blog, "here I am on the deck minding my own business," while they were building that stupid fence, accusing him of peering in Piper's window to ogle her, when all he was going to see according to them was $arah out mowing the lawn with Trig strapped to her back. Comic GOLD.
That' when I knew.....batshit CRAZY. Look what's happened since Palin-wise. I stand by my opinion.
6:35 good for you!! And you are so correct!!! All the books were trying to tell the same story! My final straw with the lot was at shannyn moore's blog. Frankly if I call someone a friend and we hav a falling out I don't make it public so everyone can jump on the attack-that is not friendship. The fact that she had-note gryphen is still here but where's shannyn-the fact that she used a publuc platform to air her grievances smacked too much like sp-crying victim to her followers.
DeleteI am happy to hear from someone else who used to spend time at "joe's place" and who saw the rest of them for what they are-whining opportunists.
Do you remember when joe blogged about the storm that hit them back east and his dog was gone and how concerned he was? Now I just think of his dog wondering where joe is.....:(
Been there last year. Dogs are incredibly resilient. Glad you saw things as I did. RIP, Joe. Good man.
DeleteAnon @ 6:35 P.M. - Mr. McGinniss' book will stand the test of time longer than fuckin' toad's buddy-built fence! R.I.P. Mr. McGinniss, and thank you for exposing $arah, the compulsive liar and fraud!
Delete6:15 you hit the nail right on the head-they wanted to go mainstream. Shannyn refused to talk about sp yet that is exactly how she became known-by being a guest at msnbc and talking about skank. It appears that her "friendship" with joe was another opportunity in her mind to get on a national stage via radio or talk show.
DeleteThe point is they "befriended" joe under false pretenses and especially high profile peeps have a low threshold when it comes to trust due to all the sycophants!!!
Let me just say if I were in joe's shoes and had wined and dined with "friends" multiple times and talked about my book and what I was working on and writing and when I expected to be finished, etc. and then found out the very people I was speaking with in confidence was doing exactly the same thing without divulging that info I would have also been disgusted.
As stated before-if in fact Jeanne had signed a confidentiality clause and shannyn had been sworn to secrecy by Jeanne then they had NO business pursuing a friendship with joe.
The fact that they took no responsibility for their part in this nor acknowledged how the situation appeared in joe's eyes speaks volumes about their character.
And for what it's worth-shannyn shut me down on her pity post and Jeanne wouldn't post comments about trig yet joe let every single comment through on his blog including the blistering condemnations. He wasn't afraid of the critics-the same cannot be said of the other two.
I got the impression that in dissing we "Trig Truthers", Shannyn Moore was trying to protect her "brand" and Alaskan-public-persona as a legitimate radio/TV personality capable of critical in-depth radio interviews.
DeleteWell, she's done that. Her national exposure now is limited to rare invites to comment on Sarah Palin, or Sean Parnell's reversal on the natural gas pipeline AGIA Palin promoted, and an occasional re-blog on HuffPo or the Mudflats. Otherwise, she's faded back into the Alaska progressive talk radio/TV background.
And I imagine progressive radio/TV is marginalized up in Alaska every bit as it has been where I live, in the Pacific Northwest (both Seattle and Portland did away with the broadcast I used to listen to).
I am sorry to hear of his passing. I loved his book...but does anyone remember what he did to AKM?
ReplyDeleteYes,she acted like a whiny bitch that didn't get top billing.
Delete6:20
Deleteand because of that i abandoned her site and haven't returned since
For what it's worth...
DeleteWhile I never really knew any "insider" stuff about the back story on the little tempest between Shannon & Joe (other than what was reported and discussed on all the blogs), my takeaway was that Shannon's little drama was to save face in front of her closer friend, Jeanne D. It's my opinion that Shannon was a bit naive about how things work with a professional writer doing research for a book.
But whatever. Joe was a great writer whom I followed from my early years reading about horseracing and other "outdoorsy" sports topics in Sports Illustrated in the late 60s and 70s. I was reading hand-me-down issues a week behind until I pestered my friend's dad to the point that he told my Dad that he knew of the *perfect* birthday gift---- a sub to SI for my 9th birthday in 1970, the beginning of my lifetime love of reading. RIP, JOE.
He did nothing to her at all. He wrote and published a book and had a publisher for any book he wanted to write.
