It usually takes me some time to transcribe even a short video of hers as I have to keep stopping and asking myself if I actually heard what I thought I just heard, and then of course every paragraph or so I have to stop and bang my head on the desk.
So here is the transcript courtesy of a brave, and possibly suicidal, IM visitor:
"You know, I come from a family full of teachers so I have a great appreciation for uh that vocation. But, especially since Trig came into our lives, I have an even greater appreciation, especially for those teachers who have the heart for the special needs kids. Uh, Trig, for instance, today, we took him to a speech therapist because he’s headin’ into [begin sing-song voice] real kindergarten in the fall and uh, you know, of course, he needs to be a little bit more ready than he is now. Doesn’t quite talk. Still does his sign language. Puts two words together, though, which is awesome and, you know, at six years old there-there’s expectations whether [mumble] you know, whatever degree of-a…of-a special needs the kids have. There’s expectations, of course, that-that the families will do all that they can uhm before kinda handin’ em over in a sense for at least a few hours every day in the school system. So…great appreciation for the teachers who have the patience and the uh therapists who does-they do miraculous work with these kids. Today. Trig. At speech therapy, he…uhm…he-he did what the therapist needed him to do and they’re-the therapists are so observant, of course, they catch things that we miss all the time. They know how to help the kids, even better in some areas, than we know how to…help..Trig. He also attended uhm eating therapy because uh still doesn’t eat a lot of solid food. In fact, I think he’s th-the only kid in the world who hasn’t had a Cheerio yet. So, he-he’s still working on uhm food sensory things, the mouth, and he’ll be eating solid foods I’m sure uh at some point here, in the near future. So, great appreciation for those who have the heart to help the kids with special needs because they’re so full of potential and purpose and they’re-they’re God’s GIFT to-to this world, we know, personally, to our family, the gift Trig is kinda makes us keep everything in perspective and we can understand what true innocent joy is by being around Trig because he-he’s joyful and-uh so he, you know, kinda spreads to the rest of us, makes up [sic] happy. So, just wanta [begin exaggerated baby talk] thank all those folks out there, whether they’re professional therapists or teachers or just uh good yaa [audible sigh] good mom and pops who want to reach out and help these groups that help kids with special needs, and adults with special needs, and they support ‘em financially, they support ‘em uhm with their time, volunteering to uh to help these good, good people who are here for a good reason. I-I thank you for havin’ that heart for these kids."
As I have mentioned before I work with this population of children, and I can tell you for an absolute certainty that if what Palin is reporting above is accurate, then she should NEVER have been allowed to take Trig into her home.
Children with Downs Syndrome require a great deal of early therapeutic intervention in order to help them make progress, and if that intervention is not available they fall so far behind that they may never achieve the milestones that are well within their reach with the proper support.
Trig was a prop, and it is clear that once he was no longer of any use he was tossed aside and neglected until Palin could find a use for him once again.
Fortunately for him it looks like she has, sadly it may be too late to allow him to reach his full potential.
He's SIX and she's just discovered special needs therapists?? Poor kid, unbelievable. Palin could use a speech therapist, also too. Ugh.

DeleteOk, I'm as appalled as the rest of you, but the sad reality is, child protective services are focused, and sometimes not well enough,or with nearly enough resources, on protecting kids who are in physical danger from physical abuse and/or gross neglect A kid who is fed and clothed and sheltered and not beaten, but not getting support services appropriate for their disability, is just not a kid who child protective services is going to worry about, or spring into action to protect.

I don't know how it works but children who are dressed and fed but missing a critical component to life and childhood can be helped. The courts do recognize various abuse, neglect and crime. It must come to their attention.

If the parents are powerful and well connected the are pretty much ignored by CPS. If the parents closely control who has access to the family and have legal representation, then no one will report anything actionable.

My 46 year old brother in law is downs and he has been in therapy since birth. My mother in law treated him like she treated her other children. He was potty trained by the age of 4 and certainly eating solids well before. Sarah Palin you are an abusive parent. You disgust me more than words.

