Alison Lundergan Grimes, Democratic candidate challenging Mitch McConnell for his Senate seat, has new ad featuring a gun. I usually hate these things, but this not so much.

Courtesy of Politico:

“Mitch McConnell wants you to think I’m Barack Obama,” she narrates as she’s shown firing a shotgun. “Mitch is the same guy who thought Duke Basketball players were [from the University of Kentucky]! Or who’s attacking me on coal after doing next to nothing while we’ve lost thousands of coal jobs? He even said it’s not his job to bring jobs to Kentucky.”

Then she talks straight to camera.

“I’m not Barack Obama,” she says firmly. “I disagree with him on guns, coal and the EPA.”

Finally a photo appears on screen of McConnell speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this year. He carried a musket on stage to give as a gift to retiring Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn.

“And Mitch, that’s not how you hold a gun,” says Grimes, before approving the 30-second message.

Okay I have to admit that when I first learned that Grime had made an campaign commercial featuring a gun, I was all ready to rip it to shreds and criticize her for lowering herself.

The first thing that I noticed is that the ad clearly shows Grimes firing at skeet targets and hitting them. In a lot pt ads you see the candidate fire the weapon, and then there is a close up of the target getting hit.

But you are really never convinced that the bullet that hit the target is the one fired by the candidate.

I call this the "Sarah Palin effect."

So not only does Grimes demonstrate quite effectively that she is comfortable with guns, and has experience firing them, she also uses this ad to point out her opponents less than convincing red state credibility and awkwardness with firearms.

Grimes is running in a deeply red state, so she is not going to be the kind of Democrat that east coast liberals identify with, but she may be EXACTLY the kind of Democrat that can take McConnell's Senate seat out from under him.

  1. Really, I am getting sick of listening to red state democrats having to disavow the president to win in states where the presidents policies have helped their slack jawed constituents.
Grimes could shoot all day but it still won't make the majority of
idiotic voters in her state understand self-preservation.

Couldn't agree more. "I disagree with Obama on guns" -- what specifically? All his attempts to take guns away from people? Oh wait, he hasn't done anything about guns. She disagrees with him on "coal and the EPA"? So she's a climate-change denier?

  2. I too, am tired of seeing Democratic candidates distance themselves from the Democratic party and its principles.

Surely they could find ways to support their constituents while also (if subtly) making a stand for improving the lives of those same constituents.

Goody for Allison. She supports the coal industry. Does she also support putting her state in the forefront of those moving to alternative energy research, development, and production? Does she support increased efforts in education and funding in those areas?

Or does she plan to just encourage her constituents to stay right where they are while other states position themselves to provide the education and jobs of the future.?

She disagrees with him on the EPA? Well, that is just stupid if you are in a state with a dirty industry like coal and the coal company management that doesn't care how many employees they kill or how much of the state they destroy.

Yes, it's tough being a Democrat in a red state, and make no mistake, if she caucuses with the Democrats that is critically important, but it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth to listen to her and other similar Democrats.

She has also been noncommittal on the ACA/Obamacare which is simply inexcusable since the Kentuckians love their ACA state exchange (KyNect) even though apparently many of them are unaware that KyNect is the dreaded Obamacare.

So, no, sorry, not amused. I have no use, with the carnage dealt out daily in this country and the corrosive effect on our culture of the uncivilized gun-humpers, for anyone who feels they need to use a gun to prove a point or that it is clever to do so.

I agree completely. I fail to see how exactly the people of Kentucky would be better of if she wins. Unless she is just pretending to be a Republican in a Democrat's suit to win, and will emerge as a true D once elected. Who would do such a thing? Disagree with O re guns, how exactly? Wants to arm nuts, doesn't mind unarmed people being gunned down? I would have liked to hear something like: I love to use my gun for recreation and sport and I agree with the president that smart gun laws, while saving lives, would not affect my doing so.

Seriously? Accepting 'Third-Wayish' Democrats just because they have a chance to put a "D" on the board has been watering-down the Party for too long. It pushes PROGRESSIVE ideas to the sidelines.

She pulls a 'Judas' on the President, and walks in step with the NRA and the Koch brothers' agenda.

