The Wise County Sheriff's Office says a 9-year-old Wise County boy was accidentally shot and killed by his grandfather Saturday while hunting on the ranch the family runs.
Investigators say it happened around 10 a.m. during a controlled pheasant release at the 9 Bar Ranch just outside Decatur.
Nine-year-old Callen Little, his parents and his grandfather were in a hunting stand.
At some point, Callen left the stand.
The grandfather accidentally shot the boy in the chest as the birds were released.
"He'd left the stand for some reason and then the birds were released and when they shot, they shot into the direction where the boy was, and he was struck in the chest,” said Wise County Sheriff David Walker.
I am trying to figure out how you can lose track of your nine year old grandson with people in the area getting ready to fire off their weapons and I just can't do it. His safety would be a constant matter of concern for me.
Yet another senseless death as the result of the careless handling of firearms.
"Yet another senseless death as the result of the careless handling of firearms." And BAD parenting!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree...you took the words right out of my mouth. These people that have such huge self-righteous attitudes need to focus more on basic life skills.
DeleteAnd a child had to die over this!
A Go fund me page! Right Wing Grifting!
DeleteHow come someone isn't proudly posing with the boy that was killed... I mean, hunting? Pose with dead animals?
Guns are for KILLING nothing else.
Until they are regulated like Cars are ie: deadly weapon and insured or just outright banned this will continue to happen.
Either white thugs on dope or White Grandfathers "hunting" Killing is killing and a gun does not discriminate against a grandson or deer.
Hard to feel sorry for them, and I'm a very compassionate person.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Gryph, knowing the whereabouts of Everyone around you is fundamental good practice, and there should be special attention paid to those whose age contributes to unpredictability. But how the fuck do you not see a kid who's so right in front of you that he's blocking your shot at a bird? I think we haven't heard the full story of gramp's mental state.
ReplyDeleteAt the other end of the nightmare spectrum, there is this story out of Florida where a couple has had both their children taken away for a month and been charged with felony neglect b/c their 11-year-old son played basketball in their own backyard for an hour and a half - all by himself. And I'll add that I don't believe the neighbor's claim of concern for a second. I think the neighbor was pissed b/c that fuckin' kid kept making noise with his damn basketball. (Yes, I do picture John McCain when I think of the neighbor.)
You got it! In a Fucling NUT shell!
DeleteThey'll probably go on a hunt to honor the dead kid. I can hear them already. Sniff, sniff, Callen would want us to go on killing docile penned in animals. That's what he loved to do, so we'll killl many in his memory.
ReplyDeleteAnother tragic failure of the "let any idiot own a gun" culture in America.
ReplyDeleteSorry, Darwin wins again.
ReplyDelete"Gross negligence" and "reckless disregard" should NEVER be described as "an accident."
ReplyDeleteExactly. And no, dear old Granddad hasn't "suffered enough."
DeleteMaybe when these nuts start being charged with manslaughter, they'll wake up!
DeleteAm I the only one who immediately thought of Dick Cheney shooting his pal Whittington?
Deletehttp://gawker.com/5663881/dick-cheney-will-never-apologize-to-that-old-man-he-shot
Whether quail or pheasant, if a bunch of old farts are killing canned birds so that they can kill as many as possible, intelligent creatures ought to refuse the invitation and spend the day at least a county away.
The first rule of shooting is NEVER pull the trigger unless you can see your target. If you shoot another human being, it is not an accident; it is manslaughter at the minimum.
Gramps and Cheney should both have had all gun privileges taken away. Heedless, careless, reckless... they have so little regard for human life, they need to be rendered harmless.
As for how quickly the family put up a go-fund-me page, the police ought to be checking into their finances. Was the kid one-mouth-too-many to feed?
They even have a gofundme page set up without a one single mention of granddaddy having killed him. It has raised over 42K now.
ReplyDeleteOh brother.
DeleteFact: Human beings inevitably make mistakes.
ReplyDeleteFact: Guns are so efficient at their design purpose of killing that mistakes cannot be made.
Fact: The current NRA push is to eliminate all gun safety training requirements.
FACT: Gun deaths are about to increase even further.
Jim in TX yes I'm afraid you are right. This just coming across twitter:
Delete#RW #SPIN #NRA director has blamed the #CharlestonShooting deaths on the pastor http://qz.com/432450 Not #White #DomesticTerrorist #Thugs
***
Until these idiots who own guns own up to their responsibly in the senseless slaughter....it will continue.
You are a very wise fellow, Jim,
DeleteWell, according to conservative talking heads, maybe it was because the 9 year old expressed his gun control legislation thoughts to the group...
ReplyDeleteSurely there were strict rules about minors, and about observers staying behind the lines.
ReplyDeleteThe parents, grandparents, were grossly negligent. Drunk? Stupid?
The outfit that runs this shooting operation is wide open for a negligence lawsuit, despite the fact that the negligence was the result of the boy's family.
What a pointless, senseless tragedy.
Reload, eh, Sarah? You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
And people are sending money to this crazy family, that put its lovely nine-year-old son in the line of fire and then SHOT him?
ReplyDeleteThey should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Is there such a law in Texas -- shooting your grandchild in the chest, no matter where you are or what the circumstances?
Next, they'll be blaming it on the child. Just wait.
Heartbreaking. R.I.P. little man.
ReplyDeleteWhen is this going to end? The one group of people not smart enough, or responsible enough to own guns, have the most..typical, what a shame
ReplyDeleteAnyone else see the irony in the name of the county? How "wise" was it to bring this minor on a hunting expedition? I keep saying it , and I'll keep saying it till I die, these aren't "accidents". And, no, they haven't suffered enough, it's child abuse and negligent homicide at the very least.
ReplyDeleteNothing against responsible gun owners, but one dead child isn't enough, neither was the killing in Connecticut/ What I'd like to know is when will these news items end?
We have technology available to read thumbprints and measure eye movement. Why not add them to the sites to make SURE the aim is correct and the trigger locked until it's confirmed first? My damn roomba has more sense than these gun worshippers.