DeleteI've also worked with this population, and Trig should have been "in school" from his first weeks of life. Virginia has specialized programs for Down Syndrome kids beginning in early infancy all the way through preschool. Not only do the therapists work with the children, but they teach the parents how to continue the activities at home. It really is a 24/7 approach to maximizing the child's potential.
ReplyDeleteUnless he's profoundly disabled--and considering the photographic evidence of him playing with Tripp and other activities--he should have been eating solid foods long, long ago. Eating is also connected to his speech development as is being able to hear properly. Never see the glasses, and never see the hearing aids.

In my midwestern state, we have occupational therapists who vist the home (don't let the term "occupational" fool you) they start at age 0-3. means no kid, regardless of parental ability to transport gets needed services. Don't Alaskans care about their most vulnerable populations?

"...Trig came into our lives..." means that she did not give birth to him. SP has such odd ways of speaking, but there is no doubt that when she talks about Trig, she carefully chooses how to mention his 'arrival". The snippet of Trig's life presented in this most recent video sure provides a picture of what we all knew to be true - SP is a horrible mother who only used Trig for sympathy and political gain. She didn't "blink" when asked to be McCain's running mate, even though she was supposedly the mother of a Down Syndrome infant - most likely the mother of a post-partum teenager - and she's continuing to use family members to line her pockets. Shameful.

ReplyDeleteOn one of Sarah Palin's Amazing America shows, she showed Todd and Track "wrenching" some snow machines. I bet that Todd takes very good care of his snow machines, cars, trucks, air planes and boats. Engines have to be oiled. If you drive a car and that light keeps flashing "change oil," you don't do the car any favors to keep driving it without service.
ReplyDeleteIt's the same with kids. They don't raise themselves. As babies, they need to be fed, kept clean, put on a regular schedule for eating and sleeping, more keeping them clean and cleaning their clothes, and most important part of all, holding, loving, cooing, talking and interacting with the baby.
One day, the baby smiles or laughs and gets a great response, so he learns to do it again. He says a word and he gets more positive response. This is the way that people have raised their children throughout history.
For Sarah and Todd Palin to take on the parenting duties of raising Trig, they should have provided the very minimum care for him. We saw the photos of Trig being held aloft to cheering crowds, bright lights, late hours during the 2008 campaign and the bus tour to sell Sarah's first book. There is a photo of Trig throwing his head back and screaming, refusing the food being offered by Sally and another woman. That's not how to raise a child, and that's not the way to raise a child with special needs.
We rarely saw Trig wear his glasses in those photo op's. If he can't see the world, he can't interact with it. We have never seen any evidence of hearing aids. That might have helped with learning how to understand sounds and what people were saying. No wonder he can barely put two words together, Go Daddy. Kids grow up hearing sounds and if Trig was deprived of that sensory information, it would be the same thing as driving a car and never getting the oil changed or getting a tune up. He was not properly cared for.
The video that Sarah should have produced 6 years ago should have been showing her cuddling Trig and teaching him to say something. Six years later, it is going to be a much bigger job for the therapist. This looks like this is the first time that there has been a therapist in Trig's life. And, she only seems to have appeared because they want to put Trig in a regular kindergarten. He has to be able to hear the teacher's directions. He has to be able to tell people if something hurts. Most schools insist that the child is toilet trained.He needs to be able to say that he needs to go to the toilet, that he is wet, or cold or something else. Trig cannot even feed himself. Those muscles around his jaw and mouth would have had more exercise and development if he had begun therapy when he was months old, not years old.
I don't think that I could say this any louder. SARAH PALIN IS A TERRIBLE PARENT. AND SO IS TODD. She has been more involved in promoting herself than caring for her most precious gift form God. And it explains why she hasn't done a very good job of molding Track, Bristol and Willow into mature, contributing adults. That transcript is such a sad example of parental neglect. Most precious gifts from God deserve far better treatment than that.
Can't talk. Can't eat solid foods at six? I bet he's still in diapers as well. Those therapists must have been appalled at the total lack of parenting for this poor child. With her money , he should have had specialists from day one. Oh, but he was too busy being dragged around on his diaper at night, being dragged to speeches. I feel so badly for him. And to think she proclaimed that she would be an advocate for special needs kids and their families.

