Alaska Senate candidate Dan Sullivan (R) was a Maryland resident for tax purposes while he lived and worked in the Washington, D.C. area from 2006 through 2008, according to the state's tax assessor.
The comments come in response to an inquiry from the Alaska Democratic Party into whether Sullivan properly claimed principal residency tax breaks while living in Montgomery County, Md. during that period.
Sen. Mark Begich's (D-Alaska) allies made the inquiry in order to draw attention to Sullivan's time outside the state. Begich and his allies have long sought to paint Sullivan as an outsider and undercut his state ties.
"It is the determination of the Department that Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan are deemed residents of Maryland at that property address for the period in question. Therefore, the property tax benefits received were properly granted," Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation Director Robert Young says in an email to the head of the Alaska Democratic Party after reviewing whether the 'principal residence' tax credits were properly claimed at the Montgomery County, Md. home.
The explanation for this by the Sullivan campaign is that he was working for the Bush administration between 2006 and 2008, therefore he spent the majority of this time in Maryland.
However it should be noted that many Alaskans work outside of the state for extended periods of time, yet they do not change their tax status if they are planning to return and make Alaska their home.
Both Lisa Murkowski and Don Young have worked in Washington longer than Sullivan has, and yet neither of them changed their resident status for tax purposes.
Which is interesting since many of Sullivan's recent ads are attacking Mark Begich for "being out of touch with Alaskans" because he has worked for the last six years in Washington representing Alaska (And accomplishing things like this for our people.), after having lived his entire life in this state.
And by the way, Sullivan's time out of Alaska actually extended from 2002 until 2009, during which time he served with the Bush Administration, which in my mind should all by itself remove him from consideration as a competent representative of the Alaskan people.
The guy is simply not one of us, he is a fucking out of stater.
He's defeatable on his record alone, and his intended way of 'leading.' He's Alaskan enough. But the lying and disingenuousness is Miller and Palin caliber.
ReplyDeleteI have been wondering if Dan and family claimed PFDs' during the years in question. Does anyone know??
ReplyDeleteVery important question!
DeleteAlso, did they pay property taxes as residents or as from out of state?
DeleteVery important questions, I'm willing to bet he committed fraud.
I'm sure the Begich campaign is checking all this stuff out.
DeleteAnd Sullivan is not the ONLY carpetbagger the GOPsters are running. Scott What-State-Am-I-In-Today? Brown is another, as is Pat My-REAL-Home-Is-In-Virginia Roberts, for whom Ms. Sarah campaigned. By the way, just read today that the Kansas tea partiers are mighty upset about Ms. Palin's endorsement of carpetbagger Roberts: http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/senate-races/219400-tea-party-revolt-puts-kansas-at-risk
DeleteI am guessing there are many other phony-resident GOPsters running for office as well, including GOPster and Scott Walker friend Kathy Myalls, running for state legislature in Illinois, who recently voted in TWO DIFFERENT STATES, a la Anne Coulter (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/08/ann-coulter-under-investi_n_165007.html) and others: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/kathy-myalls-vote-illinois-wisconsin Then of course there is GOPer Leslie Rutledge, who voted in both Arkansas and yet tried to vote in other states as well: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/leslie-rutledge-arkansas-multiple-voter-registration. The GOP: pretending to be God by attempting to be omnipresent at every ballot box.
Wonder whether the Palin curse might end up not merely negatively affecting a single candidate, but turning the whole state of Kansas partially blue????
" “Now, I — at this point in time, I don’t have a team of people, you know, getting out there doing these poll-tested whatever they do to let you know if you should run or not. I don’t have any of that kind of organization going."

Translation: "I'm waiting for someone else to do all the hard work (like in 2008!) and then pluck me off of my snowbank/cactus, plop a tiara on my head and call me madam president. And then adoring crowds will follow me everywhere and throw money at me!
Nefer, you NAILED Her Heinous perfectly!
