The gunman who ambushed and murdered two NYPD officers as they sat in their squad car Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn vowed to kill police in a number of social media posts that vowed retaliation for the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, authorities said.
Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, wrote on his Instagram account: "I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs," hours before the killings, two city officials with direct knowledge of the case confirmed for The Associated Press. He used the hashtags Shootthepolice RIPErivGardner (sic) RIPMikeBrown. The post also included an image of a silver handgun and the message, "This may be my final post. The post had more than 200 likes but also had many others admonishing his statements.
Police said Brinsley, who was black, approached the passenger window of a marked police car at approximately 2:45 p.m. local time and opened fire, striking Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in the head. The officers -- one Hispanic, one Asian -- were on special patrol doing crime reduction work in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.
"They were, quite simply, assassinated -- targeted for their uniform," said Police Commissioner Bill Bratton during a news conference at Woodhull Medical Center, where the officers were pronounced dead Saturday evening.
As you can see I linked to the Fox News report on this because I knew they would put the connection to Michael Brown and Eric Garner front and center. And that is going to be the focus from conservative outlets going forward.
It is quite appropriate to report on those connections of course, but we all know that Fox and their Right Wing counterparts are going to make sure to focus on the shooters ethnicity and the online postings to suggest that the peaceful protests that have been taking place in New York and other places around the country are partly responsible for this shooting.
After all that is what they do.
And this gunman, who did a terrible and inexcusable thing, provided them with an early Christmas gift that they can now exploit in order to suggest that cops are dealing with animals on the streets and it is understandable that occasionally they utilize too much force in response to the constant fear that they could be murdered at any moment.
Shame the media can't be bothered to mention that he killed his girlfriend prior to going to NY to kill those poor policemen.

DeleteThis news is very sad and tragic, just as the recent spate of shootings by police of unarmed African Americans. Who knows? These policemen may have been the best of the NYPD. And now they're dead - senselessly.
Giuliani and his Fox pals should also note that the murderer then killed himself. So - four people dead: the murderer, two policemen and the murderer's girlfriend. Above all, what it says to me is that there are TOO MANY guns and that too few people care about the damage they do: to individuals, to families, to communities and to the country.

ReplyDeleteI have two handguns, a 30.06 and a shotgun. They are within easy reach in the event of a home invasion or people trespassing on my property. There aren't many instances in my life where I would need to call the police for any reason except to come pick up the bodies of those that were silly enough to try to mess with me or my property. I've let off a few warning shots in my time when people ignored my "No Trespassing" and "No Soliciting" and multiple "Private Property" signs. I'm a female liberal Democrat living in close proximity to a wealth of redneck morons that have no respect for anyone, their belonging or our properties, and I must protect myself against the idiots in my world that would like to cause me harm or try to mess with my stuff and trespass on my land. (I don't have kids so I don't have to lock up my guns....just wanted to add that for those that would take offense to my having unsecured weapons hanging about.) We joke in our house that "might leads to right" and we're able to take care of ourselves and not burden the State Police with the assholes that cause us trouble.

DeleteThis episode harkens back to the 60's for me. I remember when police officers were shot and black panthers were killed. There was racial oppression/violence....and it exploded. Today on our TV screens we see choke holds, witness being untruthful, etc. and denial/justification by authorities. Everyone these days owns a gun and feels their own right to shoot and ask questions later.