DeleteSomebody has to say it, so I'll say it. No mother would treat a child like that. Sarah describes Trig as "coming into their lives" and that he was a "precious gift from God." I would hope the the birth mother would feel a pang of guilt after reading Sarah's comments or seeing her video. My guess is that the birth mother is no better equipped to provide the proper care for a child with special needs. What did Sarah say? We can take better care of him that you kids? No she can't and she didn't. Sarah is nothing more than a spoiled child herself, needing the spotlight, unable to care for a child who really does need constant care, attention and therapy. It's six years too late.

ReplyDeleteI read through this Developmental Scale for Children with Down Syndrome. Even allowing for individual differences, Trig's situation is shocking.
By the age of 5 - "Many will have some of the basic concepts and knowledge for learning number, maths and reading. These achievements are possible, provided that parents have high expectations for social development and good behaviour from the first year of life, and that services offer targeted support for motor development and speech and language development. Like all children, progress for children with Down syndrome is influenced by family life and parents' child rearing skills....."
If most mainstream news stories are written to an eighth grade reading level and comprehension, what is Palin's channel... fourth or fifth grade?

ReplyDeleteThe people commenting here wrote over and over, "Where are Trig's glasses?" If he couldn't see, he was already at a disadvantage. Without therapy and a consistent schedule, they only handicapped the boy further. Gryphen described seeing Trig at a basketball game. When the team scored, a loud buzzer sounded and the crowd went wild. The place was also brightly lit. Trig slept through all of it. He did not flinch at the loud noises that would have awakened just about anyone else. We never saw Trig wearing a hearing aid. That kind of therapy has to start very early, hearing sounds and learning how to make the mouth and those weak muscles repeat the sounds. It's not easy. It takes a lot of time, hard work and the attention of professionals. (I know a family with a deaf child and they are heavily into early education for the entire family to be able to communicate with each other). His weak facial muscles may also be the problem with eating solid food, but never had any therapy to develop them.

When first listening, my sympathy metre started going up, up, up for Sarah. At first it seemed she was being real about Trig's challenges, struggles and she was sharing that with her readers.

More likely, some of her readers, who are either families with DS children, or child therapists, have asked her personal questions about Trig's progress. They may have asked her about certain beneficial treatments and if she is using them?
She could have answered questions privately, or, if she's a fake, she would make a 6 minute video talking cutesy to ward off suspicion.
That lady working with Trig could very well be his nanny. Why doesn't she show video footage of the actual therapists in their own setting at a clinic or school???
She can afford the best, where are the food treatment centers in Alaska? She could give them a 'shout-out' like she does all of Todd's snowmachine vendor buddies. Why doesn't Sarah give a shout-out to the professionals near Wasilla?
All that sounds correct. Except one itsy bitsy thingy. Paranoia. Missy does not want prying eyes or anyone to have access to info of this care and child. Sary is so predictable. So silly. So botox shiny ..... a leech with lipstick.

OK, everyone has to remember when their kids (or grand kids) were little. How old were they when they could sit in the high chair and pick up cheerios, one at a time? Or those Gerber peas & carrots which came in already cooked bite sized pieces? The doctor was the one who suggested that I teach my kid how to hold zwieback, those rock hard twice backed cookies. She was teething, and chewing on that thing made her feel better, and she learned to feed herself. She was 6 months old, and after that, it was a big treat for her to pick up bite sized pieces of food, and yes, cheerios. Of course there was a mess on the floor. It comes with the territory, but that's how kids learn to feed themselves.
DeleteI nursed both of mine, and neither ewer had a bottle (or a pacifier.) Yes, by six months they were using sippy cups for water, and picking up any and everything. The fact that he can't pick up or chew even a Cheerio is very disturbing. Did no one in this brilliant, vibrant family notice that he was years behind? Good grief. He isn't the first child to be in the home. I guess we should rejoice that they allowed him to learn to walk.

DeleteMy DS girlfriend, who is just a few months older than Trig, is apparently leaps and bounds ahead of him developmentally. Her mother began her therapy before they ever left the hospital after she was born.
ReplyDeleteShe rides the big school bus, takes karate, participates in several local fundraising events every year, and is going to start a cooking class this fall. She and her mom have the sweetest habit of seeming like, no matter where they are, every moment they spend together is a special moment. They are a joy to be around.
ps, in Trig's defense, girlfriend is VERY picky about her food. She eats solid food, and has for a long time; but, if/when she finds something she really likes, you better stock up, cause she is likely to want to eat that every meal for the next six months.