DeleteAKM, for some reason, all of a sudden didn't want the fake pregnancy mentioned. My guess is she got a "postage" payment.
I met Joe and dined with him several times as he was researching "Going to Extremes." I found it extremely hard to read, especially one village encounter. It could have been me. RIP, Joe.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear of his death. I was impressed with Joe, not only was he a best selling author, but he dared to find out the truth of Sarah and he did not disappoint. I can understand his reluctance to pursue the faked pregnancy but he did touch upon it. He was someone who looked for the truth and wasn't intimidated by the Wasilla Mafia.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad to see someone so clever and vital pass so young. Loved his books. His legacy will live on.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked and saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I did not remember that he was fighting cancer; but I do recall now him mentioning it on his blog. He has left us too soon; I'm sure he had much more to add to add to literature and the world. Namaste.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently re-reading his book "The Rogue". In the middle of the book when he's discussing security for that rental house and blog and e-mail threats directed at him and his family by Palinistas, he mentions getting up in the middle of the night to pee.
DeleteThat's sometimes a side effect of prostate problems, failure to empty the bladder at bedtime. I wonder if he ever had routine PSAs or followed up on that night urgency problem? Being diagnosed with "inoperable prostate cancer" is usually an indication the answer would be "no", because it's one of the slowest-growing cancers.
Good of you to post this.
ReplyDeleteI remember commenting on McGinniss's blog, pestering him to come off the fence, as he put it, re the Trig Hoax. It seemed clear from the blog and from his book, that he was certain Palin hoaxed us. Then why didn't he say so, why didn't he come down from sitting on the fence? He said it was because all the rest of his book would not be taken seriously if he brought up this subject.
I wish he had left behind another document in which he tells us more. Perhaps he did.
Exactly, he would have been treated like the Obama bithers: nut job! He was doing honest investigative journalism, which is almost unheard of these days, had integrity, and stood by his work.
DeleteThe thing about Joe's writing was he was the last of the true "gumshoe" type reporters. Early in his career, he wrote articles for the Philadelphia Inquirer on various subjects, but you could always count on him. My father clipped and saved them all, unfortunately they're brittle and unreadable now, but when I was ten, we sat and read each day's post with relish, usually sparking a discussion.
ReplyDeleteJoe adopted Alaska as his own, You could feel it in the conde nast publications. I'm big on true crime, and no one wrote it like Joe.
Growing up, our neighbors were close friends with Joe and reading this post reminded me so much of the things they said about him. Especially that he could make friends with just about anyone.
I was upset with the media's treatment of Joe when he wrote "The Rogue", the man deserved much better, but he kept going like only Joe can.
Again, Rest In Peace, Joe. My condolences to Nancy and his extended family. And my condolences to you as well, Gryphen. You were a true friend, unlike some other bloggers who will remain nameless. I have everything he wrote that's available and will relish reading them all again. To find comfort and give thanks.
You can't libel a dead person. I don't know if a posthumous publication can libel.
ReplyDeleteHe also didn't go any further than he did with the Trig story because the publisher's lawyers needed ironclad proof. He did the best he could, and writing that only a sociopath could have done such a thing was his way of affirming his belief that the whole Trig story was a gigantic hoax.
What am I bet that Sarah Palin will not be able to help herself: that she'll have to comment on his death, to get in one last swift and nasty kick.
What I read in earlier comments here about Shannyn Moore and Jeanne Devon: i always wondered why neither of them participated in exposing the Palin Hoax. I always assumed that both were well connected in the community and would have known the truth. At first, their reticence made me wonder if perhaps I was wrong: that Palin had birthed Trig.
ReplyDeleteBut as the details piled up, including photo proof of a too-flat-profile Palin just 5 weeks and 3 weeks before the supposed delivery, I knew the hoax was real.
I still don't understand why these two well-placed and influential women did not speak up. They thus enabled the hoax by doing nothing.
It would have tanked her gift shop sales.
DeleteWhy Gryph is trolled so hard when he gets too close to the truth. He knows a lot, his only to divulge, an expert player, and BOY do they come out.
DeleteGryph OWNS the Palins and they know it.
The moment that Sarah was nominated I read Mudflats to learn about her. Jeanne did not allow comments about any of the Palin kids, especially Trig. If those four letters showed up in a comment, the comment automatically went into moderation and stayed suspended there.