DeletePick me! Pick meeee!! Pick meeeee!!!
Sorry $arah, your days of being chosen for anything other than Brawl Master are over.
JJ
No one will pick Sarah Palin to run for any office anywhere and especially in the State of Alaska! We are wasting our time even talking about her.
DeleteIf the Teabaggers run a candidate, it will be Ted Cruz - not Sarah Palin!
I wonder if he voted in Maryland too. I also wonder if he received a PFD check during this time period. No doubt, Senator Begich and his campaign staff are researching these issues as well. It would also be interesting to know what State he listed on his tax return during the period; Maryland has a State tax while Alaska does not.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to know, since he claims his wife is a native, do his kids get free health care while he has stated he will vote to deny health care to others (i.e. repeal Obamacare).
From the sounds of it, I would opine that Mr. Sullivan wants it both ways. Well, don't give it to him Alaska. Vote for your native son Senator Begich.
I don't normally offer my two cents on an election in another State, but since the Senate majority may well ride on this election, I think all Americans have a dog in this fight.
“Yyou never say never,” Palin told Fox News’ Greta van Susteren ... I don’t have any of that kind of organization going. I’ll never say never.”
ReplyDelete---------------------------------------------
In other words, "Hint, hint, hello, someone out there want to take care of this for me? You know, just enough to get the money train back on the tracks."
Sarah -- you might ask your mother to add a few new words to her day....
ReplyDelete"cliche" is a noun.
"cliched" is an adjective.
So, you'd correctly say "It sounds cliched," not "cliche."
"It " is the subject and "cliched" is the adjective.
As with so many other mistakes you make with the English language, you simply weren't paying attention when this phrase was used, with the "d" on the end.
You sound uneducated when you use "cliche" as you did.
Sullivan is nothing more than a slime bucket and a Republican politician that CANNOT be trusted! He is NOT truthful and should NEVER be elected to any office in Alaska!
ReplyDeleteHe looks right in your face and will LIE!
Vote for Senator Mark Begich, Alaskans. He as seniority in the U.S. Congress and has been working hard for Alaskans for many years!
Sullivan is your typical lying conservative just like Palin. I too, I'm voting for Mark Begich.
DeleteHa! And she's wearing the same old black pants and the see-though blouse. The grown old woman and grandmother continues to wear her daughter's clothes and thinks she's cute. tsk tsk tsk
ReplyDeletePoor poor $carah....And I can't wait for the next family brawl in which she and her daughters will fight over who's wearing what and who's pants belong to whom. LOL
ReplyDeleteHuffington Post is running an article on Sullivan too! He's showing himself to be a liar across the nation! Should we really be surprised? He's a typical Republican in our world today!
ReplyDeleteAlaskans should get the word out - provide proof sources and reelect Senator Mark Begich in a landslide!
I'll bet that when Sullivan loses, he'll head back to D.C., Maryland, Ohio or wherever! He is not an Alaskan!
PLEASE, Alaska, don't fall for it.
DeleteVote Begich!
He grew up in the same county I did -- and I'll always consider myself an Ohioan.
ReplyDeleteJust sayin'
I remember that too.
DeleteHowever I was not a New Yorker and my opinion in that race did not count.
I AM an Alaskan so my opinion and my vote count in this one.
I remember when Hillary was a big ole carpetbagger. Double standards anyone?
ReplyDelete10:01 - Relevance? Are you saying that Dan Sullivan is a former First Lady?
DeleteHillary moved TO the state of New York with her husband after his term in office was completed. During her term as a New York Senator, there was no time when she was actually living in a different state or claiming another state for tax purposes. Moving to a state and planning to stay there is legally totally different from claiming to reside in one state while having your permanent residence elsewhere, and simultaneously taking advantage of the 'else where's' tax laws. Two totally different things. If you can't understand this, go to law school and take a course in Conflicts of Law. I did (I am a lawyer), and I know whereof I speak.
