3 year old kills himself with gun his mother carried in her purse.

Courtesy of CBS News:

A 3-year-old boy had been playing with a handgun he found in his home before fatally shooting himself in the chest with it, police said Friday.

In audio tape of a 911 call released by Hamilton police, a woman identifying herself as the mother of Marques Green said she carried the gun in her purse and had set her purse down after getting home.

"My son just shot himself, and I'm not getting a pulse," Elizabeth Green screamed Thursday afternoon. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'm not getting a pulse ... I don't think he's alive!"

.....

The woman told a 911 dispatcher the boy had shot himself "in the heart." The dispatcher gave her first aid instructions.

"His eyes are open, but he's out," Green said.

Police said the boy was struck in the chest and pronounced dead at a hospital shortly afterward.

"Oh my God! Marques, honey!" the woman shouted in the call.

TV footage showed a detective carrying a handgun out of the residence Thursday.

No doubt this is a gun that this woman purchased to keep herself and her child safe.

But guns are not designed to keep people safe, they are designed to kill.

And they do that with brutal efficiency.

    "Guns don't kill people..."

Wait a second, yes they do: guns kill people.

    People you hate
    People you fear
    ...sometimes, much too often, actually,
    guns kill people you love.

I wonder what she says today as the goes to the funeral home, to make arrangements....
And what will she put on the gravestone?
"Killed by mommy's second amendment rights"

Guns kill people just as much as ropes that are used for hangings, towels that are used for chokings, and keys that are used for stabbings. However, nobody needs a license to buy a rope/towel/key. Right?

The fact that a rope/towel/key can't decide on its own to be a deadly threat applies to guns, as well. The careless use of it by the owner is the actual "weapon." Anything at all can be used to kill, as long as the person follows through with creating a more than likely chance of that item being used to kill someone. I know of someone who collects fancy models of guns, but never buys ammo. He displays the guns in a large bullet-proof glass case on a wall at his home. He is beyond cautious!

She must have been carrying it with one in the chamber. I can't imagine a 3 year old chambering a bullet. I suppose it's possible, but not likely.

Why hasn't Obama weighed in on the Rachel Dolezal story?

Maybe he's embarrassed because he's a half black President posing as an all black President.

He's not posing. He salutes his white mother and grandparents. He calls himself a "mutt." LOL
But he looks black, so people assume he's 100% black, and he's married a black woman.

Oh, looky here, the voice of reason! First of all, wrong thread. Second, ask mommy if she emptied her gun and put it in a safe or at least put a trigger lck on.

Infuriating. We believe enough in big government to design Tylenol bottles so children can't get into them. But don't you dare do anything with a gun that could keep my child from shooting himself

Every time a conservative whines "The founding fathers never dreamed of gay marriage when they wrote the constitution" I want to scream "Did the founding fathers dream of three year olds shooting their parents, their friends or themselves when the wrote the second amendment??!"

Gryphen, thank you for continuing to post these tragic stories. It seems the media doesn't want to be reminded.

So sad. I wonder if these parents ever change their minds about gun ownership.....

"It wasn’t always that way. California passed its first ban on open carry in the 1960s in response to the Black Panther Party. “The Legislature was debating an open-carry law when 30 Black Panthers showed up at the Statehouse with their guns,” said Adam Winkler, a professor of law at U.C.L.A. and the author of “Gunfight: The Battle Over the Right to Bear Arms in America.”

“The same day Gov. Ronald Reagan made a speech, saying there’s no reason why a law-abiding person should be carrying a gun on the street.”

Maybe the way to turn this debate around would bring new recruits into the gun rights movement. “If open-carry advocates today were Marxist-leaning black radicals,” said Winkler, “we might have a very different situation.”"

"Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I'm not getting a pulse ... I don't think he's alive!" Should be "oh my god oh my god I don't think I got a trigger lock.gun safe"
Sorry to sound so cold and unfeeling, but aren't these words crocodile tears after the fact? She just lost a child because of her own negligence and stupidity.

We need a new word, this isn't an accident in any definition of the word. Guns Kill Guns Kill Guns Kill Guns Kill ad nauseum. Treat them as weapons and keep them away from kids, especially loaded.
I "safeguarded" my house the second my kids began to stand. Got bumpers for sharp edges, cabinet locks, doorknob covers that needed adult strength to open, I got down on the ground and looked around at their level and made SURE I did everything I could to keep them safe. It's not rocket science, it's common sense. Did she remember to put her water bottle back in the freezer? Did she remember her cell phone? Did she remember to cut the ignition and lock the car? She'll get a "slap on the wrist" and maybe a fine, the judge will take pity on her because it was an "accident" and she's suffered enough etc etc etc.
