"Hands up, don't shoot." |
Five St. Louis Rams players took the field for Sunday's home game against the Oakland Raiders with a "Hands Up, Don't Shoot" pose that has been used by protestors in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country recently.
The five players who were shown doing the gesture on CBS were Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin, Jared Cook, Chris Givens and Kenny Britt.
The Grand Jury might have handed in its decision, but it seems this issue is far from over.
Those players are my heroes. They may be fined by the NFL but I think it was a good gesture to show support to the black community.
ReplyDeleteCops are ticked.
Deletestmt from StL Police Officers Association condemns Rams display
An excerpt:
I know that there are those that will say that these players are simply exercising their First Amendment rights. Well I've got news for people who think that way, cops have first amendment rights too, and we plan to exercise ours. I'd remind the NFL and their players that it is not the violent thugs burning down buildings that buy their advertiser's products. It's cops and the good people of St. Louis and other NFL towns that do.

Delete""Roorda" is SLPOA business manager Jeff Roorda, a former cop who was fired for repeatedly lying and falsifying reports and who now pushes his anti-transparency campaign in Missouri's legislature. You can read the full statement over at KSDK. "
That is awesome. And it is true. We have too many trigger happy cops who do not hesitate to shoot innocent people. They are suppose to protect the public, not murder them.
ReplyDeleteYAY!
ReplyDeleteStanding O... All the way.
ReplyDeleteI love the fact they did this! The issue is far from over as it's being referenced all over the world! That cop better hide his sorry ass for a long time to come!
ReplyDeleteI love that they did it too. The GJ verdict has been all over the news here in Ireland. It is not going away.
DeleteThis . . . .
ReplyDeleteDid they tip over and burn a police car too ?
ReplyDeleteNope, but some asshole klan cop who was probably sitting in the stands refrained from shooting them as they entered the endzone. Too many people in the way. He may have missed shooting some black people----and hit someone else. Then who would send him money?
DeleteIt is eerie to see protesters and police amid the aisles of the Trader Joe's where I get that great chocolate.
ReplyDeleteVery much not over, I assure you. But I'm hoping they'll re-open the schools Monday.
In some St. Louis school districts a majority of the children get free lunch AND breakfast because they NEED it. Although some churches are trying to provide meals, many kids don't have transportation.
DeleteThe schools were closed because in the sporadic nature of the turmoil, it wasn't a good idea to have kids on buses.
Trader Joe's is the poor man's Whole Foods. You get what you get shopping there, may as well shop Walmart.
DeleteHow odd to get a comment on Trader Joe's but ignored about the school situation. Interesting priorities.
DeleteProtesters just closed a Walmart in South County. Whole Foods doesn't seem to be on the hit list.
DeleteNow protesters are trying to get the South County Target to close. Usually they jump around the county more to confuse the police. New strategy tonight.
DeleteHey there 1:04, just because you and your family were out looting doesn't mean every one else was too. Now take your red neck and your hood and go home, m-kay?
ReplyDeleteGood for them, as I certainly question whether the Grand Jury fully did their job. Especially as the Prosecutor McCulloch is questionable (his methods, interpretation of the law, even Supreme Court Justice has question/s about McCulloch's method/s). McCulloch seemed more like a defense attorney. Darren Wilson got off way too easy.
ReplyDeleteGood for those football players! A great visual to show their/our frustration at the legal system when it comes to the shooting of black children specifically. It seems that maybe the Grand Jury was not actually given all the information on this shooting. Gee, wonder how that happened? An injustice for sure!
ReplyDeleteDon't attack a police officer and you probably won't get shot.
ReplyDeleteAlso seems to help if you have the good sense not to be born black.
DeleteOne of the photos of the scene showed a bullet hole from Officer Wilson's gun about six inches from an apartment window.
DeleteWhen an officer is aiming badly in a residential neighborhood, the bullets can hit you even if your skin is purple.