I don't think that Sarah Palin has any idea how she looks to other people. It will always be Katie Couric's fault. Sarah thinks that she gave a good interview. She doesn't see how tacky she looks and sounds. She doesn't realize how dumb she sounds. She thinks that if she shows a video of her with Trig, we will gush. No, wasn't fooled by the Wild Ride Story and not fooled by this one one either. I don't think that Sarah realizes how bad that video makes her look. There is nothing like seeing the truth of what we have always suspected. Trig didn't get any therapy for the last six years.
DeleteJust from reading the transcript it sounded like someone had to hold a gun to her head to make her pretend to be invested in Trig's care. I swear that's the most in depth she has spoken about his development EVER. And it sounded like it was completely painful for her to do. I mean, all those words and not one of them bashing Obama or promoting herself. She had to give other people credit because she couldn't even think of one thing she had done to help this boy in his young life...not one thing. If she could you know she'd be crowing about it. That's why there are supposed to be cameras everywhere. Sarah also got the wake up call that Trig wasn't going to regular kindergarten unless he could feed himself and say more than a word or two.

DeleteI've only been a helper for some occupational therapy. The effort the parents put in and their eagerness to learn is so outstanding. They work to give their challenged kids every possible chance. And cheerfully rope in all and sundry to make sure the therapy routine never falters.
In this video Sarah Palin is describing therapies that Trigg should have had in the critical zero to 3 years. To make up for that loss is difficult if not impossible.
That no one intervened on Trigg's behalf sickens me.
I agree, but look at what his 'mother' has been doing for six years..flitting from plane to plane, TV studio to studio, state to state, and only paying attention to him when we bugged her about it here. Whoever was charged with his care while she was gone should be ashamed too. What were they doing day after day? We know he never had glasses that fit (were they are real as Sarah's?) He never wore hearing aids and obviously needs them, and he has not even had enough time spent with him so he can eat a Cheerio. And she posts this stuff? Sarah Palin, you are a disgusting human being, and a horrible mother who does not deserve to ever be around children.

During the entire six years Dr. Cathy never had any concern for Trig. Doesn't she claim that she delivered him at Mat-Su? This is shocking in many ways. Poor Trig. Not his grand parents, Heather, Molly, Chuck Jr, none of the other family and close friends. The older Palin children have no excuse either. No one at all did anything for Trig. This is most appalling! Yes, charge them with child abuse and neglect. It will be just as disgusting if the state or country doesn't do something for the best interest of Trig. And yes, Bristol is so much like her mother. Tripp's custody hearings should consider what is revealed about the family and Trig's neglect. Levi seems to feel he must go on with the big lie but the truth does matter to both Trig and Tripp. Just think if earlier on the truth had come out. Trig would have had a chance to develop sooner and have a happier functioning life. Now he will be behind and it will be more difficult to try and catch up. All those who keep the secrets are responsible for Trigs neglect. It is a worse crime if nothing is done for the child.

Could he not have seen a surgeon or throat specialist? We know some DS children do have problems with tongue protruding, and combinaiton of problems swallowing/breathing, but at this late stage in his life, treatments should have started a long time ago.

Sarah has always been very private, getting rid of the cook and the state troopers when she was governor. It was as if she was hiding some secrets, and a staff hanging around might have overheard something. But, Sarah could have brought Trig TO the therapist. Still, Palin keeps her circle very close, and a therapist might learn too much about them.

Sarah has to do all she can to perpetuate the myth she has woven about her life, her kids, her family life. And most of all her sicko father and his abuse.
Sarah has been keeping secrets from a very young age, probably 8 or 9, and she does all she can to control her outward persona. She is one sick, sick person, with deep scars of sexual abuse and incest, which is what drives much of her behavior today.
She is the farthest thing from 'private'. She parades her entire life in front of the world every chance she gets, but it's very calculated in it's presentation. She exposes only what she determines will feed the myth and the media plays right along.
It's only people like IMers and Gryphen, specifically, who can see right through the dance. That's why she freaks out when she's exposed for something that she hasn't carefully orchestrated HERSELF,
to be exposed. When she's about to be busted, she gets ahead of the announcement to spin it into the most 'friendly' angle she can.
Add to that the most extreme narcissism and a whole lot of personality disorders, rage, shame, fear of discovery, massive denial and the lies on top of lies she has told herself and has come to believe, and you've got a toxic soup of dysfunction and mental illness.
Sarah NEVER should have been a mother. Sarah NEVER should have brought any children into this world. She's deeply sick and abusive, because that is what she was taught.
She shouldn't get away with this, suddenly going all appreciative of the gifts from God (therapists). They weren't sent, Sarah, they had compassion in their hearts and wanted to find an occupation that helped others. They study hard and submit to rules and regulations and licensing boards and love their clients. They don't whine and trash the system and the government; they're too busy contributing to society.

