"Mommy's shot."

Courtesy of KJRH:

A Tulsa woman is dead after her toddler son accidentally shot her in the head, police say.

Christa Engles, 26, was pronounced dead at an area hospital just after 5:30 p.m. Monday after being transported from her east Tulsa home in "grave condition."

Police say Engles was found by the children's grandmother, who arrived home to find the victim in the front room of the house with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say it appears she was changing the diaper of her 1-year-old daughter when she was shot by her 3-year-old son with a semiautomatic handgun.

According to the news report the young child discovered the gun under the couch, apparently there were several guns in the house, and he accidentally shot his mother to death.

Afterward the child kept repeating the phrase "Mommy's shot."

Just another tragedy brought to us by the American "gun culture."

Guns are not tools.

Guns are not accessories.

They are instruments of death, and they need to be treated as such.

Before they prove that to people the hard way.

People with young kids typically child proof their homes. They put cleaning products out of reach of the young ones. They put safety caps in the electric outlets so the child does not stick their fingers in the socket. Why oh why do they not put guns well out of reach of a child.

And even without children, why would anyone put a gun in the couch. You could sit on it the wrong way and possibly shot yourself in the butt.

    1. It was under the couch, not in it.

Kinda like storing a gun under the bed.

Either way, pretty stupid. And hardly childproof.

      Guns KILL!
That is their only purpose, to kill, "something or someone" you can dress it up and say "protection" or "hunting" but its killing "something or someone or taking a life whether it be man or animal".
Guns should be insured like Cars are. Oh right...that would mean Congress would have to make a law, a "do nothing congress" that does nothing but sue the POTUS....oh youbetcha....

    Darwin wins again.
How horrible. Guns lying around the house with a three year old and one year old.
Wasn't there a scary movie about a saanic three year old who shot mommy and repeated 'mommy's dead?"
Maybe he is possessed by the devil, so it is ok.
Three year olds don't really have an understanding of death though. Mommy's dead - but was does that mean for me?
    Horrible.

    Under the couch... WTF

Do people really live with the kind of fear that would make hiding a gun under the couch a sensible idea?

Probably not hidden, but misplaced. This isn't fear, it's abject stupidity.

Imagine living in such a unsafe home where loaded weapons are within the reach of toddlers. I guess this will be labelled a tragic "accident", just like all the others.

Another really sad story thanks to guns.

  7. I wonder about the kid, though. He knew that Mommy was shot. How's he going to feel when he gets older and realizes that he killed her, and she was stupid enough to have a gun sitting around where a small child could find it? Talk about mixed emotions!

How many lives have been destroyed by this incident of unforgivable irresponsibility?

The mother is dead, the father has lost his wife and must now raise two children alone, the grandmother has lost her daughter, and the children have lost their mother.

And worst of all, that little boy will live with the guilt of what he did for the rest of his life.

I wonder if Wayne LaPierre could explain how "a good guy with a gun" could have prevented this tragedy?

These should be made into PSA's paid for by the NRA. Once again, the misnomer "accident" is used to soothe someone's conscience because we all know guns are made for one reason and one reason only, especially semiautomatics left loaded - to shoot mommy so daddy can marry his girlfriend.
