Understanding the Tea Party, not as a political movement, but as a religious one.

I actually did not expect to agree with this article by Daily Beast writer Jack Schwartz, but he makes some valid points.

See for yourself:

While a traditional political party may have a line that it won’t cross, the Tea Party has a stone-engraved set of principles, all of which are sacrosanct. This is not a political platform to be negotiated but a catechism with only a single answer. It is now a commonplace for Tea Party candidates to vow they won’t sacrifice an iota of their principles. In this light, shutting down the Government rather than bending on legislation becomes a moral imperative. While critics may decry such a tactic as “rule or ruin,” Tea Party brethren celebrate it, rather, as the act of a defiant Samson pulling down the pillars of the temple. For them, this is not demolition but reclamation, cleansing the sanctuary that has been profaned by liberals. They see themselves engaged in nothing less than a project of national salvation. The refusal to compromise is a watchword of their candidates who wear it as a badge of pride. This would seem disastrous in the give-and-take of politics but it is in keeping with sectarian religious doctrine. One doesn’t compromise on an article of faith.

This explains why the Tea Party faithful often appear to be so bellicose. You and I can have a reasonable disagreement about fiscal policy or foreign policy but if I attack your religious beliefs you will become understandably outraged. And if I challenge the credibility of your doctrine you will respond with righteous indignation. To question the validity of Moses parting the Red Sea or the Virgin Birth or Mohammed ascending to heaven on a flying horse is to confront the basis of a believer’s deepest values.

Consequently, on the issues of government, economics, race, and sex, the Tea Party promulgates a doctrine to which the faithful must subscribe. Democrats and independents who oppose their dogma are infidels. Republicans who don’t obey all the tenants are heretics, who are primaried rather than burned at the stake.

Like all revealed religions this one has its own Devil in the form of Barack Obama. This Antichrist in the White House is an illegitimate ruler who must be opposed at every turn, along with his lesser demons, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi. They are responsible for everything that has gone wrong with the country in the last six years and indeed, they represent a liberal legacy that has betrayed America’s ideals for the better part of a century. Washington is seen in the same way Protestant fire-breathers once saw Rome: a seat of corruption that has betrayed the pillars of the faith. The only way to save America’s sanctity is to take control of Washington and undermine the federal government while affecting to repair it. Critical to this endeavor is the drumroll of hell-fire sermons from the tub-thumpers of talk radio and Fox News. This national revival tent not only exhorts the faithful but its radio preachers have ultimately become the arbiters of doctrinal legitimacy, determining which candidates are worthy of their anointment and which lack purity.

Not only does that make all kinds of crazy sense, it all explains Palin's attraction to the movement.

These are the new acolytes of a pseudo religious movement adorned in political camouflage, seeking a messianic leader to show them the path to salvation.

Yeah, probably not going to be her.

The so-called "Tea Party" is the 21st century child of the John Birch Society, brought into the world by Charles and David Koch. I don't think that either of them has a religious cell in his body.

They probably don't worship any God, but they do worship their own crazy greediness and anything is OK to give them more money and more control. That is the same sort of fervor many have for their religions and the men they think are their leaders/gods. I see them as the leader of their Cult, without outright saying they are the sons of God, any god. They scare me to no end.

And, yesterday I saw, for the first time, a commercial on TV for Koch Industries -- all about how you may not heard of Koch Industries, but their products are all over the place. They are trying to get some good PR, I guess, and to build awareness of Their Brand, and name. Maybe next they will go public with their political "views" and who knows, maybe one will eventually run for some national office?

    2. Agree. And they run their political party as a religion. Really, this explains everything perfectly - and why attacking them on their principles will never, ever work.

As the Blues Brothers would say: '"They're on a mission from God".

At least - that is how they see it - and how their followers see it.

Anon at 5:44 am. Way back, one of the brothers (they are Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dee to me) ran as the Libertarian vice-presidential candidate. Since then, they have acted covertly only so that today very few people are even aware of their existence but they control much of the GOP. My northern Michigan two-term representative took money from the Kochs. Now why would they care about a two-bit politician from the UP of Michigan? He is a teabagger, of course, and a dreadful representative.

    4. Remember Sharia palin was a Mary Glazier protegee and Mary claimed to have "prayer" Mother Theresa and Princess Di to death! Spiritual Warfare. Of course Dear Willow was reported as saying to Sharia "mom quit praying that's so fake" or something to that effect...during the campaign (as her dad was pimping out Shay to the secret service) so yea, all their pious bullshit not swearing etc. is just that Bullshit.
      They worship money.
And the 7 mountain dommonists, although I think the palin family is more Scientology.... look at the video of Todd harassing a man at Valdez airport. Bristol taking pics of random people on her way back to Alassska from DWTS. Yep wouldn't that be something to find out they are "secret scientologist's" as well as teabagging bitchers!
Talk2action has all kinds of info on Domionist's
And there is a very good Scientology book that escapes me now....
Yesterday madam grifter was slammed by so many publications its not even funny. I expect the Kockbros will drop her soon.
B/c the whole family are frauds and fakes
      Smoke and Mirrors.
I say tax the churches! Charles Manson was a scientologist before it was a "Church" just sayin'. They are masters of twisting things around and distorting the message. I think we have seen that type of activity. Haven't we?