"Came in to our lives" is a welcoming phrase from adoptive parents.

Somebody needs to be sure Levi has a copy of this and some of the comments, too.....not exactly the kind of people you want your kid around. She'd be in an orange suit around here, where child neglect and/or abuse is taken seriously. Where in the heck is the local child welfare unit? If they haven't been notified before, this ought to be enough to have them knocking on her door at 8AM tomorrow morning.

Payme channel, looks like there is some catching up to do regarding his care. That Sarah is commenting only NOW on the wonderfulness of (worthless union joinin' ) teachers and therapists tells us that she has only recently become aware of the work that they do. Very recently.
The Paylins have never donated a penny to DS or other organization, nor have any of them ever volunteered in any way to help these DS kids. All their money goes to themselves and POSTAGE. Sickening.

There's no way in Hades that a woman with 4 kids, one pregnant, and the youngest a DS baby, would have time to parent and nurture that DS baby. She should have made a choice. Stay home with the baby and care for it, or neglect it and gallavant the country pursuing the spotlight. She chose the latter.
ReplyDeleteNo woman could take on a VP run, campaign, travel, keep up appearances, govern, give speeches, book tours, bus tours, more speeches, reality TV shows, travel to CA, back to AK, then to AZ, and keep up that schedule. Something's got to give, and it was Trig that gave. He gave and gave and gave. No loving mother would burn both ends of the candle like Sarah did, and think she could have it all. The kids suffered, her marriage suffered, and her life is a mangled mess.
I am trying to gain some perspective about Palin's revelations. First, I realize that only the most ignorant imbeciles could listen to this video and think "god bless Sarah with her servant's heart she so loves Trig". OMG

With all of the money they've grifted over the years and all the money spent on the hideous wigs and plastic surgeries, not to mention boats and snow machines, they could have hired the best early intervention therapists to work with their precious gift from God to maximize his potential from birth. ReplyDeleteWhy after 6 years do the therapists know Trig better than she does? She's been unemployed most of that time; she should have been sitting in on the therapy sessions when she wasn't out grifting so she could reinforce what the therapists were doing at every opportunity.
I read here regularly and comment occasionally. I get furious at the ignorant, hateful crap she spews, but as my mother would recommend, I "consider the source" and usually calm down quickly. But I have no idea how I'll fall asleep tonight. I'm enraged by this pig's abuse and neglect of Trig. Aren't therapists and child care workers obligated to report child abuse and neglect in Alaska? What a waste of the first 6 years of a child's life!

Haven't read the comments, but your're spot on, as usual. This poor, poor,poor kid has had his needs overlooked all these years that I'm appalled Sarah thinks this is heartwarming, a tribute to educators, or even something a mother should be proud of.
ReplyDeleteAnd what's missing from Trig? Glasses (to make him look smarter?) and hearing aids (so he can hear). His speech therapy is keeping him from becoming the best he can be. His food issue is keeping him from developing a healthy palette.
Someone needs to intervene, his parents and "older sister" are supposedly millionaires, yet don't care enough to give him the tools he needs to learn and interact with his environment. It's not difficult to find great help with these issues, but I fear it may be too late. Poor kid can't even sign, there's no excuse.
I think Sarah should think twice of what she "shares" because it'll come to the surface eventually, it always does.
I'm sorry for kids like Trig who are neglected. DS kids love unconditionally and with the proper help over time from when it's diagnosed, they can learn to be productive and live the best lives they can.
Since listening to Sarah's and Todd's recorded Wild Ride interview six years ago, I'm always skeptical about anything Sarah says. We don't know for sure that even today Trig is receiving care from a therapist. We just know that Sarah released a video once again using Trig to provoke sympathy that she can profit from.