DeleteMy guess is they were paid not to write about it. Yes I said it, I think both were on Sarah's "postage list.
DeleteI feel sad for Joe's passing, but also that he went to his reward without knowing if his work would ever expose the truth. But there is a God, IMO, and the Palins can't deceive or lie to Him.
ReplyDeleteI would not want to be in Sarah Palin's shoes. What did she gain for all the lies, in this life? Is she happy? Doubtful. When all is said and done, she won't be able to drag that big bank account with her when it's her time. Her story is very much like Jacob Marley and Ebenezer Scrooge.
@anon 8:40 PM
Delete"When all is said and done, she won't be able to drag that big bank account with her when it's her time."
Oh, really! All she needs is a coffin with "big" pockets. That will do it!
So sorry to hear of his passing. I was hoping his next challenge would be to again do what the "Disneyfied" press failed to:
ReplyDelete...an expose on the amazing entrance into politics by ex pizza man Herman Cain. Rachel Maddow tried to clue us all in to how the entire event was "performance art."
I'd have loved to hear the real backstory on all that, as Joe would be able to tell it.
devon and moore both "acted" like a friend to joe and let him talk about his book and publication plans, etc. while never divulging the fact that jeanne was working on a book about palin. moore was "sworn to secrecy" so she claims.
ReplyDeleteso, they accuse joe of betraying them ONLY to excuse themselves for their own betrayal. if they couldn't tell him about jeanne's book then neither of them should have compromised the situation by pursuing a friendship with him.
btw gryphen-why did you send jeanne the email you received from joe with the excerpts from her book? and why did you admit it was from joe when she called you? and if this isn't true, why have you allowed this to stay out there without a rebuttal? why was your allegiance to jeanne more than joe if he was your good friend? just asking-not accusin. this info is out there for anyone to read and i always wondered about it and why you got involved like that?
Okay well I am quite uninterested in dredging up these ugly things from the past. After all the man just passed away.
DeleteHowever I will say this.
The night I received the manuscript in the e-mail I did not know that anybody else had also received it.
I wrote back to Joe and said that he had made a mistake and that I hoped I was the only one he had sent it to, because it would go no further than me.
He replied that the manuscript had arrived at his literary agent's office, without the usual legal language attached that prevented the agent from disseminating it. It was a rookie mistake, and there were others who I believe also took advantage of that.
I called Jeanne that night to let her know that it had been released to at least one person. I do not think I told her who had sent it to me that night. And I did not send her the e-mail.
The next day I learned that it had been sent to numerous media outlets and that they had identified Joe as the source.
There were lot's of egos involved in that fracas and almost everybody felt betrayed by somebody.
I was determined to stay neutral and that ended up costing me a number of friendships.
As I have said Joe was a complicated man, and he did indeed feel betrayed by friends with whom he shared sensitive information and who did not let him know that they were working together on a book of their own.
However on the flip side there were good friends of mine who suffered because of his feelings of betrayal and how he responded to them.
Thank you for addressing this gryphen!!! I understand there were lots of peeps involved all with their own agendas and some were your friends. In an email of joe's he stated the fact that he felt betrayed and hurt and that the secrecy between shannyn and Jeanne about the book while encouraging him to be open about his book didn't smell right. He tried to explain that another book on the same subject could cause competition if released at the same time. He also said that after reading the manuscript he felt his book release would not be harmed at all by their book. He explained there was no decent explanation for their behavior because he knew jeff Dunn was writing a book about skank too and both men were fine with that.
DeleteBeing lied to even if by omission especially in a situation such as this is never good. Joe didn't lie. Others did.
Jeanne et al claimed the excerpt leaks caused them to loose any interest publishers would have but publishers release bits of books all the time to generate interest.
Jeanne's agent released the manuscript-it was her fault it got out there-and I only want this brought out because he did pass away and many people thought badly of joe over this whole situation and I want his name cleared.
Thank you again for replying-much appreciated.
