Courtesy of HuffPo:
Days after the owners of Indiana's Memories Pizza made headlines for declaring they wouldn't cater to same-sex weddings, other companies have followed suit, this time in Georgia.
Flower shop employee Jennifer Williams told CNN's Gary Tuchman that she "couldn't" serve a same-sex couple who sought arrangements for their union.
"It doesn't mean that I love them any less, because I don't," Williams said. "You can still love someone even if you don't serve them."
So much for that whole "Tell them you love them with flowers" idea.
A second florist, Melissa Jeffcoat, felt similarly.
"I would respectfully tell them that I'm sorry, I just don't want to do it because of my beliefs," she said. "[Jesus] died on the cross for me, so that's the least I can do for him."
So to honor Jesus supposedly dying on the cross you would honor his sacrifice by discriminating against others? I think somebody skipped a chapter or two of the New Testament.
Interestingly, she said that she would willingly serve a customer who committed adultery, but not a gay person: "It's just a different kind of sin to me, and I just don't believe in it."
And there you have it. This has NOTHING to do with faith, and EVERYTHING to do with homophobia.
Jeffcoat's son, Carlton, echoed those sentiments, noting, "I serve a God who's higher than any Supreme Court judge."
Unlike Indiana, Georgia's so-called religious freedom bill died in the Congress.
Of course as demonstrated by these two florists, people don't need the state's permission to discriminate against others.
But hey, who needs legislation? After all according to them, it's God's will.
I wish we could drop the use of "homophobia". These people aren't afraid of homosexuals, they're bigoted against them. Let's call a spade a spade, and simply start calling them what they are: bigots.
ReplyDeleteFor example: "And there you have it. This has NOTHING to do with faith, and EVERYTHING to do with bigotry.:
Using the term "homophobia" makes it sound acceptable as if it is some sort of medical condition. It's not, so let's strip away the veneer of respectability and shame these bigots by calling them bigots.
(Warning: Crankiness Ahead) (It's not you it's me)
DeleteHow is "homophobia" deemed acceptable? What do you think bigotry really is? They ARE afraid; it is an apt and accurate label. Their fear manifests in a number of ways, primarily through hostility, but that phobia is the source of the bigotry; it's the root of it all.
Maybe it's just semantic hair-splitting, but there's my 2¢ Easter eggs.
"I hate the word homophobia.
DeleteIt's not a phobia. You're not scared.
You're an asshole." -- Morgan Freeman
10:03 AM, good point, and my question would be, just exactly WHY are they afraid????
Delete10:27 - They're afraid because they've been raised to ALWAYS be afraid of something. They're constantly torn between fearing someone because they're different and feeling superior because they're good, white, God-fearing Christian folks and those OTHERS aren't.
DeleteIf it's not the 'blah' people, it's the communists or socialists (even if they have no idea of what those terms even mean). Or it's the feminists, or the immigrants, or the brown Muzzlins. Or the Jews, or the Buddhists, or the atheists. Or the *gasp* LIBRULS!
Being afraid of homosexuals is just one in a long line of things that go bump in the night for them. They're like people who are constantly jumping out of planes, free-climbing on cliffs or swimming with sharks...always craving that amped-up sensation of adrenaline overload.
Thanks, 12:45PM, may I say that I went to church this morning, came home and opened a beer. I LOVED church since childhood, I also like beer. How sacreligious is that?
DeleteI've always been a rebel, I don't know why but sure it's from my upbringing, seeing the hypocrisy in my parents, and it's in the gene pool. Lucky me.
My point is that for every one of these people that come out spewing their stuff....politicians, eating establishments, florists, whatever...they do not live what they preach and are caught time and time again. STOP it.
The SarahPAC meme that Gryph posted above this thread is indicative of this and why I am SO critical. I'm not pumping people for money, holier than thou, nor leave my house without packing in fear of the boogeyman. I respect people of all walks of life and color. I just like beer.
Surely going to hell.
So they aren't allowed thr freedom of their opinions, and to live the way they want? And you call them bigots?
Delete1:57--
DeleteWhen "the way they want to live" jeopardizes or diminishes the quality of life for others, when their "liberties" consist of bullying, oppressing, and robbing others of their liberties for the sake of deep-seated fear and spite--the opposite of love (and decency)-- then yes, they are bigots.
Is this what you want? The power to deprive certain groups of people their basic freedoms, to pass laws that humiliate and trivialize their very human nature? And you fail to see why those groups and their loved ones, who only want the best lives possible, are fighting back?
No one is silencing their opinions, however sick and dangerous they may be. Their OPINIONS. It's their actions that are unacceptable.
Jesus didn't say one word about homosexuality, but he did say, "Judge not lest ye be judged." So all these "judgey" folks, going on about their "beliefs" is just pious stupidity / hypocrisy. And I guess they feel they can ignore that Jesus also said, "Love thy neighbor as thyself."
ReplyDeleteThe records of what Jesus said are of dubious authenticity. The best we can do is say something like "assorted translations of texts from assorted times assert that there was one or more men that said ..." .
DeleteQuoting a version of the King James bible as the actual words of Jesus is inaccurate.
It sure would have helped if Jesus had said "don't treat women like property". Maybe he did but had it censored out by all the men that manipulated the records.
DeletePeople use their interpretation of the bible to support their own twisted view of reality. It's the whole point of a having a bible, to use it as a weapon.
We can easily criticize these folks but the real criticism belongs with their pastors. They can't think for themselves so they simply follow the crap they hear in their churches. I can personally cite the case of a cousin-in-law who hates the ACA, because her pastor has told her and the congregation that it's BAD and against "God's will". Sickening, isn't it?
Delete"...a different kind of sin to me..."
ReplyDeleteMurders, pedophiles, child abusers, etc. are just peachy, I suppose.
Cue the "unlike ME, those aren't REAL Christians" do-nothings.
ReplyDeleteOh goody! Will there be a GOFUNDME started for those two florists too so that they can rake in a million dollars just like the Memories Pizzeria in Indiana?
ReplyDeleteI suspect some of these people are hoping to cash in on the "I'm a poor, poor, persecuted Christian" craze and make some easy money.
DeleteIn Indiana at some shut down pizza place:

