John Oliver talks about prison in America.

This should shock and disgust all Americans.

Another excellent job by John Oliver and HBO.

Shocking Study: Over HALF of Prisoners Executed in the U.S are Severely Mentally Ill

A new study of 100 of the most recent US executions has found some disturbing facts. Out of those 100 cases examined by three legal researchers, a majority of those executed had “a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia, post-traumatic stress disorder or psychosis.”

In other words, the US is executing a massive amount of inmates who have severe mental illnesses. Yet thanks to two odd Supreme Court rulings, these executions are constitutional.

Conclusion: Our prisons ARE a little bit racist, no, our judicial system IS racist. Have you seen the video of three cops beating up a black guy in Staten Island. He died from an illegal choke hold (the guy, not the cops).

Yes I saw it and was disgusted. There were five cops. The five perps are on desk duty "Until further notice and investigation"

No one tried CPR, no one called an ambulance to get him stabilized, the guy's heart went arrhythmic while no one did a thing to help. What was his crime? Too much melanin? He didn't look violent, nor resistant at all.

It was alleged he was selling a cigarette? We've come to this?

You must be a multi-millionaire and the other favorable traits and skin, then you would not even get a citation.

Take Oliver's segment and add 2 other stories in the news today and all Americans should be shocked, disgusted and also SCARED enough to devote more time to our democratic process:

    1. "Eldeerly Vet Arrested After Asking Asking Politician to Speak Louder in Town Meeting"

Two different videos show the guy handcuffed and calmly allowing cops to escort him from the room yet he's been charged with resisting arrest with a $2000 bail.

    2. "Military Device Used on Detroit Water Shutoff Protesters"

Police used military-developed technology -- an LRAD, or Long Range Acoustic Device -- to disperse a peaceful protest rally against the water shut-offs at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit on Friday, July 18.

"Those who were on the platform to speak felt vibration throughout their body and some clutched at their chest during the deployment which last (sic) about 2 minutes."

To hear what that LRAD sounded like, click the second link below.

IMHO this represents an UNACCEPTABLE trend and it must be stopped -- but with VOTES, NOT VIOLENCE.

My husband is a criminal defense atty. He said he had never seen a clearer explanation of what is going on.

This is chilling to watch. The privatization of our prison system and the judicial cell filling machine for relatively minor offenses has to stop.

That was SO hard to watch...I kept wanting to change the channel, as I was getting madder and madder, and then, of course FRUSTRATED.

If only there was some way to force the people who could make changes, watch this over and over.

  10. The doctors and nurses in the AK prison system also do crazy things. They gave me a wool blanket that did not look like wool. I itched so bad I scratched until I bled. They knew the blanket was wool, so why not ask me if I was allergic. Seems simple and obvious, but not for them. Instead a nurse gave me lard to rub on my body. Finally another inmate told me the blanket was wool by asking the nurse for a different one because she too was allergic. Lard is actually good for skin, but I doubt it was organic so I was exposed to antibiotics and toxins. Yes it did smell horrible.

There is a person who legitimately BELONGS in prison, instead he has $80 MILLION invested in private prisons - Dickless Cheney. Most prisoners are not nearly as evil and law breaking as this person, he is VILE.

  12. Your post proves John Olivers's point, sadly.

Sarah Palin gossip post (she has no power and is now inconsequential in this country): hundreds of comments.

Post about prisons (one of the great crises this country faces) = less than 15 comments

People indeed do not care. John was right.
