Child abuse.

I have said it before, but I will say it again, there is really NOTHING you can tell an impressionable child more terrifying than that they are constantly being watched and judged, and if they do the wrong thing they will suffer eternal punishment.

There is no horror movie scenario that even comes close.

What has always bothered me since I was young is this theory of original sin. Adam took the apple (and Eve made him do it, so it's her fault). And of course, it was the snake (the devil) that put Eve up to it (so it's really the devil's fault).

So, a child raised in a so called Christian family is told from an early age that he or she is a sinner and always will be. How does one recover from that? Well, you go to church and give them all your money and maybe you will be forgiven. And of course you give up all your power to the minister/priest because he (it's always a he because Eve is weak) knows better than you and you must do whatever it is he says.

Anyone with eyes can clearly see that a newborn baby is the most innocent among us. And to say that baby is full of sin is blasphemy, quite frankly.

I actually believe in a higher power; call that higher power what you will. I even minored in religious studies in college (on the GI bill that most the Republicans voted against after WWII and again in 2008).

I must publicly thank my lucky stars that I was raised by Atheists. Thank you Mom and Dad. Thank you for not having me baptized. And I have never brought any of my children to church. It is up to them, as it was up to me, what to believe or not believe. What is most important is that we are good people with compassion who make an effort to help those less fortunate than ourselves. And of course, tell the truth; my father was a real stickler for the truth.

And my belief in a higher power stems from my seeing and hearing things that are not there from a very early age. One of my first memories is that of a man and woman standing over me watching me. So, I am either crazy or I am able to tap into another dimension. I prefer to think the latter, but it's okay to think me crazy. It doesn't matter to me if I am believed or not.

The sad, twisted truth about conservative Christianity’s effect on the mind
Research reveals religious beliefs can alter brain function, making us more prone to anxiety and depression

Marlene Winell and Valerie Tarico, AlterNet

This article originally appeared on AlterNet.

AlterNet “I am 30 years old and I am struggling to find sanity. Between the Christian schools, homeschooling, the Christian group home (indoctrinating work camp) and different churches in different cities, I am a psychological, emotional and spiritual mess.” –A former Evangelical

If a former believer says that Christianity made her depressed, obsessive, or post-traumatic, she is likely to be dismissed as an exaggerator. She might describe panic attacks about the rapture; moods that swung from ecstasy about God’s overwhelming love to suicidal self-loathing about repeated sins; or an obsession with sexual purity.

Sounds just like "Growing up Duggar"

From age zero, those kids in the Quivering movement are taught that they are broken sinners, who need help, and can't count on their own perception of the world

The Duggar kids, are even monitored for their mood, and if they aren't cheerful or having a good day, well then, they better get with the program, cuz Dog is watching them.

The Duggar girls in particular remind me of this Japanese guy that forces watermelons to grow in square molds:

Those girls are taught from day one that they are nothing but servants for Dad and Jesus.

They can't have friends Dad doesn't approve of, they can't go to school with any other kids, and they are surrogate Moms to a dozen younger kids because mom is in bed having had her 15TH BABY!

No Jessa, Jinger, Jane, Julie, Jemma, and JuJu Bean, you can't go to college, you can't have a career, you can't date anyone you like, you can't go to Europe for the summer, and you have to submit to Daddy until he can hand you off to another male that will treat you like chattel.

Well they can't have children being exposed to other beliefs or other people that may expose them to other beliefs. Education may teach them to think for themselves or deduce other ideas from what they learn.
It is straight up abuse to isolate children from the world and make them fearful of others with different ideas or cultural ways of life.

Well, to be fair, the protestant christians I've known all my life (and that is 29 years worth) aren't the types who teach that. They believe being good is the goal and when one is bad, one vows to be better. We accept all living things as flawed and capable of learning from mistakes, even huge mistakes or mistakes made multiple times

um, 4:25, would you please be so good as to explain where you get the idea that "...all living things as flawed and capable of learning from mistakes, even huge mistakes or mistakes made multiple times."

"All living things are flawed? How so? Why? Is it because things are always changing? Altering from their existing form?

And I can tell you right now that last part about about all living things being capable of learning, etc., is just plain garbage! INTELLIGENT living things, perhaps, may be, but not ALL living things.

Now, I will admit SOME christians live and act according to their faith, but the majority I have known are far from that level of faith. You must be a very lucky individual.

Sweetie Pie, the Prostestant Christians are the ones with the whackadoo offshoots, including the Mormons, the Dominionists, the Evangelical Fundamentalists, and the whole sorry lot.

And let me guess, those "flaws" can only be mitigated by religion? Thanks for proving the point of Gryphens article. I am sorry you were brought up to believe you were brought up to believe you were in some way innately flawed. I was brought up to believe I was strong, intelligent and could accomplish anything I chose to, but then my parents weren't brainwashed by religion to teach me that I was flawed from birth.

Like the Mormons? Wouldn't it be nice if they DID - and that they all went there - NOW?

I was fortunate to be raised by a disillusioned "Holy Roller" child; if I wanted to go to church, that was OK, but I wasn't forced to do so, and when I stopped going it wasn't even remarked upon.
When my own little one came home from the Sunday School Busride and asked if she was a "sinner", I told her no she wasn't, and then she chose not to go back to that school. Doesn't seem to have hurt her any.
I hate how Christianity (and most of the other religious philosophies) make women the scapegoat for any problems with humanity.

Some fairy tales in Religion are unforgivable. Raising a child to live in fear of anything, especially the pursuit of knowledge IS child abuse of the worst kind. We have a branch of the family that teaches their kids to live according to the bible, they believe in creationism, and women are inferior to men and that will never change. They sent their daughter to a bible camp type of university. I tried to keep her engaged in conversation at her graduation party, asked her "How are you doing?" She immediately asked her mom how she's doing and her mom yells from across the room "She missed the Deans List this year by fifteen points.....she's got to go to summer school and get right with the Lord" I didn't know what to say. Why were they having a "graduation" party for her? She's graduated College and can't answer a simple question for herself?
But lots of "Praise Jesus's" and plenty of trying to convert guests. We left before the cake and didn't touch nor eat anything.