Taping your I Hate the Black Man Who Won "interviews"? All that money you've made and you couldn't even hire someone to take Trig to a therapist on a regular basis? Shame on you.
It should be no surprise that Sarah didn't put a high priority on Trig's progress. I can't believe that Sarah herself was ever up to grade level when she was in school or that any of her children were successful students. They all show signs of neglect including Sarah. Sarah doesn't even know how to take care of herself.

ReplyDeleteOnce you become a parent, the State is in your business to be sure your child is cared for properly. Perhaps Her Heinous was turned in to CPS because Tri-G could not pass his K entry tests. Here in Ohio, the K kids are already signed up for class that starts in 2-3 WEEKS, and they DO take the kiddie version of aptitude tests to place them in the proper classes. My own son was so off-the-bottom-of-the-charts they couldn't even give him a score, so I speak from experience.

I also agree with someone else that this was probably triggered by the Special Olympic involvement by President Obama and Michelle Obama.
She will be infamous for this in the next week, just like she was with her Colorado speech but this will sound like neglect or worse to millions of Americans. It will take a little while, but I can't imagine how she can explain or divert the tsunami that is headed for her caused by what she said.

No jokes, nothing funny about this, no explanation possible other than she wasn't in her right mind when she said it. Even that won't fix the apparently easily proven or disproven things she said about what Trig hasn't had. Which according to her own words is a fighting chance from a family that had the access to the best of the best. All they had to do was do the right thing for Trig. No matter whose he is. They had the money. They could have grifted it for free on her connections. There is no excuse. There is no fix for Trigs lost years.
Sarah put Trig in preschool, and no one mentioned that it might be a good idea for Trig to learn to speak and feed himself? Are you kidding? Is everyone in Alaska so afraid of Sarah Palin that they don't have the nerve to tell her to get her kid therapy? Trig had an operation to seal a hole in his heart, around year one or two. Wouldn't the doctor ask what kind of therapy the child was getting? How does it go for 6 years and Sarah (who claimed to have read everything about DS) without any therapy, without his glasses, without being able to speak or feed himself? Wasn't Trig seen by one professional, a doctor, a teacher, anyone, who asked about his therapy?

DeleteI think that one of the most telling comments here was about the lack of doctor visits for Trig. If he was being seen regularly by a pediatrician, the doctor would have asked about his therapy and would have noticed that Trig couldn't see, hear, feed himself, milestones that all doctors are supposed to notice.

How come none of the people associated with that school, even if it was a private church school, how come they didn't discuss therapy with the Palins? If a child showed up in class with bruises, they have to be reported as possible child abuse. In addition to the Palin-Heath family educators, Trig was supposed to have interacted with other "educators," and none of them discussed therapy with Sarah and Todd? There is something so fishy about this story.
I don't think this kind of neglect fits the legal definition of abuse, even though it's clearly 'abuse' in fact.

This was personal for me. I know about the success of early intervention. A near and dear young one had muscle issues, sensory issues, vocalization issues, and eating difficulty similar to DS. His treatment plan was the same as for DS with speech therapy just one part of the early, intensive intervention. The ST was started when he was about 4 months old -- 3 times a week, with home exercises several times each day. The speech/eating issues were almost completely resolved by eighteen months.
Mrs. Todd Palin is abhorrent.

DeleteThanks for posting the transcript for everyone to read. It speaks miles about the neglect of Trig. He should have been getting therapy as early as possible, not 6 years later. Sarah used him as her prop, and she still is. The good news is that Sarah thinks that she was making a wonderful video about Trig, while she was finally revealing how little attention she paid to him. In the end, Sarah is always her own worst enemy.

MANY DS kids don't become fully toilet trained until their teens. This i know first hand. And they're working with Trig NOW on that. Heck, there are 5 yr olds without special needs who have accidents.

Sarah uhm maybe if Levi was still with Bristol and taking care of your responsibilities to parent and feed your children, then maybe Trig would not only be eating a Cheerio, he would have graduated from baby food jars and feeding himself solid foods?
So, rephrasing into English, Sarah, the expectation is that the family should just treat him as if he were a regular kid, and if that fails to go well, only then should they go groveling to outsiders who should just fix him in a couple hours a day?