In reiterating and clarifying this story here on IM, I wonder if the above explanation elicits some kind of pushback...elsewhere... ;-D
DeleteWhen Joe commented that he was friends with Roger Ailes, I expressed my disappointment here on IM. I was taken to task by an anonymous commenter so posted an explanation of why I was disappointed. It was after Joe had appeared on someone's show and said that he had had upwards of 5,000 nasty emails, some of which were death threats to both him and his family. I was very concerned about Joe and his family's safety that summer next door to the Palins. My reasoning was had I been in Joe's shoes and was a friend with Ailes, I would call my friend Ailes and ask him to call off his dogs. My disappointment was because I was anxiously awaiting the release of Joe's book on Palin and was afraid the book would skim over what Palin's past simply because Joe was friends with Ailes. After reading the original comment from the anonymous commenter, I did rethink my attitude, decided I was wrong, immediately pre-ordered Joe's book on my Kindle, read it the day I got it, then posted on IM that it was great! As I read the book, I never once questioned that Joe was withholding anything - friendship or no friendship with Ailes.
ReplyDeleteHad Joe McGinniss flatly stated that Trig's birth was a hoax, the book would have been dismissed. If I remember correctly , what he did do was he didn't state that the birth story wasn't a hoax.
The thing is, people can view the photos of Palin a few weeks before Trig's supposed birth and those photos alone are proof that she wasn't pregnant. Those same people can listen to Sarah's and Todd's interview about the Wild Ride and that too is proof that she either wasn't the birth mother or that she was cold and calculating and didn't care a bit about the safety of the baby. Either case told me what I needed to know about Sarah Palin. My point is that even if Joe had flatly stated that the Trig story was a hoax, many, many people wouldn't believe it just as they don't believe the photos of her immediately before Trig's supposed birth, they chose to believe Sarah's story. Same thinking as with the Wild Ride story - logic and reason says it's not true or that she's a cold-hearted, sorry excuse for a mother. People choose to not believe facts even when they're looking straight at them. IMO, Joe McGinniss did the right thing by not dooming the book to the classification of another "Obama was born in Kenya" book.
I regret that I even questioned Joe McGinniss for a few hours about his friendship with Roger Ailes. I wasn't looking at it realistically. RIP, Joe McGinniss.
The Palinistas and general clueless public who still believe Sarah Palin actually gave birth to Trig are the same kind of people as that woman Julie Boonstra, the right wing leukemia patient who still refuses to believe her new ACA health insurance is saving her money over the old health insurance policy that was cancelled by her insurer.
DeleteThe evidence is right there in black and white -- or color, in case of Palin photos in February/March 2008 -- and they STILL don't believe.
But their belief in God and the Bible is never questioned. Bizarre.
I said "My reasoning was had I been in Joe's shoes and was a friend with Ailes, I would call my friend Ailes and ask him to call off his dogs."
ReplyDeleteI should have said "...I would call my friend Ailes and him - as Sarah Palin's employer, to tell Sarah to call off her dogs".
Everyone one of us has something to be ashamed of, and Joe's release of that book that wasn't his, with the lame excuse that there had been nothing attached to the file which prohibited the release, was weak and stupid and out of character for him. But I liked every one of his books, especially Going to Extremes and Ms Palin's revelations. Another journalist of the old school that will be sorely missed.
ReplyDelete8:27 and there is some push back kajo! Nice try but facts are facts. Those two women acted with great subterfuge and whatever excuse they throw out there they made their own beds and they can lie in them.
ReplyDeleteJoe sent the manuscript to a few people in Alaska including gryphen-not to nbc, msnbc, the times, USA today or any other major outlet. He is the only one who knows the motivation but since he sent it to gryphen I would speculate he was either trying to let others know what was going on so they could protect their interests too or to just get things out in the open ahead of both books being published. Obviously joe was not the only one giving Jeanne and shannyn information -joe just made sure everyone was aware of the truth. He did not keep it a secret about what he was writing so wasn't playing anyone to get information.
The naysayers bring up the Jeffrey McDonald book as an attack upon joe however, my personal feeling is that he was dealing with a psychopath and wanted to tell the story. That situation in no way compares to this one.
That was a journalist writing a book about a criminal in prison-this is the story of him writing a book and wrongly trustin pg some of the people he met along the way.
Why can't everyone just keep it simple-he trusted them and they lied to him.
They threw the mold away when they made Joe McGinniss. He stayed true to himself for his entire life. He never once sold out and I would be very surprised if he ever told a lie.
ReplyDeleteOf course, I did not know Joe personally, but his writing was such that you always felt like you knew him.