Funny, I don't recall Jesus ever avoiding anyone or refusing to serve them because they were gay or any other type of "sinner".
ReplyDeleteRick
I wonder what would happen if a woman walked into their shop and said, "I believe in abortion." Do you think they would served them (after all they believe it is murder)?
ReplyDeleteHaving just come from Easter service, these people and those like them make me want to bang my head against the wall! They aren't Christian and certainly know nothing of Christ's teachings.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to sound sacriligeous, but she might as well have said "Jesus died on the cross for me, so I wouldn't want to let him down for gay's sake". Her own words sound just as ugly.
ReplyDeleteThe drug addled brains @ Sarah Palin Facebook are still in bed.
ReplyDeleteThey missed Sunrise service.

LOL
The money quote from the link Anon 9;38 posted:
ReplyDeleteGail Bannister, who is both a Christian and a lesbian, said that she was singing in front of the closed pizzeria because it allows her to show the community that people can live together despite their differences.
“We just have different opinions,” she said, “but that’s OK. We’re supposed to have different opinions. That’s what diversity’s all about.”
Thanx Anon, you beat me to it.
The Federal Government needs to squash the powers of these religions, before it gets out of hand. In Utah, 50 year old men have been entering into plural marriages with 14 year old girls because they believe that is what God expects. We have polygamous groups that are basically incestuous because they believe their bloodline is direct from God. If religious people believe, really believe that God wants them to sacrifice children, or to beat their wives, or to kill nonbelievers-are we going to give them passes to do whatever their voices in their heads are instructing them to do?

Sarah Palin To Save All The Anchor Babies From Mean Obama, Wait What?
http://wonkette.com/581806/the-fartknocker-report-sarah-palin-to-save-all-the-anchor-babies-from-mean-obama-wait-what
Palin's irrelevancy is interferring with Fartknockerz. 'Let’s see, which warmed-over, 30-day-old story should we choose for this week’s Sarah Palin Fartknocker Report'
Palin won't go to church, can't plan a wedding and fails at everything else she attempts. She is somewhat a mediocre success at stealing other peoples property.
And yet so many excoriate Islam at the same time as they seek to make Christianity our national religion?
ReplyDeleteThe ignorant fools in this post have never gotten beyond the "Jesus loves ME" part of Christ's message and have completely failed to comprehend Jesus' message.
One of my co workers believes in Islam and, amazingly, she gets along fine with everyone..... except for those who don't know the tenets of the religion. She's very easy to get along with, doeas her work and is very well educated and articulate. It's the radical christians who never read the bible and the radical muslims who never read the quoran that cause all the problems. I'm an ex catholic and belong to no organized religion, so I don't have a dog in this fight, but nine times out of ten, if there's a problem, the radical christians are up to something. As a muslim, she gets "Christ's" message and the christians don't.
Delete" "I serve a God who's higher than any Supreme Court judge." "
ReplyDeleteWell excuse me for living; it must be hard to be so superior. Looking down that nose at others is going to bite him in the ass.
That God he serves sure has some nasty priorities.
DeleteTweet:
ReplyDeleteSolomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. That's actually in the Bible. Refusing to bake a cake for a lesbian couple's wedding isn't.
Homoblivious - Not having the ability to recognize homosexuals as homosexuals; a lack of gaydar.
ReplyDeleteGrifters are using this to make a buck. Instead of ridicule, as an ecumenical agnostic I suggest we pray for them. I am pretty sure the FSM accepts requests from those of good heart but no "faith." And the FSM would be the logical deity for a pizza joint.
ReplyDeleteSo, if you so choose, join me in asking the great noodley appendage to open their minds and their hearts, or to stuff their mouths with mushrooms (perhaps the consciousness expanding kind would be helpful, but shitakes are nice too).
In cheeses names, onion.
G- Is there any way to have a 'like' button!? Agreed to all the posts above. Sad state of a nation we have. I wish I was in Norway.
ReplyDeleteThere's more to this Memories Pizza GoFundMe campaign than meets the eye.
ReplyDeleteThe page was set up by Lawrence Jones, a contributor to The Blaze television show. He's also been involved in something even sleazier than Glenn Beck's show (hard to believe, I know).
"However, his greatest claim to fame may be his work with Project Veritas, the infamous “conservative non-profit” spearheaded by James O’Keefe. "
I thought I smelled something nastier than week-old moldy pizza.

Yikes. And yuck. Thanks for the link.