Nobody will convince me that ANY member of the PayMe family is truly religiousNancy French can put biblical quotes on the Bristles blog, but it will NEVER convert "easy lay" Bristles. They use religion as a tool, trying to convince others that they are decent people. They are not, they are grifters, living off other people's money.

I agree - TAX churches! Some of them are the worst - Jerry Prevo's in Anchorage, AK as an example - Baptist. They strongly Influence their parishioners in government - local, state and national levels!

Isn't there something about church and state somewhere in our history?

I don't know. I think Palin plays a pretty fine messy-anal leader. Their other option is Cruz, who already thinks he's God, Rick Santimonious, who sleeps with the dead, and Mittens, whose church is sure he's the new God. Please proceed, Tea Party. So far, your destruction of the GOP is going swimmingly.

All the named above have given the religion of 'Christians' in America a nasty name!

I know numerous folks that live in my city that are not Christians and never will be! They live very good lives - giving to others - volunteers, etc. They do NOT spread hate, fear, anger or racism! (as do the Christians!)

From the outside looking in, I'm going to suggest that the foundation of the TParty is hatred of "the other" and of progress in in shape. Where religion comes into it is every Sunday in the churches of the teavangelicals, the born agains, the Dominionists. The congregations are led to believe everything their pastor drills into them. Long past time for religious institutions to be tax exempt. And how can there possibly be 75+ "churches" in tiny Wasilla?

I live in WA state, in a tiny suburb of Seattle. Just within 1/2 square mile (IF even that big...) we have NINE different churches. (Actually, there might be more by now - I haven't counted lately...). I have not included the town itself - this is just in the unincorporated area

Wasilla is the major meth area of the State of Alaska.

Sarah Palin belonged to a cult in Wasilla before she ran w/McCain...she was shown w/the head of it driving the devil and/or evil spirits out of her or something like that! Don't think it worked worth a damn! (As has been proven time and time again throughout the recent years.)

Agree with this article, BUT, IMO, the cultish aspect only started because there was a black President in the White House. I believe that set it off for an element in the Tea Party. It's obvious when reading commentary in even christian sites. Their illogical efforts at blaming him at every turn for every thing proves that their not even concerned with the spiritual element of anything. Their hatred is so obvious in their words.

Hearing this fringe talk about their uncompromise of governing because of religious issues has only crept up recently, say, since November 2008. I believe the unspoken qualification of a tea partier is that they are uncomfortable with colored skin. And, then they suddenly become soldiers for the gospel so they can fight society under the guise of religion.

There are some who would see the Tea Party as a branch of Christianity, but I would dispute that. When I look at the Tea Party, I see a modern religion carved from Gnostic traditions. Like Gnostic traditions, there’s significant overlap with Christianity, but their interpretation of the Bible is one colored by “hidden knowledge” (the apocalypse, the Rapture, and their “literal” interpretations — see also their various interpretations of the Constitution). I would narrow it even further; their notion of a “sinful, fallen world” and their unflinching cling on “hidden knowledge” suggests to me that they’re a distant branch of the Manichaeism.

In any case, their worldview is certainly Manichean. There’s little doubt there.

"hidden knowledge" is called "Occult". Are you saying the baggers have "Occult" knowledge? I just don't see it? I've studied some gnostic stuff and the bags don't fit. But the Spiritual warriors fit under
pray the gay away or pray their enemies away that is "Black magick" pure and simple.
Not "occult" hidden knowledge. I haven't read your
article yet, so I may have to retract my statement :)
ha! Yea, I don't agree with the gnostic part but Cult yes! Greenscreengranny Sharia Heath wants to be the queen.
I do think they take the revelations "LITERALLY" I don't think most of them have the intellectual where with all to grasp the "hidden knowledge" if any contained there. JMO.

Although I agree with the article, Palin is far from God-fearing or religious. She's using those people to grift money & live for free. She's like the Tammy Baker & Jimmy Baker type, or the pastor who sexually abuses children in the name of God, who plays with people's emotions to get FREE STUFF. She's evil.

Dubya had a daily phone call with Hagee, the minister who was caught with meth and a male prostitute. He had a mega church in Colorado. He is STILL trying to work the religious angle to live off. PayMe is just like him, religious in name only, when it suits their purpose. Hopefully, the wheels are coming off $carah's bus, and her downfall will be swift.