Interesting 2:24
DeleteI'll tell that to the Crawford man in Ohio, the kid walking up the steps to his apartment in NYC, the twelve year old in the park and the handcuffed kid in a cop car who magically shot himself in the head.
There is a long list---mostly black who attacked no one but disconcertingly got shot.
Get your head out of your ass. Or get your head out
of the cop's asses.
Seems that theory didn't work out too well for Tamir Rice, now did it?
DeleteBullshit Gryphen.
DeleteAnd that 12 y o in Cleveland. sitting on a park bench with a TOY? How exactly was he "attacking a police officer," before he got shot, 2:24p.m.?
DeleteEvery one of them deserves high praise for this sign of solidarity. Makes you wonder why that cop quote resigned end quote. Justice was denied the victim, but karma's a bitch.
ReplyDeleteThe comment thread is pretty disturbing here. Most of these troglodites say the thug deserved to be put down, and that looters should be shot, no question. Think of all those white mass murderers who had been captured by police in the heat of the moment who weren't killed, and brought to trial. If Brown were a threat or a thief, he never had a chance to defend himself in court - he's just dead.
ReplyDeleteIt goes to the fascinating neocon tcot meme that only they are Christians, Patriots, hard-ass workers and enjoy the privileges of freedom of speech. In short, so long as privileged people like the horrible Palin's and Teabaggers get to write the narratives and orchestrate the backlashes, all liberals, progressives, people of color, immigrants and poor deserve to die by over armed and undertrained gun enthusiasts and neighborhood watch assholes.
Exactly, look at all the care that was taken over the THUGS that defended Cliven Bundy and his ilk? What was the difference? Oh yeah, the Bundy defenders were melanin challenged. But with their "armaments"hey certainly presented a far greater threat.
DeleteMost of the commenters here do NOT believe that these killings are acceptable. We want to see things change in this country where people live to go to trial rather than having our "protectors" kill them because of their inbred hatred and fear of our fellow citizens. I do agree, however, that the Palins and Teabaggers should be shut up sooner rather than later as they are the idiots fomenting this hatred!
ReplyDeleteDamn, some of you take your sports ball people kind of seriously! Really, these guys are just sports ball guys, making millions for beating the shit out of other sports ball guys in order to make more money than most of you that idolize them will make in a life time, all the while being dumb hunks of meat that really aren't examples of anything except for brute strength. They were all black, of course they are going to make a stance, but their job is not to make racial or social commentary their job is to throw and catch a stupid ball and entertain the braindead masses so that they don't realize their lives are being stolen by the corporatists.
ReplyDeleteThey are also human beings who have empathy for others and are able to see themselves as more than what their job is.
DeleteHear hear 5:09. Spot on. These millionaires no doubt are more than pleased to have the protection of heavy police presence around their milllion dollar McMansion neighborhoods, protecting their belongings, valuables, and families from criminals just like Michael Brown.
DeleteAnd the fact that any of these men could end up dead at the end of a cop's weapon . . . .because they are living while black? And as far as what these men's job's are----when did you die and get hired at human resources for the NFL?
DeleteAngela, you can stop with the 'black' thing. We aren't buying it anymore. Blacks don't get a free pass on criminal behaviour just because they are black. Got it?
DeleteOr their kids, Angela. Look at what happened to the kid shot for playing with a TOY gun at a playground in Cleveland.
DeleteI wonder if we're coming to the point where toy guns are outlawed , but real guns are not - 1984 , just off by 30 years.
Your statement is inaccurate, most football players have a 3 point gpa's in college. Secondly if you know or study history, black athletes have always fought for social justice i.e. John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 68 Olympics, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul Jabar, Bill Russel just to name a few.
DeleteNo, only the Palins get a pass on criminal behavior. Got that y'all?
ReplyDeleteEVERY football (and other shorts teams should have done the same on Thursday and the whole weekend!
ReplyDelete