Delete12:30 a law degree and 99 cents will buy you a cup of coffee. "I'm a lawyer" ohhhhh so impressive. Guess what?- don't give a shit you are a lawyer, anyone can be a lawyer these days. In my profession, as a professional, I deal with lawyers all the time and most are total morons! Hillary Clinton was a fucking CARPET BAGGER in every true meaning of the term. Everyone knows it. Google 'Hillary Clinton carpet bagger' and you will find endless articles on the subject. So sue me lawyer douche, and kindly GFY!
Delete1:11 PM You sound like a real sweetheart! Not!!
DeleteO/T - Alaskans or those who know Alaskans. Although the quarterly deadline has passed last night, Dave Peiser wants to beat Darrell Issa this Nov. He's trying to get donations from every state so it can become a national news story that America wants Issa removed. Issa is the one who is trying to privatize the post office and is most recently known for "Benghazi!" hearings. Peiser also needs a donor from Louisiana. Check here for more: https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/page/nationalmandate
ReplyDeleteA donation like $3 would do it!
I live in Maryland. The reason Sullivan did this was to achieve a discounted tax rate, a benefit designed to make home ownership more affordable for lower income homeowners. People who can barely afford one home. It has been abused by many who own multiple homes and are just to cheap to pay the taxes that support the community they live in.
ReplyDeleteDan Sullivan doesn't care about supporting his community.
Don't vote for him.
It is so apparent that Sullivan is out for himself! Nothing more and nothing less. He would be very bad for Alaska! Run him out of the state, Alaskans!
ReplyDeleteI checked the PFD site. It shows all applicants from 2009 (maybe earlier if you dig farther)
ReplyDeleteDaniel Scott Sullivan applied 2014, 2013, 2012.
Two Daniel Scott Sullivans applied 2011
No Daniel Scott Sullivan for 2009, 2010
https://pfd.alaska.gov/DivisionInfo/ApplicantDatabase
https://pfd.alaska.gov/Eligibility/EstablishingResidency
"In evaluating whether an individual claiming Alaska residency has demonstrated intent to remain indefinitely in Alaska, the department will consider whether or not an individual has:
taken steps to establish Alaska residency and sever residency in a previous state or country;
ties to another state or country that indicate continued residency in the other state or country; and
taken other action during the qualifying year, through the date of application, that is inconsistent with an intent to remain in Alaska indefinitely."
From what I read in this post and what I've found I would say Sullivan did not file for PFD while claiming residency there.
If they can find any reason to suspect he filed while not qualifying that not only is a crime, but it's one of those unforgivable things in the eyes of Alaskans.
Taking a full-time job in another state is a reason to be disqualified for the PFD, even if ALL other items indicate you are a state resident.
However, I believe there was a change in the laws a few years ago to allow for some political office holders to work in D.C. since they were working for Alaska--I'm not really sure. Just have a memory of some such thing and am throwing that out there since it could be relevant.
That's all her hate coming out.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that Lisa Murkowski came out in support of this jerk in an ad currently running in Anchorage. She tells everyone Sullivan worked diligently on abuse of women when he was AG! Which is a huge lie! Alaska is rated #1 for rape in the country....he assuredly didn't do a damned thing that helped the women of Alaska!
ReplyDeleteSullivan is anti abortion and contraception too!
Murkowski will have to eat her words when she comes up for reelection. She damned near lost the last time and will have another difficult round.
Alaska needs to turn blue. It's way past time to demote current Republicans and not vote in new members of their party!
Alaska needs to turn blue?
DeleteMy as!
Alaska needs to be independent from these state killing jobs!
The government has way to much control as it is and we don't need to end up like California and Detroit!
Go dem go bk!
Heck look at our deficit started at 10.4 when Oblammer took office now it is 18 trillion!
What is better for us slaves?
Yes slaves as all us working people are as we work for some piece of paper that they print from nothing and you have to work for it or starve!
I say enough but I also think Miller would have been the better choice!
