Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife found guilty of multiple charges. Another GOP star bites the dust.

Courtesy of CBS News:

Former Gov. Bob McDonnell, R-Va., and his wife, Maureen, have been found guilty on multiple counts of conspiracy, corruption and bribery.

Bob McDonnell was found guilty on 11 different counts relating to the conspiracy charges. Maureen McDonnell was found guilty on eight of the 11 conspiracy charges as well as one charge of obstruction of official proceeding that occurred during the grand jury investigation.

The jury reached the verdict after three days of deliberations. There was loud sobbing in the courtroom as the counts were read.

Sentencing has been set for Jan. 6, according to news reports. The couple could face years of jail time.

Yeah I bet there was sobbing.

I thought McDonnell staged one of the most cowardly defenses I have ever seen, where he essentially blamed everything on his wife and made sure they were never seen arriving or leaving the courthouse together.

I am not saying that his wife was without fault, but as the Governor HE is the one that was supposed to maintain the ethical standards.

Not only that but McDonnell was offered a plea deal that would have seen him convicted of only one of the charges against, him, and not the corruption one either, and allowed his wife to avoid any jail time at all, and he refused to take it.

You may remember that McDonnell, also known as Governor Ultrasound, was once touted as a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016.

Instead it looks like he might be spending some time behind bars where his prison husband can treat him just as shabbily as he treated his own wife.

Now let's see if we get a similar happy ending from the Rick Perry indictments.

Shameful. I never understood why he didnt accept the plea. What man doesnt go that extra mile to protect his wife from jail.

He threw her under the bus, backed over her, and then did it again.

    coward

He didn't take the plea because he didn't think he had done anything wrong. And according to the amazingly lax Virginia laws, he hadn't. So he truly believed it would never come to this.

I'm a Virginian, & his traitorous treatment of his wife was didn't fool any one. If they hadn't colluded & conspired about Johnny's gifts, they sure as heck did on their defense strategy. They were hanging their "Bitch Be Crazy" defense on the fact that SHE wasn't a public employee.

Remember, this all started because they screwed over the chef for the governor's mansion. NEVER screw over the chef.

Not surprisingly, Gryphen, you're completely wrong again!

This is the best thing that could've happened to that handsome lil devil. A few years in the hoosegow to get in touch with his feminine side, unload the old ball and chain, latch on to a new, improved (younger) ball & chain, write a book about the decline in American morals and you're looking at 2032's Comeback Kid! (I didn't bother to check to see if that's a presidential election year, so if it isn't, just add 4 years and that should be close enough)

Don't forget: American's have extremely short memory capacity and even shorter atten

Unbelievable that he wouldn't take the plea for just one count.

Since he's a hugely faithful and notoriously militant Christian, he is supposed to be setting the standard for his wife, and protecting her, and giving her guidance.

Bible says so, so that should settle it among people like Bob McDonnell who know what's best for everyone else, including making birth control illegal, forcing raped girls to give birth, and
keeping those brown and black folk in their place.

What a great example for the other fringe right Christians in the USA, who preach that women are supposed to cover their heads, remain silent in church, stay at home, don't work a job,
and submit to their lords and master..

Bible says so but I guess old Bobby boy was too big a coward himself, didn't set a good example, got greedy, and he let his wife get outta control, dontcha know!

If only law enforcement in Alaska was so diligent about getting the criminals like Palin and Parnell convicted!

Yes, he is such a "christian" that he is living with a priest convicted previously of "lewd" acts. I'm betting he's a bottom.

At last.....this is what should have happened to the Wall Street thieves and the Bush team. Prison time for decades, and not those country club prisons...let them find out how the other half lives. The arrogance of those 2 are on full display, I hope Rick Perry, Scott Walker & Chris Christie followed this trial....better be treating their staff better cuz u know it comes back to bite u in the ass. Their kids are just as bad, I don't feel sorry for any one them...knowing that plea deal was a generous protection for his family. Coward doesn't come close to describing this scumbag.

  10. Rachel Maddow has a great piece on her blog.
Yep, another family values man bites the dust.
He came to fame by aligning with Pat Robertson and the Evangelicals. Went to Regents U law school.
He could have avoided all of this by accepting a sweetheart of a plea deal.
So instead, he is going to prison.

His background of establishing himself as an ideal family values candidate makes his defense strategy more despicable.

McDonnell testified that he was "astounded" upon learning wife had secured a $50,000 loan from Williams, but didn't ask her to return it to avoid another fight.

He claimed to have "no idea" the businessman took her on a $20,000 shopping spree in New York.

But he said he was aware of gifts, including $15,000 Williams gave the McDonnell's daughter for her wedding reception, and a vacation at the businessman's lake house that included the use of a Ferrari.

"At some point, I'm entitled to be normal," he said.

What in hell does Bobby Boy mean by ENTITLED to BE NORMAL!???

ENTITLED is my favorite work today ! :)

Us little people don't get big vacation houses with Ferraris, and Rolex watches, and $20,000 shopping sprees, so I guess that's normal for the important folk like Bob and Maureen.

I guess the normal thing is to just take lotsa gifts or favors from your rich buddies in exchange for helping them to get whatever they want while your Governor. Ring any bells $arah?

This is off topic, but it relates to another GOPTP crook - Alaska's own Senate candidate - Dan Sullivan. Have you seen the news of this investigation? I suspect it's just breaking.
Went on ADN.com & they don't have it covered.

She is dowdy and trash, just like Sarah, but Sarah was just like the both of 'em in that she tried to milk the system and the access her position gave her for all it was worth. Then she realized celebrity required less supposed work and effort and paid more. Who is Ricky Hollywood? Oh yes, back to the morally and fiscally superior GOPers, with the crony capitalism (Cantor and Wall Street) and vindictive abuse of power (Perry) and Parnell losing a voting rights case with Alaska's Natives, we'll finally see a backlash to the latest cycle of the GOP revolution.

Interesting story on the AP News wires

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Officials say they will look into a tax break for Maryland residents received by Alaska's Republican U.S. Senate candidate.
Alaska Public Radio Network reports that Dan Sullivan owns a home in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., and the Alaska Democratic Party chairman asked Maryland officials to look into Sullivan's eligibility for the tax break. It requires owners to say the home is their principal residence.
Chairman Mike Wenstrup questioned if Sullivan could receive the exemption while voting in Alaska.
Robert E. Young, director of the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, says he didn't get the letter yet but has a legal obligation to investigate the claim.
The Sullivan campaign declined to comment to the network, but his website says he considered his time outside Alaska a temporary duty assignment.

  18. Wasn't surprised to hear about all the weeping coming from the McDonnells. They really thought their craven strategy would work in court. They got the sentence they deserved. Now let's see if they get the jail time too, albeit in some cushy jail probably.

I watched a clip of them on Morning Joe. He had lawyers everywhere and his only comment to the reporters was: "I place my trust in the Lord". Oh yeah? Why'd you hire the lawyers? Moral support?
Of COURSE there was loud moaning as the verdicts were read. They showed some of the ahem "swag", rolex watches, lavish beach house.yacht vacations, additions to their personal residence. Free rides in expensive italian import cars, fine food, wine and greased palms for pet projects.

"Greed is Good" He should have dropped the ultrasound and taken the plea deal instead of going for the whole shebang of guilty prosecutions, I guess "the Lord" doesn't trust him as much as he does the Lord.

Hope they are thrown in "regular" prison not the federal country club. Of course while in prison they will "find Jesus" and be set to con the folks again when the get out.
