Ted Cruz warns that the proposed amendment to curb out of control spending on campaigns could get SNL creator Lorne Michaels thrown in jail. Say what?

If you can watch that clip with a straight face you are a better man (Or woman) than I.

For those who cannot stand the sound of Cruz's voice, here is what he said courtesy of Politico:

Sen. Ted Cruz says the comedy of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” is at risk and creator Lorne Michaels could be thrown in jail if a proposed Constitutional amendment on campaign finance is passed.

“Congress would have the power to make it a criminal offense, Lorne Michaels could be put in jail under this amendment for making fun of any politician. That is extraordinary. It is breathtaking and it is dangerous,” the Texas Republican argued on the Senate floor on Tuesday, with a board of stills from the late-night sketch show displayed behind him.

“Well, NBC which airs Saturday Night Live, is a corporation,” Cruz said, who gave his own impression of Dana Carvey as President George H.W. Bush.

“I grew up watching Saturday Night Live, I love Saturday Night Live. Saturday Night Live over the years, has had some of the most tremendous political satire,” the senator said. “Who can forget in 2008, Saturday Night Live’s wickedly funny characterization of the Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin?”

“It was wickedly funny and also [had] a profoundly powerful effect on people’s assessment of Gov. Palin, who’s a friend of mine, ” he added.

According to Cruz he also reached out to former SNL alum, now Senator, Al Franken who tried to explain the actual impact of the amendment, but obviously that only served to confuse Cruz.

To be clear this amendment says NOTHING about free speech, or the ability to lampoon politicians.

It is solely focused on campaign spending by corporations with deep pockets who are able to spend millions of dollars in local and national campaigns in order to ensure that their chosen politician wins.

Okay I am beginning to think that this whole schitck of Cruz's is some long drawn out Tea Party performance art that has him saying and doing crazy things simply for attention. And then at some point he will stop in mid sentence, reveal that he was hired by the Democrats to troll the Republicans, take a bow and walk out of the Senate chamber mumbling to himself, "I really cannot believe they bought that act."

It is either that or this guy is actually under the impression that he is a serious politician, and has plans to further this political career by taking a run at the White House.

Which one sounds less crazy to you?

The irony is that the majority of SNL's skits of Palin were accurate portrayals of her. Thanks to Cruz I can't forget Palin's fictional claims to foreign policy citing living adjacent to Canada and seeing Russia from land in AK.

Palin's word salad spinning fiction was a rope she tightened on her own neck hanging her.

Poor example for Ted to use because her interview will be shown again and again and SNL's version simply reiterated Palin's idiocy. Ted is a great friend of Palin lol

As a graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School, Cruz knows well that Saturday Night Live comes under the fair use doctrine. It's comedy, satire, editorializing. If he says that NBC couldn't broadcast SNL, what about the network that broadcasts Rush Limbaugh, or what about Bill O'Reilly? Should Comedy Central be taken off the air?
Cruz knows that he's spitting out lies, but he's as cynical as the rest of the right wing, and figures that low information voters will take his word for it without thinking it through for themselves.

  5. It sounds as if Cruz is afraid he'll lose most of the campaign funds he'll be getting from the Koch brothers for his next re-election. Who knows, without it he may not be able to win his re-election, or be able to fight for legislation to lower government regulations on businesses that the Koch's brothers expect him to do in order for him to receive their campaign funds. I bet the Koch brothers even wrote the script for Cruz so he would say exactly what they wanted him to say.

He couldn't interpret Green Eggs and Ham correctly and everyone is surprised he has 'trouble' comprehending a Constitutional amendment.

Good news in Michigan-goodbye to teabagger Terri La La Land

GOP Scuffling In Swing State As Democrat Gary Peters Up 10 Points In Michigan Senate Race

A poll released by the Detroit News on Tuesday gave Republicans some bad news regarding their efforts to overtake the Senate from Democrats in November. Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) currently holds a ten-point lead over Republican Terri Lynn Land, 47% to 37%, in Michigan’s open US Senate race. Republicans were hoping to flip this seat red after longtime Democratic incumbent, Sen. Carl Levin, announced he’d be retiring at the end of his term. With the popular Levin out of the picture, the seat appeared vulnerable due to Michigan’s status as a swing state and President Obama’s middling approval numbers.

However, Land has proven herself to be an awful candidate. US News and World Report ran a story about her on Wednesday pointing out how she has been essentially invisible on the campaign trail. Even though she has run millions of dollars of ads on TV and radio, she has not made herself accessible to voters or reporters. Land has not made many public appearances, and she has, thus far, refused to debate Peters. Apparently, she is very uncomfortable with anything that is unscripted, whether it is answering reporters’ questions or meeting with everyday voters.

The article highlighted a moment a few months ago where she and Peters both appeared at a conference, and she lashed out at reporters for asking too many questions.

After Land had backed out of a debate this past Monday at the last minute, the Peters camp placed an empty chair on the stage, hearkening back to the infamous Clint Eastwood speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

isn't it interesting the way these "Constitution-loving patriots" always avoid being questioned or participating in debates?

It's as if they're afraid someone will ask them a question about themselves or their platform they should know the answer to, but don't, because everything they present about themselves as a person and what they claim to stand for is all just a fraudulent grift...

    2. She sounds like Sarah and the way Sarah would run her campaign if she ever thought she had any kind chance at all to be nominated. Most people who know anything at all about Sarah knows she'll never run for an elected office again, and most people also know she'll never give up her grifting to run for office.

Maybe if Palin is watching this race she'll see the writing on the wall that this type of campaign doesn't work and she would have to face her greatest fears, a debate(s) with her opponent, and being asked real questions by reporters along with follow up questions to her answers.

I did not know that Lorne Michaels was in prison for all those years before C.U was passed.

What the hell is the matter with him? Does anyone really take anything he says seriously?

I can't believe that people eat this shit with a big spoon and like it!

BOO! Be scared!! Fear everything. Fear everybody! Jesus Christ, fear mongers and the fools that actually believe them.

I wonder if Ted Cruz is simply a very cynical bastard that has figured out how to play the (politics) game and has absolutely no moral fiber in his being?

I wonder if Cruz has figured out what the simple-minded fools in the Tea Party want and panders to the NASCAR/Pro Wrestling/Roller Derby crowd because it is so easy - as long as one is willing to get slimy?

Could it be possible that Ted Cruz's only life skills are lying and cheating and thus, politics is the obvious area in which to practice his skill-set?

On a different note: would a cold-blooded sociopath do well in politics?

To be honest I can't even look at this guy....he is so damn ugly it doesn't matter what garbage comes out of his mouth. If I was a Senator it would be so embarrassing to be in the same room. The world looks at this and just can't believe it, we finally have this incredible man in the White House and our Senate & Congress is filled with the dredges of society. It can't be more obvious what states consistently elect them, the GOP breeds them like weeds.

Looks like someone read the primer on how to get yourself spoofed on "SNL". Senator Cruz, should you go back and see the clips of Tina Fey, she used Sarah's (your friend) word salad verbatim. (That's "fancy talk" for "Word for word"). That was the "Genius" of the clip, and you missed it.

See you on SNL!!! Lawyer Up!!!
