Interesting New Rule from Bill Maher on Friday night's Real Time concerning the militarization of police.

Courtesy of Mediaite:

Maher ran through the gamut of American small towns (e.g. — Doraville, Ga., Nixon, Mo., Justice, Ill.) that somehow employ military-style tanks in their police departments. These tanks, often gifted by the Pentagon to police departments, come “fresh from our glorious victories in Iraq and Afghanistan,” and are used for unnecessarily over-militarized police exercises.

“Cops all know what it’s like when you get a new toy, you want to use it.” he continued. “I bought a glue gun once, and by the end of the weekend my dog’s face was stuck to the toilet rim. But in West Springfield, Mass., the police department’s new toy is two grenade launchers. Why? In case Boko Haram takes Connecticut?” he joked.

Other interesting moments:

“Once you start dressing and equipping people like an occupying army, they start acting like one.”

“We used to send SWAT teams only for hostage or active shooter scenarios. It happened a few thousand times a year. Now it happens a thousand times a week — forced, no-knock entries into private homes. And now for almost any reason at all like serving warrants, breaking up poker games, arresting low-level pot dealers. Come on. It’s a guy who sells weed, you don’t need to shoot his dog and crash through his window.”

“In the ’90s, conservatives used to warn about jack-booted government thugs coming to take away our freedoms. But where are those conservatives today when we need them? This is the massive expansion of government power that you numbskulls in the tea party should be freaking out about. You’re always screaming about the loss of liberty, and how tyranny is coming. Yeah, it’s coming right through the door with a battering ram, no warrant, and a stun grenade.”

I have always been a supporter of law enforcement, which is always made easier when you are a middle class white male living in a predominantly Caucasian community.

However the mindset that I see taking over the police force is numerous places throughout the country makes me want to avoid those places like the plague.

Take a look at that picture and tell me if the first thing that popped into your mind wasn't "Must be soldiers stationed over seas." But it's not, it's law enforcement professional on American streets dealing with American law breakers.

So now go ahead and tell me that having loose gun restrictions in this country is not negatively affecting ever one of its citizens. Because I think we all that these men are not covered in Kevlar because they are afraid of somebody pulling a knife or a baseball on them.

Uh huh. Welcome to the world inspired by the Patriot Act and created by the Department of Homeland Security.

    Gee. Thanks Congress!

O/T, but it was 45 years ago right now that I was sitting in the Crowsnest at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage, enjoying the sun - and Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon! I believe that it was the first live television link in Alaska's history. Am I correct? It was a truly exciting moment and one that was fully embraced by all those in the Crowsnest while downing champagne provided by the "oldest madam" in Anchorage if I remember correctly :) Fun was had by all. If my memory is faulty, it could be directly related to other occasions in same location those many years ago.

It's very scary. I served in the military (in the olden days) and I don't like what I see. I live in NH. We have multiple tanks in our miniscule towns. WHY? The official reason given on the purchase order: Too many Liberals

I had to drive through Boston on the Friday after the marathon bombings. I was thoroughly disgusted by what I saw. Tanks on the ground in the city.... Parades of state police on I-84 in CT heading to the MA toll booths. Soldiers in full military gear including machine guns were at the toll booths and searching cars. Snipers were stationed in cell phone towers.

Never in my life had I ever witnessed such a display of illegal martial law.

And the sheeple think it's just fine. They wear idiotic bracelets claiming "Boston Strong". The truth is they were Boston Chickens. Just plain putrid.

He's right, especially the part about wearing a uniform. When I see tanks, I think of Tienamen (sp?) Square, Afghanistan, and war zones. The streets in some of our cities come pretty close to war zones, but I see no need for this level of escalation.
More guns in the street aren't the answer, neither are more tanks, ospreys, missile launchers, grenades, etc.
All I want it my country back, where it's safe to get your mail, see a movie, shop, do some banking, etc... is that too much to ask?

This, coming from a woman who sent a bizarre pregnancy email to friends and family as "Trig's Creator,"

"We're not going to dethrone God and substitute him with someone who wants to play God," she also said.

Whats with the masks that hide their faces. On a side note, it's been happening for a while that municipalities have been arming themselves like this, mostly because no one has been paying attention. Sheriff joe in Az, the ASPC in Warren County NJ. Those who have infiltrated our local governments, the vigilantes dressed as representatives of law enforcement are doing this.

Ps Gryphen, the commenting box sucks using an ipad, it freezes and becomes unresponsive.

And you know where our police force got this militarized force idea? Israel.

And it started a fuck of a lot longer ago than 9/11:

The motto is no longer 'protect and serve' if it ever was.

It's suspect and harass now. All citizens are perceived as dangerous terrorists. Just a couple days ago, a man was murdered by police in NYC for selling loose cigarettes.

The cops have no problem killing anyone. Kill, kill, kill.

It's so exciting to use the new toys given to them from Army surplus. Who wouldn't want a grenade launcher? Get those college kids! How dare they drink in public!!

To be fair, I see much of the same concern posted on Conservative/Libertarian sites and FB. This may be the ONE common ground they have with Liberals. MicMac

The United States of America is nothing like it use to be! Frightening to say the least! Call a cop for help? Forget it!
