It looks like between two or three people have committed suicide in response to the Ashly Madison hack.

Courtesy of the BBC:

Two individuals associated with the leak of Ashley Madison customer details are reported to have taken their lives, according to police in Canada.

The police revealed the news at a press conference in Toronto but gave no further information about the deaths.

Ashley Madison's Canadian parent company Avid Life Media is offering a C$500,000 (£240,000) reward for information about the hackers, they added.

Over 33m account details were stolen.

There is also a report that a Texas police officer has also taken his own life in repose to the hack:

Meanwhile, another report said a US police officer from Texas had also taken his life, days after his name was linked to the website.

Captain Michael Gorhum, who had served for 25 years with the San Antonio Police Department, killed himself last week.

There are also reports that some people with accounts are being blackmailed.

I think it's time to stop gloating over the hypocrites who have been outed by this hack, and start worrying about those who let their fantasies get the best of them.

Great advice! Again, the Ashley Madison cheaters are only sorry that they got caught! If not, it would have been business as usual with these folks.

My husbands cousins husband is on it. Hilarious for many reasons. But sad.

    Monogamy isn't natural.

That said, marriages can survive cheating. All relationships are different

I remember not so long ago when homosexuality wasn't considered "natural", many times by gay people themselves.

Bottom line is you pay your money and take your choices in life. It's that simple.

We weren't made to have 'one' sexual mate throughout our lives. I know women and men (I'm a senior now) throughout my life that screwed around on their mates.

It's the 'christian' teaching that we are not suppose to comment adultery. Another reason I'm an atheist!

If monogamy isn't "natural" or desirable to you, find someone else for whom it isn't "natural" or desirable. Don't make promises to someone who thinks it is possible "and expects you" to be faithful.

Better yet, don't get married at all. Then you can screw around as much as you want without breaking any promises or vows.

      Exactly!
But now the hackers will be tried for murder.
Sarah Palin who put Crosshairs on Dems did not get tried for murder.
And she did it again recently.
Why should the hackers be tried? They warned the Ashley-madision place to take the site down and they didn't.
As far as cheater, I don't care if they killed themselves chickenshits b/c they got caught.
What 5:44 said "Don't make promises to someone who thinks it is possible "and expects you" to be faithful."
Sums it up quite well, no religion needed or wanted.
      Trust and honesty.

Oh please, 2:54 PM, because people got caught? Ashley Madison saw it as money-making venture when there was obviously a market for it. That people gladly pulled out their credit cards wasn't their fault. Not having a totally locked down firewall was.

Maybe the cheaters should have thought of their families before they took assets from the community marital estate to fund their harmless little fantasies. They not only cheated, they stole from their spouses.

And once some GOP politician's name shows up and outs him, Gryphen will be gloating as well. No reason to pretend it wouldn't happen.

2 out of 33 million? What's the normal expected suicide rate?? As of 12/14 it is 12.6 per 100,000 Americans, 120 per million, 120x33= nearly 4000 a year, divided by 365 days in a year? More than 10 a day roughly.
    Nothing to see here maybe.

Sad that some feel suicide is the way out. Also, we
have scums who think blackmail is okay. I'm very

Suicide is often referred to as a selfish act, so I am not surprised that anyone selfish enough to be adulterous would also be selfish enough to choose to end their life, when caught. Better to leave your spouse, parents, children in anger, shock and grief, than to face the consequences of your choices. I will save my pity for those who are affected by the cowards.

Wonder how many women have died from cervical cancer caused by HPV contracted from cheating husbands? How many spouses commit suicide due to a partner's infidelity? I think it's sad, and the hacking was wrong regardless of the purpose of the website. However, any time a person uses a website and submits personal information, it's reasonable to assume there's a risk it could be hacked.

  11. Some of the oldest advice I remember from my mother is 'don't put it in writing' and 'sleep on an angry letter overnight and see if you want to still send it in the morning.' On the occasions when I chose to follow that advice, it never cost me regret.

The internet is an open telephone line with the entire world. Every opinion, every personal confession lives forever and we own them even if we subsequently change those opinions or wish we hadn't been so candid.

I suppose, sooner or later, things would escalate to people carelessly making their yen to cheat on a spouse the business of an indifferent website. Your privacy has always been something like your working senses or your functioning limbs: you really don't know what you've got till it's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous3:24 PM

Do the crime, do the time. Or check out early and leave a grieving family. The only ones who deserve our pity are those who were hurt in any way by the cheating scumbags.

They saved wasting SarahPAC money by getting the discount.

Cheating the spouse is a game many of tens of thousands of years old. Using the Internet to cheat is like using an assault rife when you only need a squirt gun. Using that stupid Ashley Madison web site is just sheer laziness.

The suicide rate for exposed cheaters is probably a lot higher than Ashley Madison is getting. We just don't get stats on all the fine citizens that quietly off themselves because they are too spineless to face the music for diddling one of the neighbors on the side.

I really am trying to muster sympathy - and I have that for the unsuspecting spouses and children old enough to know what's gone on and be teased about it by classmates; however when you play with fire, expect to get burned. In this day and age, nothing remains secret. Nothing.

It's horrible that these people chose to end their lives over this. Suicide isn't the answer for anything.

But when you have an affair, you risk getting caught. There is nothing stopping your mistress from telling your wife, or blackmailing you by threatening to tell your wife.

When I was about 20 years old, I was in a serious relationship with someone and discovered he cheated on me. Know how I found out? When I realized I had crabs and knew I hadn't slept anyone else in months. Kicked his ass to the curb.

There's only one 100% guaranteed way to be sure your spouse doesn't discover you're having an affair...Don't have an affair

The sad thing is people can and do work through infidelity and can end up having a stronger relationship. It takes a lot of patience, counseling and communication, but it can be done.
The problem with Ashley Madison and the people who use it, don't realize that the internet is forever, whatever you publish can be retrieved and used against you. I realize suicide is a serious issue, but one doesn't need the internet to cheat on one's spouse, it's just easier.
Sometimes I think it has less to do with the sexual aspect and everything to do with breaking a taboo and thinking one will get away with it. Danger makes it more exciting, but isn't it easier to 'fess up" than live a lie?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lots of easy advice given here, none of which considers the myriad of reasons why people cheat. As with most things, infidelity is not a black and white issue. No doubt many of the cheaters are just worthless, others I suspect have more complicated reasons.

Being hacked and exposed are not just desserts. Everyone, even cheaters, are entitled to an expectation of privacy. I fault the company, not the clients. This is no different than having other personal information and memberships exposed. No different say than a happily married couple who order toys for their intimate pleasures only to have that information hijacked and exposed.
