Of course Obama was our first gay president, in the same way that Clinton was our first black president. |
More Americans feel comfortable with a presidential candidate who identifies as gay or lesbian than with one who identifies as an evangelical Christian, according to a new poll.
The latest WSJ/NBC poll listed a series of qualities in a potential presidential candidate and asked respondents whether they'd "be enthusiastic," "be comfortable with," "have some reservations about" or "be very uncomfortable with" a candidate with each of those qualities.
The results revealed that Americans are actually quite open to having a gay presidential candidate. Sixty-one percent said they would be either enthusiastic about or comfortable with a gay or lesbian candidate, while only 37 percent said they would have reservations or be uncomfortable.
By comparison, respondents were a little less comfortable with the prospect of a candidate who is an evangelical Christian. Fifty-two percent said they'd be enthusiastic about or comfortable with an evangelical Christian running for president, while 44 percent expressed some degree of hesitancy about the idea.
Damn I love this!
Take just a moment to remember that Karl Rove used the issue of gay marriage to turn out the evangelical vote in 2004 which helped George W. Bush to win re-election, and you realize what an incredible change has taken place in this country in a relatively short period of time.
Just think, if the Millennials start turning out to vote in huge numbers we might see the first black president replaced by the first female president who will then be replaced by the first gay president.
Man wouldn't THAT be amazing?
Thank God I'm dead. |
Speaking of Jerry Falwell, don't deny yourselves Matt Cale's now classic 2007 send-off at Ruthless Reviews:

Again on the point of Falwell, he was never beyond stabbing an ally or friend in the back if there was money at stake, and not just the Bakkers:

Look, I don't care one whit about the President's sexual preferences - I just want an educated, rational person to lead the country in the 21st century.
ReplyDelete...which would exclude any evangelicals!
DeleteI can hear the sounds of the far right head exploding calling the poll as being rigged, phony, and created by the left. That’s, of course, with the exception of those who will even acknowledge such a poll exists. It seems that many in the far right are closed minded, especially the Palin followers, who have a lot of difficulty accepting any fact that goes against what they want to believe.
ReplyDeleteThey will see this poll as the "war on xtianity". How DARE others not agree with their religious views!
DeleteLindsey Graham may have a shot.
ReplyDeleteHe can drink as many shots as he wants, but he has no chance of being elected President.
DeleteFrankly, these kinds of fluff articles and polls are nothing but.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to see that attitudes are changing, but I can't see an openly gay candidate getting elected in the Christian States of Murica for at least another 30 years.
ReplyDeleteAn entire generation of old white patriarchal evangelical Christian supremacists have to die off first, imho.
Let's not forget that the Christian supremacists and the Teaparty are literally threatening civil war if the Supreme court comes down in favor of gay marriage.

There are entire states that will defy the Federal ruling, exactly the way they did to President Johnson and federal troops after the equal rights amendment passed in the 1960's

As remotely absurd as it seems to us now in 2015, it wasn't so long ago that whites and blacks couldn't ride in the same car together without risk of attack in the Southern states.
Blacks were routinely denied even the ability to VOTE go to many colleges, marry a white, or even eat in a restaurant , just 50 year ago , right here in the USA.
I know, because I witnessed all this in 1965 during a youth camp visit I attended in S. Carolina as a young teen.
The Christian Taliban is just as entrenched here as the Islamic extremists are in Muslim countries, and they will not lightly give up their prejudice and power over state legislatures.
As I've noted here before, the three Abrahamic religions are responsible for more war, crimes, murder, torture, slavery, and oppression than any other force in history. Hatred of gays is part and parcel of their self righteous blindness.
3/4 of the world's population worship sky fairies and believe in gods and prophets no more real than Tinker Belle and Santa Claus, and let those belief systems inform their politics, daily life, and law making.
On an evolutionary scale based on logic, education, critical thinking, care of our planet and species, rationality and global consciousness from 0-10, humans as a whole are about a 1, and that's optimistic.
I hope Jerry Falwell is spinning like a top and dizzy as hell...
ReplyDeleteMaybe he'll even fall into that "Lake of Fire" he's standing next to...
Slap a glitter tutu on him and Markus will have him DWTS ready in a week!

nttawwt.
Actually, on my white side I am related to him. While he was a do nothing president, he lived in an openly gay long term relationship for close to 20 yrs.
DeleteNo one cared, it was just accepted. As were what were commonly referred to as "Boston marriages" where gay females lived as man and wife, often one dressing as a male to support their families( women didn't have a whole lot of job options).
It's only a few short term periods in our history where someone being gay or not mattered, and those attacks have been lead by religious people.
I'm waiting for the poll that will say that having an Atheist US president is more popular than having an Evangelical or Mormon one.
ReplyDeleteIn France, religion is not publicly disclosed about presidential hopefuls. It's considered that as long as religion doesn't inform their politics, their actual religion is of little matter. One can find this info if one must, it's not hidden, but media will not report on it. Separation of Religion and State at its finest !
Let's keep dreaming !
Could a Rationalist or Secular Humanist be elected? Or will we always be under god?
ReplyDeleteSissy boi Obama has paved the way for future gay presidents
ReplyDeleteHey, it's Oy George! What have you been doing to keep busy since the vulture club broke up? Got a billy doll?
DeleteThat you Tawd? Still trying to convince that hag of a wife that your two-toned penis is gay instead of the fact you are just fucking your hookers instead?
DeleteI'm just curious, how did they get Mr Gluttony himself into a coffin? Did they use grease and shoe horns? Or did they let him decompose a bit until he fit. I prefer the latter. Until he came along with his bigotry, hate, and stupidity, I never truly felt hate for another human being. Seeing him again brought all that up again.