Okay, she shoots and hits twice as far as I can see (with some huge lighting changes between). Did she spend HOURS trying? (still, that IS better than granny palin...)
Sorry, but politicians shooting guns don't impress me. Are you trying to get elected for marksmanship? Have you any ACTUAL skills?

Whoopi Goldberg couldn’t get through asking about Palin with a straight face, and Rosie Perez jumped in with a few questions of her own. She asked Wallace, “One, what was it like when you first met her? Two, did the winking get on your nerves? And three, when did you want to just pop her?”

Wallace laughed a bit before explaining that the first time she met Palin, she was on Vicodin and had absolutely no idea who she was. And while Palin was “cool” at first, Wallace said, “Our relationship really erupted and exploded, and it was irreparably damaged after the Katie Couric interview when she thought I set her up for failure and I felt like the questions were pretty fair.”

Wallace has rather infamously expressed her frustrations with working on that campaign with Palin in the past, and her reaction to that HBO movie Game Change about the McCain-Palin campaign was that it was “true enough to make me squirm.”

Getting rid of the Mitch McConnell outweighs everything else. She's not perfect, but she's not Mitch.

Just as Alaskan Democrat Mark Begich must run a little more red than your average Democrat, so must a Kentucky Democrat.

    Women with guns are hot!!

Didn't you say Ashley Judd was going to be the next senator from Kentucky? Now you're getting desperate and hoping this Grimes woman can win the election.

It's not too late for Ashley to get her pretty face back into the race. Now wouldn't she be fucking hot shooting a gun.

Good job of trading off your beliefs because you're getting desperate.

It would be wonderful if Grimes won. It might make a dent in the Republican's long term seditionist plans in Congress.

I would love to see her beat the shit out of the old, nasty guy! He's pretty evil in the direction he takes in doing things.

And, wouldn't it be fun to see the fact he has been after President Obama (on a daily basis!) since his first election - was a total waste of his energy? And, people throughout the country (and especially in Kentucky) are sick and tired of him?

Grimes is so far superior to Wasilla's idiot (Sarah Palin) it isn't funny. The idiot is a liar and fraud which has been proven multiple times throughout the recent years.

Texas Gun Lobbyist: No Need To Be Nosy About Guns On Kids' Play Dates

A Texas gun lobbyist affiliated with the National Rifle Association told an Austin newspaper for an article published on Friday that parents shouldn't worry about gun storage when dropping their children off for a play date.

"I wouldn’t ask it," lobbyist Alice Tripp told the Austin American-Statesman. "I would not think of it. It’s like asking, 'How do you handle your bug spray or a sharp, pointy knife?'

It is unfortunate that we progressives are having to constantly compromise and vote for candidates that are far more to the right than we are comfortable with, hello, Bill Walker for Gov here in Alaska, I've finally convinced myself to just hold my nose and vote for the guy, ONLY because he is NOT Sean Parnell. Remains to be seen how this works out, I don't hold out much hope that he keeps his word after getting elected, but once again, he is NOT Sean Parnell.

The right has gone so far to the fringe far right that yes, as progressives we are finding that we must vote against some of our hopes and dreams and desires just to get someone in office that is just "plain old right-wing" and not "crazy right-wing". If we keep holding our noses and doing this perhaps we can help bring the country a little bit more towards the center instead of where it is now.

I've decided to do my part, the only alternative is to not vote or write in someone who has no chance of winning.

Great ad! Hold onto your seat, Mitch. Not likely with candidate Grimes needing to demonstrate to you how to hold a gun in a cute ad. She still has a few more weeks to bitch slap you on jobs and health care. "Mitch McConnell's retirement party" Bye-bye you slimy old ancient grifter; too bad 'we the people' can't snatch your unearned benefits out of your retirement plan. But we'll be better than OK, if you retire.

Now you've got me curious - other than Elizabeth Warren, what Dem do you think Liberals from the east coast (or anywhere else) can identify with?

As for Grimes, if she doesn't agree with Dems on sensible background checks, an effective EPA, and she's as ass-backward on energy policy as Ronald Reagan was, let's just call her Murkowski and not pretend we're surprised when she announces she'll be caucusing with the Republicans.
